Subject: Words You Constantly Misspell (or is it Mispell?)

What are some words that you misspell, and no matter how hard you try to imbed it into your memory, you still butcher them every time?  ;D

I might get them right, I might get them wrong.  I'm a pretty good speller but I have a hard time nailing these two:

renaisance
(aw crap, I can't remember what the other one was!  I had it a second ago....darn  :-\\)

Well, there's one anyway.  I'll come back with the other when it comes back to me  ::)

I used to spell "t-h-e" as "t-e-h", but now I seem to spell it "h-t-e"  :-[

I always have troubles spelling Ballistic, but it's not really a word I would use often, unless I was talking about that movie with Antonio Banderas ;D

I NEVER get that one right.

I do that too!!!

Most of my errors are due to the fact that I'm a lazy typist.  I always manage to botch up maintenence (is that right?)

I used to do that too - until I took note of it.

Anything with a double 'll' , double 'r' or double 't' - like parallel. I used to spell 'ancient' as 'aincient' alot. I spell 'psychedelic' like 'psychadelic.' 'Rythm.' - is that how you spell it? Lots of others.

It's a crapshoot everytime I use the word whether or not I'll spell it right.  And "renaissance" is French for "rebirth" as "naissance" means "birth".

I don't have this problem, but

Martial vs. Marshall

...is a big pet peeve of mine.

Martial:  Of, or having to do with Mars, specifically, Mars in  his role as th God of War.
Marshal: (verb) To bring a bunch of folks together.  (noun) In most military systems, one of the highest miliary ranks, e.g. Field Marshal, the guy whose job it was to position all his forces on the field of battle.
Marshall:  A general who came up with a pretty cool idea to rebuild Europe after WW2.

To wit:

Marshall Plan:  The Marshall Plan was a plan by which the United States would secure the loyalties of the generally bombed-to-a-frazzle people of Western Europe by providing them with the sort of help it would take to rebuild their society.

Martial Law:  Law under warfare.  Traditionally implies things like the suspension of the rule of law and its replacement by the absolute authority (whim :) of the police and/or military.  If wearing a uniform means you're immune from prosecution, congratulations -- you're on the winning side of martial law.  Go on, blow away that schmck who's annoying you!  (And if not wearing a uniform means you can be shot by a uniform-wearer for no reason -- it sucks to be you, because you're on the losing side of martial law.  Get a uniform or leave the country :)

Marshal Law:  And if you ever write the words "Marshal law" when you mean "Martial Law", I'm going to scream "NO!  WRONG!  TOTALLY WRONG!  Where'd you learn this?  Stop doing it!".

Speaking of which, another denizen of the Foo Bar Peeve Ranch... the misuse of the apostrophe.

http://angryflower.com/bobsqu.gif

When I'm elected emperor, I shall  invoke martial law, and people who say "marshall law" or "marshal law" when they mean "martial law" will be shot.  People who abuse the apostrophe will merely be abused.

Aw...good one.  I think it's "occasionally" but I'm laughing at myself because since you laid them all out in a list there....they all look wrong!

Today I was thinking of one:  bureau.  I think that's right but I often start out with "beaureau" and then have to rework it.

It is spelt "maintenance".

As for the topic title, it is "misspell".

As for words I constantly spell wrong, "surprise" is at the top of the list. I almost always leave the first r out.

Definitely, 'i' before 'e' except after 'c', barring several other words like society.

There is a more complete rule for I before E, yet I cannot remember how it goes. Words like caffeine and eight are exceptions too.
