Share your experiences, your problems, ask questions, share recipes, etc. I figure that maybe if we have this going on, we can encourage each other, vent if we get discouraged, or ask questions that someone may have answers to.
Go! :)

Great idea for a thread Jess!
Does anyone find drinking lots of water to help them maybe not be as hungry as they would if they didn't drink water as much?
Does anyone believe the commercial that says if you drink more milk that it helps you become trimmer?

I do drink TONS of water...and it does curb my appetite a bit (although I've never been a big eater). I am a fan of flavored water (Propel, or bottled water using Crystal Light packets)....it helps get your water consumption in if it has flavor to it.

I need to start losing weight. A few months ago, I was going out at 6am for jogs every morning until I caught a cold. I never got back in that routine, and have thought about joining a gym until I realized that I'd be paying big $$ to do something I can do for free: RUN
Water supposedly helps flush out the fat, so I drink lots of it each day.

running/jogging is great for weight loss. Several years ago I started jogging and got up to about 3.5 miles per day..I lost a ton of weight. I would like to get back to that sometime soon. :)

Hurrah for the lost art of weight loss. I'm only a pound off my target weight!

I've pretty much had three times in my adult/almost adult life where I've made a conscious effort to work out and lose weight (first when I went to a gym in 1998/99, a couple years later when I became a vegetarian and did lots of running) and this is #3.
I'm around 189 pounds and ideally I'd love to be 170ish. I've just started jogging again and already have doubled the distance (I'm up to about 8/10 of a mile). It does get annoying trying to do it in a townhouse complex 'cause there's no privacy, so I usually yr to do it at twilight either way (morning is more peaceful). ;)
It's kinda hard to give up junk foods lmao, so I'm still working on doing less of that, but I usually have those instant soups as opposed to stuff like chips and crackers, or TV dinners. Bottled water is great too (I got into that when I was 12, 'cause I'd had so much soda as a kid before that). ;D
Different things work for different people, and although you wouldn't think a guy would normally be self conscious about their looks, I really am. I wanna look like a surfer dude, hehe.
On a serious note though, hats off to anyone who has lost weight and/or is working on it. I know what it feels like.

Excellent thread Jessica! You'll get them next month for sure!!! Plus your sweats are baggy!!! O0
Patty, like Erin I drink a ton of water. I am up to about 3 quarts to a gallon a day.
Honestly, it does nothing to curb my appetite but I find that by keeping the water nearby the act of reaching for it is much easier than getting up and getting a snack... see think 'snack' reach for water...of course you gotta make a conscious effort to keep the snacks hidden so it's a hassle to get to them ;D. I have taken to single serve baggies of baby carrots... I love baby carrots tho. and Trader Joe's sells indiviual packages of almonds.
Erin- good luck getting your run on. I look forward to the day when I can run further than two houses ;D
Jason good luck getting your run on too.
Bobo EXCELLENT!!! I'm about 100 pounds from my goal weight but I'm taking it one pound at a time and look forward to when I can say I am one pound away too....
Jesse... when you get your surfer dude on are you gonna frost your tips? ;)
I have to admit going back to take two classes this summer has helped a lot. I am away from home (sadly away from the tv) and I make a conscious effort to walk as much as I can between classes so I should hit four miles a day this week! (mon-Thur.) I have yet to find the motivation to move my tush Fri - Sun but I will get there.

Almost a year and a half at Pathmark,I've lost about a couple of pounds pushing carts and all my life I've never came close to 200 pounds which is good for me but bad for my Father who is very overweight.

A brilliant thread, Jessica. 8)
I have been a little frustrated because I have been relying on my friend to get me to the gym (I shouldn't really but the last thing I want to do after a gym work-out is walk another half hour to get home).
I have also been frustrated with myself as I have been eating like an idiot over the past few days. I need deprogramming, lol.
Good luck with everyone who is trying to get in better shape. 8)

Unfortunately not at the moment, Howard. I had some doughnuts and pasties yesterday. :-[
However, the trick is not to give up when I have had a bad few days. :)

Probably not, hehe. I actually used to do that a few years ago just for something different, and it didn't go too well with me. In fact one time I left it on too long and looked all white, like Billy Idol or Doc Brown (the real one), lol.
That's a very 1999 looking style too (like something the Backstreet Boys would've had), so if I did that right now, chances are it would get laughed at even more.

