1982 - Peter Gabriel's "Security" LP was released.

1988 - Elton John sold some of his costumes and concert memorabilia at an auction in London for $6.2 million.

1998 - Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell proclaimed the week of September 8-13 as "Garth Brooks week."

2000 - Sean "Puffy" Combs plead guilty to reduced assault charges in New York Criminal Court. Combs was sentenced to a one-day anger management class. The charges stemmed from Combs assaulting Interscope Records, executive Steve Stoute.

2006 - Whitney Houston filed for a divorce from Bobby Brown. The couple had married in 1992.

1987 - The Farm Aid concert took place at the University of Nebraska.

1987 - "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" was released by Pink Floyd. It was the first release after Roger Waters departure.

1987 - Taja Seville released her self-titled debut album.

1988 - Erasure's "A Little Respect" was released.

1992 - "The One" was released by Elton John.

1997 - VH1 aired "Storytellers" live for the first time. The show was a 90 minute special featuring Elton John from the House of Blues in New Orleans, LA.

1996 - In Pasadena, California, a judge drops drug possession charges against Scott Weiland, the singer for the Stone Temple Pilots. The judge concluded that Weiland had made significant progress in rehab.

1998 - Steven Adler surrendered to authorities to begin serving a sentence of 150 days for two counts of battery and violation of probation.

1998 - East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride and D.H. Peligro, all former members of the Dead Kennedys, filed suit against Jello Biafra. The claim was that the former lead singer had diverted money owed to the other band members for his own use.

2002 - Christina Aguilera's album "Stripped" was released.

1973 - Soft Machine and Pink Floyd hold a benefit concert for Robert Wyatt who had been paralyzed earlier in the year.

1977 - "The Last Waltz" premiered in New York City.

1978 - Greg Reeves, sues his former band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for $1 million in unpaid back royalties.

Two days later a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing a woman, but acquitted him of the more serious sex and weopons charges.

1996 - Mark Wills and Kelly Mangus were married.

1996 - Tiny Tim died after collapsing after ending a show early because he felt ill.

1998 - Inga Vainshtein, Jewel's former manager, filed suit claiming she was fired after Jewel's mother intentionally caused a rift between them.

1998 - The album "Across the Bridge of Hope" was released in Britain. The money was raised for victims of the bombing in Northern Ireland on August 15, 1998.

1999 - Jomato Records released an early collection of Shania Twain's work and called it "Beginnings (1989-90)." The material predates Twain's earliest Nashville demos.

1991 - The musical "Once on this Island" closed after 469 performances.

1994 - Tupac Shakur was convicted on charges of sexually abusing a woman in a hotel room. He was recovering from gunshot wounds he had suffered the day before.

1995 - An auction of Frank Sinatra's possessions earned him $2,072,000.

1999 - Jay-Z stabbed Lance Rivera at a party at Manhattan's Kit Kat Klub. Jay-Z plead guilty to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to three years probation on September 17, 2001.

1971 - Taj Mahal played for the men on death row at Wilmington State Penitentiary.

1972 - "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon was released.

1973 - The Who and some companions were jailed overnight for $6,000 worth of destruction they imposed on a hotel room after a show.

1973 - Bob Dylan began taking ticket requests by mail. Over 658,000 tickets were sold.

1965 - In Sacramento, CA, Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) was shocked and knocked unconscious during a concert when his guitar made contact with his microphone during a performance of "The Last Time."

1965 - Ray Charles was convicted of possession of heroin and marijuana in Boston, Masachusetts. He was given a five-year suspended sentence and fined $10,000.

1965 - The Beau Brummels guest on The Flintstones" on ABC-TV.

1966 - The first Monkees concert was held, in Honolulu, HI.

1967 - The Supremes were guest on "Tennessee" Ernie Ford's CBS- TV special. 

1968 - Elvis Presley's NBC-TV special "Elvis" was aired.

1969 - John Lennon was asked to play the title role in the stage musical  "Jesus Christ, Superstar." The offer was revoked the next day.

1971 - The Montreaux Casino in Switzerland was destroyed by fire during a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The event was  later immortalized in Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water."

1973 - Ringo Starr released the song "You're Sixteen." It was his second straight number one single.

1976 - The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the U.K." was released.

1976 - Seven gunman fired shots into Bob Marley's home in Kingston, Jamaica where he and the Wailers were rehearsing. No one was seriously hurt.

1979 - At Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum eleven Who fans were trampled to death in the rush to gain admittance for general (unreserved) seats to the band's concert.

1986 - A lawsuit was filed against Judas Priest and CBS Records, alleging that two fans shot themselves after listening to the band's music for six hours.

1990 - Nightline aired Madonna's video for "Justify My Love." The previous week MTV had banned the video.

