Subject: What is this board?

Written By: ChuckyG on 11/28/06 at 4:45 pm

This board is for stuff that doesn't belong in a single decade.

We've moved the "Cry of the Penguin" 70s's cinema topics into the 70s board.

yup! it's new!

we can talk about pop culture phenoms and maybe historical events etc. that span more than a single decade, or can't be compressed into a single decade.

and so it doesn't vault in massive popularity, and suck up posts from the decades boards or otherwise accidently conquer the universe, i have to be pretty picky about acceptable subjects.

so. some examples. james bond movies: acceptable. moonraker: unacceptable. (much as it pains me.)

the grateful dead: acceptable. sugar magnolia: probably unacceptable.

the cold war: acceptable. the cuban missile crisis: unacceptable.

obviously once somebody starts a cold war thread it would be okay to talk about the cuban missile crisis IN that thread though. basiclaly the rule of thumb is, if you want to post a new topic on a pop cult matter and you find yourself stumped what decades board to post it on, then it probably belongs here.

oh, and also, you're not allowed to disagree with me, ever.

indeed so. slayer would count, though i'll always think of them as an 80s band.

I think this thread should be titled:

More Than A Decade (sung to the tune of More Than A Feeling)

rice cube actually did 99% just that.

Looks like the board got that title. ;)

I bet it might work great as a parody too.

International Weed Day, dude.  I don't smoke it and even I know that.

Thanks. Neither do I, btw.

I'm gonna have to look that up on Wikepedia...no one ever told me about it.

I span 70s, 80s, 90s - The 2000s aren't finished yet. So you can't span something non-existent.

International Weed Day.
i'm doing a job for the DEA right now. you don't have to be cheech marin to appreciate the irony.

i was actually born in 1969 so i span lots of decades. pretty much all of them in fact.

incidentally, if there's a topic you want to start and there's a decades thread that just jumps out at you as well-suited for that topic, it's better off posted in that decades thread rather than here, even if technically the topic might span slightly more than that particular decade. beatles, for instance, would definitely go in before the 70s, even if technically they broke up in 1970. wings would definitely go in 70s, even if they didn't break up until the early 80s. go with your first association -- if you associate a topic with a decade, then that's probably where it ought to go. it's a gut feeling thing.

so.

more examples of good topics for this board:

movie franchises and movies with lots of sequels over a long time like king kong, dracula, superman, james bond

certain genres: heavy metal music, horror movies, best t.v. sitcom/hour-long drama/soap opera/quiz show of all time poll, musicals

actors/soloists/directors/other personalities with long careers, like henry fonda, peter jackson, ellen burstyn, jimmy carter, kate bush

bands of unusual longevity -- aerosmith, grateful dead (although here someone could argue the dead is so sixties it might not qualify, i dunno, sorta depends on where it goes), yes, who had a very definite 70s incarnation and then a very definite 80s comeback, in which they were very different but still noteworthy.

I span 70s, 80s, 90s - The 2000s aren't finished yet. So you can't span something non-existent.

But I've spanned the majority of it. We're already in the second half of them.

Spanning something means going from start to finish, like spanning a bridge.  You can't span a decade until it's over.

Okay, maybe spanning is not the right word to describe it. I just couldn't think up a better word, that's all. :-\\ :-\\