As everyone knows, I quit smoking almost 11 months ago. I know that weight gain was part of it but DAMN!!!! I was expecting a few lbs-maybe 10. That didn't bother me because I was probably underweight when I stopped. But 30??!!!! :o :o :o
I wasn't going to worry about the weight gain because I knew it normal. I was told that it is a "fast on, fast off". Ok, I have seen the fast on, now I need to get to the fast off part. I would like to know how long it takes for my metabolism to go back to normal. I think I eat healthy-not eating a lot of junk (even though I would LOVE to eat a lot of junk).
As for exercise, I really, really HATE to exercise. There was a time in my life where I did run-and hated every minute of it. I even belonged to a health club-hated that, too. I have tried those exercise tapes, but only lasted a few times. I should dance-I mean really dance on a regular basis. I would also love to get a stationary bike and put it in front of t.v. but there are a few reasons why I don't. 1) I don't think Carlos will want one in the living room, 2) we don't have room in the living room for one 3) if I get one, will it collect dust from lack of use?

Hey, Cat, thanks again! ;)
I quit smoking about 5 weeks ago and I've been exercising to at least counter the inevitable weight gain that goes along with that. My apartment complex has a fitness center with various exercise machines and I've been kind of experimenting with them. I've also getting my mountain bike out a few times a week and riding it for a few miles. I love riding bike and want to get my legs strong again.
Last week I went out running for the first time since I was in the Army, which was over 15 years ago. While it felt good that I actually made myself do it, afterward I found that my back was really sore. However, the fitness center here has an elliptical trainer and I've started using that instead. A lot of my co-workers that are into fitness (including one who's an ex NFL-lineman) have been happy to give me advice, and nearly all of them have told me that running is really hard on your joints, whereas you can get just as good of a workout (some say even better) on an elliptical trainer with zero impact on your joints.
Have you ever tried an elliptical trainer, Cat? I'm almost certain your local gym would have at least one. I'd say give it a try, you might really like it and even think about buying one for yourself. (The only downside is that they can be quite expensive.)

I have been working on what I eat. Cutting out bread, which I actually hate, means no butter, which I love and eat far too much of has made a difference to my waistline already!
I need to eat less really and get some exercise. I have bought myself a skipping rope..............

I have been forced to start cardiac rehab again. I do the nu step. I started out with ten minutes and have worked myself up to 35.
My weight shot up 8 lbs in one week. I was poked and prodded and generally tested for eveything, but to no avail. I have since lost again about 12 lbs in the course of a month. They started me on Lasix and potassium. Plus a new med for my diabetes.
So Since June 3 I have quit smoking, gained and now lost weight. Been in the hospital twice for my heart or at least that is what they thought.
Turns out my chest pain was stress related, but with my (cardiac history 3x bypass pacemaker), no one takes any chances.
My rehab nurse said I could very likely be salt sensitive. I don't use salt, but have taken to checking sodium and high fructose corn syrup contents on the things I buy. Hopefully this is helping. And increasing my veggie consumption, to something other than corn.
Before I had all these health issues 18 mos ago, I thought I maintained a sensible diet not a lot of sugar or fat.
Turns out my cardiac issues are genetic abnormally small arteries around my heart and of course years of smoking didn't help.
Swim if you have access to a pool. Its great exercise and low impact on the joints and so forth.
There are some really good sugar free fat free ice creams out there. One is Breyers and the other is Blue Bell.
But be careful with sugar free candy to much can lead to lots of time in the bathroom.

I just drink lots of water to stay hydrated. It also keeps me from drinking the pop if we have it in the house. I'm not sure about the milk claims, although it is good to drink skim milk for the benefit of your bones.

Its a machine that you sit at and work your arms and legs. It has pedals that are like a stair master and arms that you work back and forth.
You can set the difficulty from 1 to 10. If you have a book or T.V. to watch the time flies by.

yeah I just didn't want you to think I was making light of it.
When I first started Rehab I could barely walk it was so bad so that NuStep and I became close friends.
Now that I can walk I have days where I wish I could just sit and work out because walking takes way too much effort.
I was telling Cat the ellipticals are great but the one I have still kicks my arse... its a cheapo and that may have something to do with it.
When I first started I could barely last 2 minutes but I worked my way up to getting through one song Yeah -Usher O0
Now I can do 10 minutes but only feel good for the first 7.