1991 - Gilby Clarke replaced Izzy Stradlin as rhythm guitarist for Guns 'N' Roses.

1958 - Lloyd Price records the "Bandstand version" (with non-violent lyrics, as requested by Dick Clark) of "Stagger Lee."

1961 - Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" was released.

1976 - Tommy Bolin of Deep Purple died of a drug overdose at the age of 25.

1978 - The composer of "Godspell" sues NBC Television, claiming the "Today Show" theme was plagiarized from hs musical (the court rules in his favor).

1980 - Led Zeppelin officially disbands (except for those inevitable reunions), Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones made the announcement of their decision not to re-form Led Zeppelin in the wake of the death of drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham.

1987 - Madonna filed for divorce from actor Sean Penn. She changed her mind, but would file again in January 1988.

1987 - Metallica released the "Cliff 'Em All" video collection. The bootleg and unprofessional recordings had been shot during 1982-1986 when Cliff Burton was still with the band.

1988 - Roy Orbison gave his final concert in Akron, OH. He died two days later.

1989 - The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling that said that Prince did not steal the song, "U Got The Look" from his half-sister. Lorna Nelson claimed the lyrics were similar to ones she had written.

1990 - Madonna appeared on "Nightline" to defend her "Justify My Love" video. She denied the video's explicit contents were intended to stir up controversy and get her publicity. The video was banned by MTV.

1991 - Paula Abdul was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1991 - Van Halen performed a free concert in Dallas. Sammy Hagar had promised the show because he had lost his voice during a show in Dallas 3 1/2 years earlier.

1995 - Michael Jackson appeared with legendary mime Marcel Marceau at New York news conference promoting a Jackson special airing on HBO.

2001 - Gene Simmons' book "Kiss and Make-Up" was released.

2005 - Tina Turner and Tony Bennett receive Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC.

1968 - The Rolling Stones unveil "Beggar's Banquet" in an uncontroversial white cover designed to resemble a formal invitation.

1968 - Graham Nash quit the Hollies. He announced the formation of Crosby, Stills and Nash three days later.

1993 - Douglas Hopkins, ex-Gin Blossoms lead guitarist committed suicide at his home in Tempe, AZ, at the age of 32. Hopkins was fired the previous year due to a drinking habit.

1997 - Carl Edward Hunter, manager of Ray Charles, was arrested in Japan on suspicion of marijuana possession.

1997 - Toni Braxton filed suit against LaFace Records and its distributor Arista Records, claiming that her 1989 recording contracts were invalid.

2002 - Elton John guests on NBC-TV's "Will And Grace."

2003 - Scotty Moore (Elvis Presley' original guitarist) undergoes brain surgery to repair a subdural hematoma.

2004 - Elton John is among six Kennedy Center honorees performing for President George W. Bush in Washington, DC.

1964 - The movie "Ferry Cross the Mersey" with Gerry & the Pacemakers debuted in London.

1965 - The Beatles release their "Rubber Soul" album and "Day Tripper" single (which, strangely enough, isn't from that album).

1968 - James Taylor's self-titled album was released in Britain.

1968 - Elvis Presley received one of 66,000 letters that U.S. President Nixon sent out to potential administrative office holders.

1969 - Four people died during a free concert given by the Rolling Stones. One of the deaths was a stabbing that occurred near the stage. The event was recorded and released a year later. Hell's Angels members used as security kill a man holding a gun (and three other audience members die, as well) as the Rolling Stoes play their infamous concert in Altamont, California.

1970 - "Gimme Shelter," the documentary film about the Rolling Stones' 1969 tour of the U.S. debuted.
(including clips of the Altamont concert) opens in New York.

1978 - Sid Vicious smashed glass in the face of Patti Smith's brother Todd during an altercation at New York rock club Hurrah. Vicious was out on bail after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen.

1988 - Metallica recorded their first video, "One."

1993 - The Eagles tape a video for country star Travis Tritt's version of "Take It Easy", which leads to the group's reunion.

1995 - Michael Jackson was hospitalized after collapsing in a New York theater while rehearsing for a TV special.

1995 - Joni Mitchell was awarded the Billboard's Century Award.

1997 - Metallica performed "Fuel" and "The Memory Remains" with Marianne Faithfull on NBC's Saturday Night Live.

1999 - It was announced taht Gabriel Gomez had been charged with the kidnapping and murder of Sandra Rosas, wife of Los Lobos singer/guitarist Cesar Rosas. She had disappeared from her home on October 23.

1966 - Rick Nelson and Joanie Sommers appear in "On The Flip Side" on an episode of ABC-TV's "Stage 67."

1968 - Eric Burdon announced he would break-up the Animals after a December 22 concert at Newcastle City Hall. His intention was to go to California and start an acting career.

