For me, probably in the late '80s. '50s stuff was popular in the '80s, so her image was not hard to come across.

There was a really good movie in the 90s called "Calendar Girl", set in the 60s where Jason Priestly and Jerry O'Connell play a bunch of guys who travel to Hollywood to meet Marilyn Monroe

Her acting made me embarrassed for her, especially in "The Millionaire And The Showgirl." She was exceptional playing to a live audience, and as to her beauty, I think that she had a certain completeness that only few have. All the right moves.
The picture of her standing on the street vent with her skirts bellowing, is what comes to mind when her name is mentioned.

I was about 5 or 6 and at madame Tussauds Waxwork Museum in London. They had a waxwork of her from the film Bus Stop and I remember being mesmerised by it and asking my Dad who it was!

70's, I believe they had a whole section on Hollywood icons so it was interesting that they chose that image of her rather than a more famous one like the street vent.

I have a copy of an early 50's movie entitled "As Young As You Feel".  It's a light comedy with that dated early 50's charm.  Marilyn Monroe wasn't the star of the movie - she played a secretary.  She wasn't what I'd call an outstanding actress in that movie, but given her role it wasn't necessary - she was effective.  I understand her presence was used as a selling point for the movie (she was considered a "rising star" at that time).  If you get a chance to see this movie, I'll recommend it.  I haven't had the opportunity to see other movies of hers.  Anyone else?

In the early-mid 80s there was quite a resurgence in Marilyn Monroe and James Dean posters/cards etc.  in the UK.  they showed all the James Dean films and probably all the Monroe films as a series every Saturday.  I don't know if I knew about Monroe before that, it's possible, but i would say that's when i first became aware of her as icon.

The first time I ever saw or heard of Marilyn Monroe was in 1952.  My father who, to the best of my knowledge, never read that type of magazine, brought one home with the nude of Marilyn, stretched out with a red backround.  He showed it to my mother and then he showed it to me.  I was eleven...and I was...impressed.  ::)