Jess......
I still need to reply to a message you sent me 8)
When we moved I became so stressed out that I lost a bunch of weight, I was under by about 12lbs. So in an effort to put some meat back on my bones, I started eating healthier, carb foods with so-called antioxidants. Broccoli, carrots, long grain brown rice etc. and doing it in moderation. I tried to do it right, hoping they wouldn't turn to starches and fatty sugars. Unfortunately, I ate a little too much and now find myself unhappy with my midrift.
Enter my Wii Fit.
I bought it when it first came out and used it for the first week. We moved, it was packed, any other excuse I can use would work great right here. Anyway, I took it out of the box tonight and fired it up. Good Lord am I in pain right now!!! ;D
I worked out for 30 minutes, my abs hurt, my back hurts, my thighs hurt, my arms hurt, my hips hurt - aw hell.... EVERYTHING HURTS!!! But I can tell that this, combined with my other exercises, is going to help me.
I eat 5 meals a day, smaller portions so that my tummy is always digesting and my metabolism stays up. Breakfast is the key for me. If I eat breakfast, it starts me out on a dietary track that allows me to eat the 5 meals, because my tummy is always talking to me. Smaller portions: breakfast is oatmeal and toast, snack one is something like yogurt or cheese strings, lunch, a single sandwich with/without condiments (I love my miracle whip light and mustard though), snack 2 is a small bag of 94% fat free microwave popcorn, barely a personal size, then dinner which has meat, veggies and either a little bit of rice or potatoes. If I find I am hungry later on in the evening then I will have more popcorn or falter and eat some potato chips. Not good really but moderation is the key.
Of course, y'all know that I have The Son and Big Nasty to feed as well, so I don't always follow this every single day as I should. It's hard when I know what I am making for dinner to not eat a lot of it. And when it tastes soooooooooooooooooooooo good - it just isn't fair!
We recently all got new mountain bikes, so The Son and I are going to try and get out every day on them, even if it only means in the neighborhood. As well, I am going to try and start walking every day. I can't promise this will happen, especially when the snow flies because I have forgotten how cold it just might get up here!
To those who are battling with their exercising and diets, my heart goes out to you and I will keep you in my prayers. There is nothing harder I find then trying to lose or maintain weight. I do truly understand. Remember: I am a Pepsi-holic.... it is hard for me to just put down the Pepsi and say no.

Walk. Just walk. Get yourself a good pair of shoes and walk a lot. If you get too bored, invest in an MP3 player and load up on music. That is one of my main forms of exercise. You won't see results right away, but your body will feel that you're making the effort. :)
This is great advice as a way to start. I had a friend visit from America for 3 weeks and we travelled around the U.K and even went over to Paris for a few days. In Europe we walk a lot more than you do in America and so she had no choice but to walk everywhere. To be blunt she was very, very overweight but after just 3 weeks she was noticably thinner. Even if it's just a case of leaving the car at home to go the shops, or parking a small distance away from where you work and walking the rest of the way anything helps.

I have a route set up to walk home after I drop the short one off at the bus stop. It is about a half mile, but I figure it is a good start. I have an elliptical, but I can only do a couple of minutes at a time that sucker is hell on my knees. I figure I can work up to more time. It is a great workout, that's for sure.

Yesterday, I was thinking of something that I can do that would be low impact and also the fact that I am lazy. I came up with the perfect solution:
http://www.pycfitness.com/admin/uploadpic/20075159304639003.jpg
I figured I could use this as I am sitting here typing away or watching t.v. etc. etc. I could get one for under $20 so if I get too lazy again, I won't have this expensive thing collecting dust (just an inexpensive thing collecting dust :D ;D ;D ).
I showed it to Carlos. He didn't seem too enthused. He said, "Don't you have exercise equipment that you don't use?" Um..no. So, his reaction has discouraged me from getting it.
However, last night, I was pounding my stomach saying that I was fat. He asked, "Compared to what?" I said, "Last year." He couldn't argue with that. Of course he was comparing me to ex-wife who we just saw the other day.

On nice sunny days I walk to my bus stop and I time myself,25-30 minutes and 15-20 minutes the next so all together, about 45-50 minutes and I burn off a lot of calories.

For those with a sweet tooth....
LOWFAT, LOW CALORIE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
Makes between 3-4 dozen, depending on how big of a spoonful you drop. I usually get about 3 dozen. I've figured out fat grams for it, but not calories. If you actually get four dozen out of them, it is about 2.1 grams of fat per cookie. Three dozen will be about 2.8 grams of fat. This is ONLY if you use Brummel and Brown yogurt spread. It tastes like butter, but it has less vegetable oil than margarine and only 5 grams of fat per tablespoon, so your fat grams will vary if you use a different margarine/butter/spread.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine
2 teaspoons vanilla (and a few drops over)
2 egg whites
2 cups white flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup chocolate chips (I use Tollhouse, obviously :D)
Cream butter and sugars until blended. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Sift flour together with baking soda and salt, then add to butter/sugar/vanilla mixture. Mix well. Add chocolate chips and stir. Drop by teaspoonfuls (this will probably get you four dozen) or tablespoons (this will get you about three dozen) on to ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 10-15 minutes (this is an estimate because ovens vary).
Enjoy, and don't do like I do and eat them all at once. ;D

I've lost 34 lbs since January. I stopped the stress eating and raised my metabolism. I walk almost everywhere. I think my biggest thing now is the slight panic attacks whenever I'm eating over at a friends house or whenever I really have no control over what I eat without seeming impolite.

