Subject: 20th Century Dinner Party

Written By: Tia on 12/01/06 at 12:04 am

okay, not sure how this is going to go, but we'll see.

the idea is that you pick the six prominent figures of the last century with whom you would most like to have a thought-provoking, seven course dinner with in-depth searching conversation and heated debate. you can either vote for up to six people. if you want a more intimate evening, even one on one, that's totally cool -- AND/OR! you can suggest additional names and i will totally add them to the list and we'll see who votes for them.

i came up with a few names more or less at random to get things started. they suck. i need your help! think of interesting people for me to add.

and yes, you're perfectly welcome, davey thrashmister. and yes, it was my pleasure, beth.

and yes, it was also my pleasure, other beth.

I chose Churchill, Lennon/McCartney, The New York Yankees (well duh!) and Beck.  A nice well-rounded table, methinks.

I'd have a HUGE dinner party (as long as *I* didn't have to cook)

I chose Ghandi (although, it'd be iffy to get a seven course meal made for him, I *think* he was a vegetarian, although I may be wrong about that.)  Lennon/McCartney, cause well..I adore their music; Winston Churchill, Michelle Pfeiffer and Pee Wee.  It should be an interesting evening.  Probably some heated discussions amongst my guests.  :D

Thanks darling, you know Adolf is a great guest.

Ok, my dinner table.. of 6.. just 6, wow.

Ok.

Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan.. 3 of your guys who I'd seriously want there.

Then, Josef Mengele, Al Capone and Dave Mustaine. (Is Dave prominent enough?)

My table's small.  I chose Gandhi so I can make him eat some steak.  Then I chose Hitchcock because his movies were cool.  And finally, Reagan just because.

I'd love to meet Mengele. He performed the best experiments and then evaded the Nazi hunters. He's still alive, just faked his own death in the 70's.

But with any luck he'd sew you to another Liberal.

Went with the usual suspects:  Churchill and Hitler, to see if Gandhi could prevent them from throwing dinner rolls at each other.  Oswald to see who really done it.  Reagan just 'cuz.  Mengele for comedy value.  If I could disinvite him in exchange for Stalin, I'd do so in a heartbeat.  Stalin would be a much better conversationalist.

Applause to the guy who suggested Goering and Rommel as two Nazis, but with a catch.

Goering's not a terribly nice guy (boy, do I have a gift for understatement), I'd swap Goebbels for Goering, because most of those whom Goering led were, by and large, apoltitical.  Goebbels would be my preferred Nazi guest, becuase he (arguably more than Goering) understood the relationship betwee the human mind and mass media about a generation for anyone else did.

I'm with you on Rommel (whom I'd consider more of a German soldier than a National Socialist) so he could see his tactics vindicated in the 50-odd years since his demise -- and so he could raise a stein in mockery of how those who studied him so hard, for so long, failed to finish the job.  In passing, I'd also invite Doenitz, if for no other reason than that most of the submariners were apolitical.  May as well have some balance.

And as long as I'm dreaming about a table crowded with WW2 folks, bring on "Bomber" Harris, Patton (both self-explanatory), and Col. Tibbets (someone had to do it), and from the engineering sides of both sides, Oppenheimer, Teller, von Braun, Heisenberg, and Bohr.

And for true balance, someone's gotta side with Gandhi, and that'd be Einstein.

But that's way more than 6.

So if I'm down to 6... hmm... OK.  Churchill ("yay us!"), Stalin ("yay totalitarianism!"), Hitler ("yay kill everyone not like us!") for competing political systems, and Gandhi ("yay peace!"), Rommel ("someone's gotta do the soldiering if Gandhi doesn't get it right"), Pol Pot ("on a percentage of population, I beat everyone in history, and I make Kim Jong-Il look sane by comparison") for competing world views.

And I'd make sure my brewers brought everyone enough beer to keep them honest, and that my chefs baked plenty of bread rolls, to let them blow off steam as need be.

I chose Lennon/McCartney, Al Capone, Albert Einstein, Salman Rushdie, Vladimir Lenin and Emelda Marcos. I think that would be a pretty interesting dinner: two british Hippie rock stars, an Italian-American gangster, a German-American scientist, a British-Indian author critical of organized religion, a Russian revolutionary and founder of the Soviet state and the vapid wife of an Asian dictator. ;D

Lennon/McCartney should be separated.  I can understand the Lennon and would welcome him at the table of poilitcal/economic discussion.
What is with the Mengele thing?  He was a psycho of the and his ability to evade international law isn't quite as heroic as some may think.  South America opened its arms to fleeing nasties and harbored them many times in plain sight.

There are too many others(well one would be too many) like him out there to warrant calling any of them back for a chitchat.  If you find the mind of someone the likes of Mengele so interesting take a trip and talk to BTK, alias Dennis Rader, he should send a chill up your spine.  I can't think of any reason to recall Bundy, Gacy, Mengele, and their ilk.  There wouldn't be any insight that they could offer that cannot be found in in the psychos walking around today.

I'd invite Rosa Parks so I could tell her the story about the highway in Missouri.

Did you hear about this?

The Klan sponsored a strip of Highway in southern missouri (a place to avoid unless you own a white hood), anywho, they erected there big signs and such like. The sings kept getting knocked down and the state had to replace them which they weren't too happy about. Anywho, one thing led to another and the state of missouri renamed the highway 'The Rosa Parks Memorial Highway'. The Klan decided not to apply to sponsor it for another year.

Well, your first sentence answers your last sentence.  *rimshot*

Funny part is that if you started poking around in there with electrodes, and he started re-experiencing the tastes/smells of what he was up to 60-odd years ago, he'd probably be as fascinated as anyone, and more than a little bit frustrated that he didn't discover the effect first, because he certainly had... umm... the opportunity, if you get my drift :)
