Subject: Video clip: Johnny D performing "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General"
Written By: Johnny_D on 03/19/07 at 8:01 am
On March 17, 2007, Friends Of the Performing Arts in Concord (FOPAC), 51 Walden Street, Concord, Massachusetts, presented a concert performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance". The performance was a collaboration of The Concord Band, The Concord Orchestra, and The Concord Players, to raise funds for stage renovations at FOPAC's 51 Walden Street theater. This video excerpt from the performance begins with the song "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" performed by yours truly, who played Major General Stanley. The video then continues through to the Finale of Act One.

Another great performance by our cordial comrade Johnny D
The role of Major General you play so very skillfully
I'm glad that you have shared this clip so everybody here can see
That you have talents far beyond your awesome gift of parody

Wow...that's some costume, JD! ;) And great job on the accent, you nailed it!
I shudder to think how you sang that all without one single twist of the tongue. Consider me very impressed.

Perfect performance, Johnny D! You so nailed that! Consider me very impressed as well! I'll have to watch the rest of the act later, but I loved the "orphan/often" patter as well.

Thanks, Jack. That song actually DOES work as a rap - I've tried it! I told folks about the parodies on AmiRight - and yes, I've written my own, too.

Thank you, Stu. And as for my voice, well, it's not an operatic "Bel Canto" ... it's definitely more of a "Can Belto" ! ;) ;D

Glad you enjoyed it, Red Ant - thanks!! ;D

There is a lot of talent on that video to demonstrate that G&S can still be fresh and entertining after all these years. And Johnny D, you certainly made it look natural, which means that there was probably a lot of rehearsing. Like Red Ant, I too liked the orphan/often gag.

Bravo, bravo, sir! 8) 8)
It's worth noting that you had your lyric book in hand, but did not need it for this remarkable solo. What a trouper! ;)