Breakfast or Lunch? ???
it was an early dinner.... and I managed not to eat anything else.... I don't think I did too much damage I had a small breakfast and small lunch both meals combined totaled just under 500 calories. I had a hamburger and large fries so I was still within 2000 cals (maybe just slightly over it was actually a double cheeseburger w/o cheese because I'm allergic to cheese)
edited to add: I just checked the nutrition facts on the McD's website... my meal totaled 950 calories..less actually because I didn't hav the cheese... so no real damage done.... just got on the scale I'm down 1 more pound. (probably would've been two if I hadn't slipped ;D

I wouldn't consider it a slip up. One of the fundamental rules of changing your eating habits is to not deprive yourself if you are craving something or else you'll wind up eating more of it than you should. :) So I wouldn't worry about it. I'm craving chicken nachos (actually, I'm craving cheese), so I'm going to make them for dinner tonight.

I am trying something new-I am eating almost every 2 hours. Had a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast. Now, I'm eating a small thing of yogurt (only 90 calories). I will have my usually microwaveable lunch in about 2 more hours (under 300 calories). 2 hours after that, I will have a granola bar (about 110 calories), then dinner. Probably some fruit after dinner. I started this a few days ago. I don't know if it is possible but when I stepped on the scale this morning, it did say I was down 5 lbs. :o :o :o Could this be the "fast off" I had been waiting for? I'll let you know this goes after trying it for a while.

I know I get alot of grief for that. I call it an allergy because cheese in almost every form (fettuccine alfredo is about as daring as I can get... and the biscuits from red lobster but only one or two.... ) cheese actually makes me vomit. I think it's a visceral reaction from an experience I had as a kid... the smell of it, the sight of it always makes me ill...
I always laugh when I watch survivor because usually people are tempted by the pizza cheeseburgers and beer.... so I figure I'd always win those challenges ;D but if they put spaghetti up there I'm all over it!!!
Because of the way people reacted it was always easier to call it an allergy... don't know what it is so I still call it that... point is I just don't like cheese!

lol... could be!!! and good for you...
I'm no expert but I learned a couple of things...
one 2000 calories per day...
apparently your metabolism gets used to whatever it is you do to your body so if you eat the same time each day about the same amount of calories...your metabolism regulates (or something) and isn't doing the yo yo thing.... with my schedule its hard but I try to eat at the same time each day.... I tend to eat almost the identical meal several days in row... like an instant oatmeal packet, 2 individual packages of baby carrots I got at costco, one individually wrapped serving of Almonds, usually one of three different lunches and then chicken (broiled) veggies (boiled) for dinner (or cereal) if I don't have one my lunches or my dinner I replace that meal with a single serve bowl of cereal... its more expensive but I find if I buy the single servings of things I am less likely to eat everything in front of me... usually when I eat out of the box I eat the equivalent to 5 or 6 bowls of cereal!
and if i don't those individually frozen chicken pieces (they come in a bag) I tend to eat all I defrost which could easily be 6 drumsticks... it's an illness this compulsion I have but now that I know how to trick my mind I am doing much better.
I'm a creature of habit so once I get a taste for something I stick with it until I

It is possible. A lot of different people have recommended the 4-6 meals a day plan because, like snoz said, it keeps your metabolism on an even keel. I usually eat breakfast, lunch, a snack, dinner, and dessert. These past couple of days though I haven't really been hungry. Not sure why. Maybe I'm getting sick because it is weird for me not to eat. :D
And congratulations! Five pounds off is awesome!

