Subject: What are the years in Gen Y?

Written By: aerognrjovihalen on 06/12/05 at 12:03 am

I say it's 1979 to 1994, but some have it going as late as 1999/2000.  Come on, a 26 year old part of the same genearation as a kindergartener?  That's not right.

Or is Generation Y like the Baby Boomer generation in that it will split in half, early and late.  If so, I think it should split 1979-1988 and 1989-1999, right?

Any thoughts would be great.

Gen Y is split into an early half and a later half. Actually, anyone born in 1978 on is far too young to be considered Gen X since they weren't teenagers in the late 80s and early 90s.

I would have to disagree. I would say 1980-1993, I was born in 1982 Im 23 years old and I have NOTHING in common with a 6 year old 1st grader. Gen Z I starts around 1994- and will last till around 2012 or so.

Yeah but people born in 1978, 1979 and 1980 act and relate to more things like us (Gen Xer born in the mid 70s) then some typical born in 1986 Gen Y kid does.  And these Gen Y kids aren't a full generation away from us, we're sure as hell not old enough to be these kids parents.  They feel more like our younger siblings or cousins.  Ofcourse it would be a different story when you get to the bulk of the babies born in the 90s, with most of those kids we (typical Gen Xer) would be like parental figures, but even then we'd be young parental figures to them.

An 1980-83ish Y'er would get along alot better with Late X'ers then most of there own Gen (Y). I know this is the case fore sure.

Gen Y, I think it starts somewhere in the late 70s to early 80s. I know that for a fact.

I was born in 1977, so I'm a late Gen Xer since I turned 13 in 1990.   I think anyone who was born in 1977 is the last Gen Xer, in my opinion.  People who are born in 1978-1983 are considered XY cuspers who are between X and Y.

I would say it is the people born roughly 1980 to 1996. Even Wikipedia doesn't have official years, it is more based on different theories.

I notice that the kids in the Class of 2011 act different than 2008.

I thought the 90s were part of gen x. and gen y started in lke 1997 or 8 and is still going and if you were in 6th grade then you were part of gen y like me because i was born in 1988 if any one can do the math then that answer is my answer but i think i got it right

In a rough way I'd say Gen X are those who came of age in the 80's and 90's and Millennials (Gen Y is way too vague in definition) are those coming of age this decade and the next.  Socially 1982 is used by some because it was the HS class of 2000 which was totally treated differentlly than those graduating earlier, and this was also the time of minivans and Baby on Board signs. In essence..

Gen X- Children of "Hippy" Boomers who came of age in the 80's and 90's
Milllennial- Children of "Yuppie" Boomers who came of age in the 00's and 10's.

My first son was born in 1998, so I'm an actual parent, not a parental figure, lol.

1964-1976 Gen X

1980-1990 Gen Y

1990-2000 Gen Z

Actually I was off, Gen Y is more like 1976-2001 and Gen Z is basically today's preteens born after 2000 or 9/11.
