Subject: The Official Cover Songs Thread - Your All Time Favourites?

Written By: whistledog on 03/21/07 at 8:42 pm

I know there's been threads like these in the past, but they are all over the place, so I thought i'd start one in here.  There've been many cover songs past and present.  What are some of your all-time favourites?

Cool topic and some nice suggestions so far. I'll try to put together a list later, but I wanted to ask, didn't the Mighty Pope version of "Heaven etc." predate the Nicholas one? I really like their version of that song, but I'd been working under the impression it was the original.

LOL Now I am all confused.  Mighty Pope is Canadian, and I always assumed it was the cover of Paul Nicholas cause in the charts, it tells me that Mighty Pope's version was not written by a Canadian.  Here's the debut chart dates that I found for North America:

In Canada ...
Mighty Pope (August 20, 1977)
Paul Nicholas (November 19, 1977)

In America ...
Mighty Pope (Did Not Chart)
Paul Nicholas (August 20, 1977)

Paul Nicholas went to #6 in the US with it, but stalled at #49 in Canada.  Mighty Pope took it all the way to #14 in Canada

Speaking of The Ramones, I LOVED their cover of "Baby, I Love You" and of all the people that have covered that song, I thought they did the best job! 8)

Judas Priest did justice to "Johnny B. Goode" on their Ram It Down album in the late 80s.  Originally, Chuck Berry...

Santana's "Hold On", from Shango is another of my favorite covers.  I think it's an Ian Thomas cover...

  You already mentioned that one...

Yeah. Maybe it was a true cover battle and they released them at the same time? Mighty Pope doesn't appear to have made any Billboard chart, but the two versions debuted on the Cashbox chart the exact same week (13 August 1977). Interestingly, Nicholas's version was the highest debut that week (at #83), while MP crept in at #100.

Anyway, sorry to sidetrack your thread!

wow! MP reached the Cashbox chart.  It's nice to see his version was able to chart outside of Canada.  Nicholas' version is more dance-pop fueled, while MP's is like a laid back funk groove.

The song was written by two folks named "Bugarth / Musker" whoever they are.  lol

I don't know who did this cover from within the last few years  ???  but it's pretty decent:

"No Matter What" - originally by Badfinger (love the original too)

Can somebody please help me with that one?  :-*

It's My Life - No Doubt

Great song! Cover and original, too.

Everyday by James Taylor (Buddy Holly)

Got this one, but how could I miss his awesome version of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" (Marvin Gaye)

I'm sure I'll think of some more  ::)

As this was/is the only version of the song to ever hit the Dutch charts, I've always thought of it as an original. I didn't realize it was a cover until I joined this board.

Oh, they've done plenty of 'covers', which I'm afraid don't hold a candle to the originals, but that's just me...

From memory they've tackled...

'Working My Way Back To You' (Four Seasons/Spinners)
'Love Me For A Reason' (Osmonds)
'Father And Son' (Cat Stevens)
'Words' (Bee Gees)
'Baby Can I Hold You' (Tracy Chapman)
'When The Going Gets Tough' (Billy Ocean)
'You Needed Me' (Anne Murray)

This cover-fest also spilled over onto fellow Irish pap group Westlife... :P

Father and Son was the one I was thinking of, but I completely forgot they did Words and You Needed Me lol

I thought Westlife did a good job with Uptown Girl, but their other covers (Mandy, I Have A Dream, Seasons in the Sun) were a bit too sappy

In no particular order:

"Cruisin" - Huey Lewis with Gwyneth Paltrow (original by Smokey Robinson; I'd still like to hear his version sometime!)
"Funky Town" - Pseudo Echo (original by Lipps Inc)
"Everybody Plays The Fool" - Aaron Neville (original by The Main Ingredient)

...and some others which I'll probably think of later.

Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and "The Night" are very good covers.. Nirvana's "Man Who Sold The World" is exceptional as well, though they lost the atmosphere the Bowie original created.

Johnny Cash's "I Hung My Head"... beautiful cover. He perfected that song.

Which reminds me.. Hendrix ruined "All Along The Watchtower"... Frank Marino and Mahoghany Rush, on the other hand, did a very good version of it.

This is perhaps the sweetest cover I have ever heard....

The late Eva Cassidy singing Sting's Fields of Gold.....quite emotional....(she passed way too young).. :\'(

The sound is either way out of sync or maybe a different song...but I prefer to see the artist.

One of my most favourite cover songs of recent is 'Uninvited' by Freemasons featuring Bailey Tzuke.  I always hated the Alanis Morissette original; it sounded like nails on a chalkboard.  What the Freemasons did was turned a song I hate into one of my favourite songs of 2007

I was gonna make a thread related to cover songs, but I'll just say it here instead: ;)

I have a little semi-rant because I've noticed people lots of times will give it crap on BOTH sides. Like, you'll see diehard fans of the original will hear a new version and go "Ah this is trash, it's got nothing on the one I grew up with". On the other hand, people who like the cover might hear the first version and go "Oh man this sucks compared to the new one, it's boring" or whatever.

I see this exchange going on alot, which is disappointing 'cause lots of times I personally like both (even if I might prefer an '80s original over, say a 2005 cover). On the flipside, alot of '80s songs which were covers of '50s and '60s songs made me go back and get into the original! So to me both are positive.

To the people who love the originals - I'd say there's nothing wrong with putting a new spin on something. It's not descrating something you're partial to, it's just being presented in a way that fits the current time or a different style. Just look at it as new music with an added retro influence, rather than the other way around. Plus you can usually hear traces of a song in any cover, even if it's just fitting the basic singing formula of the original.

To people who like the covers - I'd say have some respect for where a song you like came from. Lots of times, singers or bands probably cover a song because THEY like it, or grew up with it, so it's like paying tribute. If it weren't for that one, "your version" wouldn't exist.

I have seen some good ones names here, Motley Crue's Smokin' in the Boys Room is classic.

I am probably all alone in this, but I loved White Lion's cover of Radar Love by Golden Earring.

That's over 4 years old ;D  'Tis a great version though :)

One of my most favourite cover songs of recent is 'Uninvited' by Freemasons featuring Bailey Tzuke.  I always hated the Alanis Morissette original; it sounded like nails on a chalkboard.  What the Freemasons did was turned a song I hate into one of my favourite songs of 2007

ya..I should have said, "a cover that is new to me" :D

Hands down IMO the best remake EVER for me is Gary Jules' version of Mad World by Tears For Fears.

I think the best covers are where they add something new to their version, but sometimes just doing an almost identical version updated for whenever it comes out, works really good too. Here's some I really like:

You Can't Hurry Love, and True Colors - Phil Collins
It's My Life - No Doubt (I like this MORE than the '80s original!) ;)
The Boys of Summer - Ataris
But it's Alright - Huey Lewis
You Keep Me Hangin' on - Kim Wilde
California Girls - David Lee Roth
Don't Dream it's Over - Sixpence None the Richer
Somebody's Baby - Phantom Planet
King of Pain - Mudvayne
The Midnight Special - Creedence Clearwater (it was an old blues song)
Loco-motion - Kylie Minogue

In the seemingly never ending series of Umbrella covers, I bring you The Baseballs...

The Baseballs are a German trio that so far have released one album with rockabilly covers. "Umbrella" was their first single, the second was "Hot N Cold".

Indeed it is.  8) Wasn't it used in a commercial fairly recent?

Ah, never mind. I realized it was used in a Dutch commercial, so you wouldn't know.
