How about Cdn actor Bruce Greenwood. He did many guest spots on TV shows in the early 80s, but perhaps gained major recognition playing a doctor in the final two seasons of St. Elsewhere (1986-1988)
He's not like a MAJOR star today, but like Elsewhere co-star David Morse, he's one of those many actors who you see in dozens of well-known movies, but you never really know his name (unless of course you watched St. Elsewhere)

Unless you count his playing JFK in Thirteen Days! He & Costner both deserved Oscar nods for that.
