Subject: Doctor Who- You Can't Escape It!!!

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 12/05/06 at 3:12 am

This show is the longest running sci-fi show in television history.

It aired in 1963, on the evening that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Originally starring William Hartnell as "The Doctor", 'Doctor Who' was intended to be a children's hisotry show.

The first episode, "An Unearthly Child" introduced The Doctor, his granddaughter Susan Foreman, and her teachers at Coal Hill School- Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright.

Hartnell's episodes featured adventures in time, via his Time/Space Machine, the TARDIS, which stands for:
T. ime
A.nd
R.elative
D.imension
I.n
S.pace

It looks like an old Police Call Box, from 1960s London. This is due to the chameleon circuit not working properly.
Some of the early episodes feature adventures in Prehistoric times, with the Aztecs, the Old West, and with Marco Polo. In a game of backgammon, the Doctor almost lost his TARDIS to Kublai Khan!

When Hartnell reached ailing health, his character "regenerated", thus insuring that the Doctor's adventures would continue, and his character remained an evolution in progress.

Over 40 years later, the show is back, and stronger than ever!
Even though there was a lengthy hiatus, the popularity of 'Doctor Who' has never ceased to soar.
Now on his 10th body, in the form of David Tennant, the Doctor has begun to encounter some of his most formidable foes again: Daleks, Cybermen, the Sea Devils, and the Haemovores.

There are even hints that his oldest enemy- The Master- is still lurking about.

So, tell me: What memories of this absolutely amazinig show do you have?

I just got into it when the 9th doctor came on Sci Fi (though I'm mad at Sci Fi right now for canceling SG-1 >:() but still Doctor Who has been great, and I'm thinking of buying the dvds so I can watch the older ones.

Each Doctor has had their own quirks and things we like.

Examples-

William Hartnell- His crusty-yet-kind manner, and his walking stick
Patrick Troughton- His laughing, his recorder playing, and his panic
Jon Pertwee- Dress sense, his yellow 1929 Blue Peter, which he calls "Bessie", and his martial arts
Tom Baker- His 17' scarf, his wide-eyed countenance, and his wild smiles.
Peter Davison- His laid-back charm, his cricket skills, and his relative youth.
Colin Baker- His shocking outfit, his manic temperament, and his awful rendition of "On W/The Motley"
Sylvester McCoy- His misquoted witticisms, his sense of humor, and his penetrating stare.
Paul McGann- His sleight-of-hand, and his motorcycling skills.
Christopher Eccleston- His sudden irony, his dress sense & his "humanity".
David Tennant- The pin-striped suit he wears, and his acknowledgment of when someone gets the best of him.

That being said, I'd make a KILLER Master, or War Chief!

Well I do just remember Patrick Troughton and then Jon Pertwee watched from behind the sofa but I guess Tom Baker was the Dr Who I remember most.

Most people remember the teeth, curls and 17' scarf.

I didn't particularly care for his wooden acting ability, though.
My personal preferences run to Sylvester McCoy, Peter Davison, Christopher Eccleston and Colin Baker.

I used to watch Dr. Who briefly in the 80s when I was home from school.  I remember Leee John of the group Imagination had a recurring role

Was this a male or female?

I know of John Levene (Sgt. Benton), Lalla Ward (Romana II), and the fellow who did the voice of K9.
Or if there's a pic handy? I could tell you if I know of their character.

Male.  He played a character named Mansell

You know what they really need?

A Doctor or other heavy-hitting Time Lord who looks very much like.....me.

I mean, think about it!
Each new Doctor they've had has been different, as far as personality goes, but their physical appearance has been similar.

Why not have a Time Lord who's more challenged?
Each one has had their quirks-
William Hartnell used a cane.
Patrick Troughton had his recorded.
Jon Pertwee was a gadgeteer and mechanic (Bessie, the Whomobile)
Tom Baker- jelly babies.
Peter Davison- his cricket equipment.
Colin Baker was brash-yet-inventive.
Sylvester McCoy- that personality, and his misquotes!!!
Paul McGann- the sleight-of-hand with the pistol. Loved that bit!!!
Christopher Eccleston was smart, and yet slightly cold.
David Tennant...well, what can be said?

I didn't watch Doctor Who after Colin Baker started.  I didn't like him as the doctor.  I tried to watch it again when Sylvester started but it wasn't the same.  I thought Paul McGann was O.K. and the last two have been really good.

Someone needs to call Alan Yentob @ BBC, and tell them to contact me, to replace Tennant!

:\'( I'm not sure I can bear it.  First Billie (my daughter is still grieving) and now the lovely David Tennant...why do they keep messing with a good thing?  What's so great about Hollywood anyway?

Now Tennant is leaving?  They need to find an actor willing to take responsibility for the character - maybe someone who is slightly more mature who was a true fan in his own youth.

Ooooh-oooh! Pick me! Pick me!

I'm a true fan who has matured slightly!
I know every single color in Tom Baker's scarf!

I'm the only one who rmembers the War Chief!
Pick me! Pick me!

I'm afraid Dr. Who does nothing for me...never has...

'You Can't Escape It'?

Certainly can...I never watch it!

It aired in 1963, on the evening that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Even though I don't know much about the show, I do believe that this is incorrect...

Kennedy was assassinated on Friday, 22nd November 1963, while the first 'Who' episode aired the following day...

This well-written essay confirms this...somewhere near the bottom of the page...

Speaking of Kennedy, has anyone here read the David Bishop and James Stevens novel Who Killed Kennedy (The shocking secret linking a Time Lord and a President)?

Well, The good Doctor's travels aren't for everyone...
Especially for those who are:

A. Fans of the show that Bill Shatner has hated for 30 yrs.
B. Fans of Michael Jackson
C. Existentialists, who have nothing to believe in
D. Related to Bill Gates 8)

I understand how you feel. I feel the exact same way about Larry the Cable guy.

I like Colin Baker, also. He wasn't give a fair shake.
Neither was Peter Davison.

Between Tom Baker & Sylvester McCoy, these two quite charming incarnations weren't given much of a chance.
Which is OK, because there were a few villains that could use some more exposure.
We all know the Rani, the Master, and the Daleks & Cybermen.

However, do you know of the War Chief?
Or the Meddling Monk?
Or even Davros?
How about The Black Guardian?

.....See what I mean?

I meant that Peter Davison & Colin Baker weren't given much of a chance.

Between them, each barely lasted a full season.

Understood.

No offense taken- I mentioned Tpom Baker & ylvester McCoy because they were the 2 longest-running incarnations.
When Tom Baker quit, there was such a hue & cry, because the public felt that no one could be any better than Tom. When Peter's turn came, he wasn't given much of a chance, publically.
There were so many postings of "Bring Back Doctor Tom", that both Peter and Colin were basically panned.
Then Sylvester came, and he swept them all away...in fact, he is the record holder for the longest duration.