Oooh, the lingering memories vomiting. I did that with mushrooms. There was a bug going around at the time, and my dad had made stuffed mushrooms. Nothing was wrong with those, but the fact that we had eaten them the night I developed the puke bug just turned me off of them for about six years. It also happened back in '06, right before we moved out here. Rice and I had eaten pizza, then Jason gave us his bug. I didn't eat pizza for months and still can't eat barbecue chicken pizza to this day. 8-P

Why does everyone have to pour the salt on by the buckets full. I'm one of these strange people that I don't like a lot of salt-in fact when I have too much sodium, I get super thirsty and just can't stop drinking-then I get bloated, etc. etc. I am STILL trying to train Carlos to leave the salt off when he is cooking. ;)

I actually love salt but I never would have guessed that there was that much in the McD's burgers (fries http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q382/saldania_photos/lobert_17/smiley_yummy.gif yes) but I barely notice the salt in the other foods... guess I must have built up a tolerance since Ive been eating it for so long.
I use an online food journal to keep track of my calories and my daily allotment of sodium is like 25 so with the burger and fries I was 40x over my daily allowance....AT ONE MEAL!
Funny the large fry has a sodium count and 350 and it was 680 for my double burger.... so the burger had nearly twice as much sodium as the salty fries! ::)

Consuming one 16oz glass of ice water burns 350 calories. It takes that much to bring your body temp back up.
I always make sure I drink ice water with every meal and alot during the day
We just had education at Cardiac rehab yesterday, and they recommend 60 mins of exercise a day. gradually worked up to of course.
and do warm ups before and cool down afterwards. Seems the Heart doesn't like sudden exertion or stopping suddenly.

Don't forget Cat, when you eat it turns into other things ::) and it could just be that you have to go booboo, or you have gas build up, or water retention like greenjello said. A lot of things are factored into it, so try not to worry too much. You will probably see the loss again later tonight or tomorrow. It sucks, but thats how it works sometimes! ;)

I just did this myself Isabel!!!
Lots of tuna and brocolli, semi-high carb vegetables and high protein meats.
Peanuts of any kind are good as well as long as eaten in moderation.
oOo and long grain brown rice is good in small doses too.
I was down to 126 and looked horrible. My face sunk in a bit and you could count every rib. (Stress from moving and such did this to me) So now I am back up to 135 and I am trying to maintain and tone. I keep on eating 5 smaller portioned meals a day, and work out at minimum 30 mins. 4 times a week.
Let me get back to you on everything I ate, gonna take a bit for me to remember everything! lol

I know eating to gain weight is my fantasy. But by the same token I know it is just as hard to gain weight for some as it is to lose it.
Maybe a high carb trail mix with lots of nuts, and fruit might help.

I know you are, but it still makes me jealous! ;D
Keep up the good work Howard, and definitely keep on exercising!
Hey Tam at least I'm not sitting by my computer all day playing Hearts ad listening to Doo-Wop all day,I'm out and about,at work collecting carts and coming home, shower and relaxing for the day. That's basically what I do.

Don't let it bring you down, it might just be water retention.
Yeah, that's it, water retention.
Don't forget Cat, when you eat it turns into other things ::) and it could just be that you have to go booboo, or you have gas build up, or water retention like greenjello said. A lot of things are factored into it, so try not to worry too much. You will probably see the loss again later tonight or tomorrow. It sucks, but thats how it works sometimes! ;)
Well, yesterday & today I was totally off this "experiment" that I have been trying. So, tomorrow I get back on it. It seemed to be working and then this set back. I will see if works again after I get back on it.

Today I had to do it again and I managed to sprint up to the 4th floor....felt like I was dying for the 5th and 6th floors but running up four flights of stairs rocked!!!

good for you Howard...
as for me I just got back from a walk. My first around the neighborhood since starting classes 8/4/08
Before the classes I could barely make the mile walk. Tonight I did it no prob and was barely out of breathe when I finished....though I felt it in my back because half a mile of the walk is up hill. ;D

I've found that cutting sodas and most sweets out of my diet has really helped me lose weight...
I do need to get back into walking, though...I had started it up again a few weeks ago, but it's been so bloody hot lately that I just haven't been able to get myself to go out... :-\\

That night I did a mile Howard because its a mile around this neighborhood. but most of it's up hill so I like to call it a mile and half ;D
On class days I average somewhere between 2 - 3.5 miles a day. That's 4 days a week for the last 6 weeks. Today is my last day of class.
On Monday I actually walked 5.7 miles. It was a good day for me. I've gotta figure out how to keep it up now that my classes will be over in about 3 hours...holy crap I have a final in 90 minutes! BYE!~

I went to Curves gym on Wednesday and again today. I haven't been all summer so it was tough to get going again.
Next week I will try and go three times (like you are supposed to!) and also do an arms and abs class. I've also booked in for a weigh and measure next Friday. I was last officially weighed in October '07 so it will be interesting to see what my weight is now.

Thinking about joining Curves?
I really like it. I don't know what your local one is like but at mine sometimes I am the only person in there. And the users come in all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. At the one I use there are some very fit ladies but they are not at all judgemental. We just have a laugh together.