1984 - Michael Jackson testified in Chicago, IL, that he wrote the song "The Girl is Mine," not an Illinois man. Jackson won the case.Michael 

1986 - Huey Lewis and the News sang the U.S. national anthem a capella before a San Francisco 49ers-New York Jets NFL football game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, CA.

1986 - Ray Charles receives a Kennedy Center Honor from U.S. President Ronald Reagan in Washington, DC.

1987 - Harry Chapin receives a posthumous Congessional Gold Medal for his work in fighting hunger, six years after his death.

1991 - "Achtung Baby" by U2 debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's pop albums chart.

1993 - Guns N' Roses announced they would keep the tune written by Charles Manson "Look At Your Game, Girl" on their album, "The Spaghetti Incident?" The decision to keep the song came when the band learned that the royalties would go to the son of one of Manson's victims.

1996 - Jerry Lewis' white and red pinstriped devil suit was stolen from his dressing room at Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo. Lewis needed the costume, valued at $9,000, to play the role of Satan in the musical Damn Yankees.

1997 - Bob Dylan receives a Kennedy Center honor from President Bill Clinton.

1998 - Arturo Sandoval was granted U.S. citizenship after a six-year struggle with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

1986 - Paul & Linda McCartney's limo caught fire en route to a TV taping in Newcastle, England. They are both unharmed.

1994 - Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and Heather Locklear were married.

1996 - Celine Dion said she was going to take a break from her career and concentrate on starting a family.

2001 - Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) pled guilty to domestic battery case that arose after fighting with his wife at a Hard Rock hotel on November 19. The judge approved a plea bargain in which the case would be dismissed if Weiland had no more problems for the next six months and he completed 26 counseling sessions.

2001 - Madonna appeared on television's "Dateline."

1983 - Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys drowned while swimming near his boat in the harbor at Marina del Ray, CA.

1992 - A son named Adrian is born to Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell of the New Bohemians.

1998 - Usher sued the Tommy Hilfigger company for alleged infringement of publicity rights and false endorsement.

2001 - A district court judge reduced a charge against Marilyn Manson. The original charge, fourth-degree criminal sexual misconduct, was reduced to disorderly conduct. A second charge, a misdemeanor count of assault and battery, remained unchanged. The incident stemmed from a concert on July 30, 2001 in Clarkston, MI, in which Manson allegedly assaulted a security guard.

2002 - Gary Glitter is deported from Cambodia because of his conviction in England for child pornography.

2003 - Michael Jackson is interviewed on CBS-TV's "60 Minutes."

2005 - The body of Barry Cowsill of the Cowsills ("Indian Lake") is discovered in the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

1961 - The Beach Boys played a show under this name for the first time at a Ritchie Valens memorial concert in Long Beach, CA.

1962 - John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas ("Monday Monday") marry.

1969 - Jimi Hendrix introduced his new Band of Gypsys at a show that was recorded and later released as the live album "Band of Gypsys."

1984 - Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in an auto accident in England.

1985 - Ricky Nelson and six others died in an airplane crash near DeKalb, TX. A fire had broken out on the plane.

1986 - At a birthday party for Don Henley, Gary Hart and Donna Rice met each other.

1993 - Barbra Streisand performed her first paid concert in 22 years at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, NV.

1975 - The Allman Brothers Band were named "Outstanding Community Organization" by the Georgia Department of Corrections.

1979 - The trial of ex-Sex Pistol, Sid Vicious for the October 1978 murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen, opened in New York City. Vicious died of a heroin overdose, thereby not living to hear the verdict.

1980 - Larry Williams was found dead in his home in Los Angeles, CA. The gunshot wound to the head was never confirmed as the result of a murder or suicide.

1983 - The musical "Annie" closed on Broadway at the Uris Theatre after 2,377 performances.

1985 - Leonie Rysanek gave his final performance of "Aida".

1987 - Aretha Franklin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with Bill Haley and 14 others. Franklin was the first woman to be inducted.

1996 - Madonna testified in an L.A. Court against Robert Dewey Hoskins. He had been accused of stalking and threatening to kill her.

1998 - Swedish police arrested a total of 314 people following a neo-Nazi concert near Stolkholm. Crowd members allegedly gave Hitler salutes, classified as a "hate crime" under Swedish law, during a performance by U.S. group Max Resist.

I loved the Simpsons version of "The B-Sharps" singing at the top of Moe's tavern.
I think The Beatles last concert was Aug, 1966 in San Fran...amazing they didn't perform live much after that other than that rooftop session you eluded to.

Oddly enough, in 1969 I was in both Amsterdam (visited there)  and Montreal (lived there), but I was not at the bed-ins. Don't think my parents would have allowed me to go anyways.
