Subject: The Wilhelm Scream

Written By: Rice_Cube on 12/02/06 at 9:50 pm

In case you don't know what it is.

First used in the 50s, it has been employed in countless movies as a sound editing in joke.  What was your favorite use of the Wilhelm Scream sound effect since?

I clicked this thread because I thought you were talking about the band, A Wilhelm Scream...  :-\\

I just listened to it on wiki and it doesn't sound familiar to me at all.

This is a classic sound in Hollywood Audio FX.  It has been used in over 100 movies, from Disney's Alladdin, to all 6 Star Wars movies (plus the Christmas Special).

George Lucas is a fan of this FX, and fits it into every movie he makes.  Here is a list of movies that the sound has appeared in:

If anyones seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, this is used in the scene where the cult leader(the bald dude who pulls people's hearts out of their chests) falls off the side of the cliff and is eaten by alligators.

Just pop in any Star Wars movie, and go to any part where a character flies off a cliff/whatever.  Or in Harold and Kumar where Harold gets knocked off the cheetah.

When veiwing the lastest Indiana Jones movie this summer, during the car chase scene along the cliff tops I heard the Wilhelm Scream. I mentioned this to my son who has never heard of the cinemagraphic entity.

So!  That's what it's called!  I've heard that scream in a hundred movies...

The Stormtrooper, before he falls into the chasm, sounded like he suffered a bit more.  He says , "OW" first...

There was a Sandra Scream in the business, but no Wilhelm!

^ She was in "Nurse Nancy," the one Pee-Wee Herman was watching when he got...caught.

According to Wikipedia, Sheb Wooley was most likely the voice actor for the Wilhelm scream!
