Subject: TV Vanity Cards (Production Logos)

Written By: whistledog on 05/05/07 at 2:54 am

Vanity Cards are better known as Production Logos, seen at the end of TV shows after the credits roll through.  Got any favourites?

Here are a few examples ...

MTM ENTERPRISES
Production company co-founded by Mary Tyler Moore.  Her kitten Mimsie (often seen in a way that relates to the theme of each TV show) appears in a circle above the MTM letters, and meows.

- In Remington Steele, she is seen in a Sherlock Holmes Cap and Pipe
- In Hill Street Blues, she is seen in a Policeman's cap
- In St. Elsewhere, she is seen in a Surgical Mask and scrubs
- In the White Shadow, she is replaced by a calico cat who dribbles a basketball against the two M's

Some exceptions included ...

- An episode of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' in which the she was replaced with Mary herself saying "Th-th-th-that's All Folks!"
- 'Newhart' in which her meow is replaced with Bob Newhart saying "Meow"
- Xuxa' to which Xuxa is heard saying "Ciow"

Some exceptions also included the end of a series ...

- In the final episode of 'Newhart', Bob's meow is replaced with the Darryll's yelling "QUIET!"
- In the final episode of 'St. Elsewhere', as the credits roll through, Mimsie is shown hooked up to a life-support machine, and when the MTM logo appears, she flatlines and dies  :\'(

- Home Video versions of the MTM logo show Mimsie holding a remote.  After she meows, she rewinds back and meows again

JOHN CHARLES WALTERS PRODUCTIONS

Seen at the end of 'Taxi'.  A woman is heard saying "Goodnght, Mr. Walters", and as Mr. Walters walks out the door, he grumbles.  During Christmas themed episodes, the woman says "Merry Christmas, Mr. Walters"

CHUCK LORRE PRODUCTIONS
It flashes for just a few seconds, but it's basically a giant blurb printed in small text that can only be read by pausing the screen.  For each episode of the shows Chuck produces (such as 'Dharma and Greg' and 'Two and A Half Men'), he writes a different one, each one numbered ...

MOHAWK PRODUCTIONS
An Ultrasound of a baby is shown, and the baby laughs

WHERE'S LUNCH?
Philip Rosenthal, co-creator of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' created this vanity card that showcased a different dish of food being shown on a placemat

STEVEN BOCHCO PRODUCTIONS
A vintage photo of Steven's late father is shown, computer enhanced to show him playing a fiddle

UBU PRODUCTIONS
Ubu was the actual dog of Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg.  At the end of each show he created, Ubu is shown with a frisbee in his mouth.  A man says "Sit Ubu, Sit.  Good dog" and then Ubu barks

STARRY NIGHT PRODUCTIONS
Seen at the end of 'Night Court'.  A star flies over a black city scape, a whip cracks, then Harry Anderson laughs as the Warner Brothers shield appears.  In the first few episodes of Season 1, the laugh does not appear

STEPHEN J. CANNELL PRODUCTIONS
Stephen is shown at his typewriter.  He rips out the sheet of paper, and it turns into an animated piece of paper that forms a C

EMBASSY TELEVISION
As seen at the end of shows like '227' and 'Who's the Boss'.  A blue screen forms through a invisible star seen though a letter E

For some reason, the Steven Bochco one used to creep me out, as did Harry's laugh on Starry Night productions.

My favourite is still Mimsie, the MTM Cat.  I remember the final episode of St. Elsewhere when she flatlined.  I tried to find a clip of it, but i came up empty

Too bad the Where's Lunch productions logo from Everybody Loves Raymond preceeded a logo that I hated so much I get petrified everytime I see it.

(Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, Inspector Gadget)

Along with the DiC logo.  It's cool that the DVD of H&tCC included the LBS vanity card.  A detail not overlooked and much appreciated groove ;) on...

I don't get why people are afraid of the Dic's Kid in Bed?

There's a thread around here about the DiC logo...

I still say it's a little girl and she says "deek"... :P

I Loved the Lexington Broadcast Services Company logo (The one from 1976 though). I'm Surprised that was from the 1970's, that sounded so 80's.

Me, too.

I do like that one and the MTM kitty. I especially love the way they "personalize" the kitty for each show.

Especially that it sounds similar to inspector gadget's theme song

Here are three that I like.

MARK VII LIMITED

Jack Webb's production company.  As a drum roll plays, one hand holds a metal stamp while the other hits it twice with a hammer.  The hand moves to reveal the VII and the "Mark" and "Limited".  I remember it most from Adam-12 and Emergency.  Dragnet also used the production logo, but I never watched Dragnet growing up.

TEN THIRTEEN PRODUCTIONS

Chris Carter's production company.  Named after his birth date (October 13)  The name is show in white text on a black background and we hear the sound of a film projector and a young voice proclaiming "I made this!"  Most people would remember this from the X-Files and Millennium.

http://74.53.81.162/~bobborst/mymedia/images/logos/1013x150.jpg

MUTANT ENEMY PRODUCTIONS

Joss Whedon's production company.  A cartoon monster crosses the screen from right to left and says, "Grrr. Argghh.  This was the production company for Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly.

http://74.53.81.162/~bobborst/mymedia/images/logos/mutantenemyx150.jpg

For me, in each of these cases these is a strong association between the show and the production logo.  Anytime I see that little animated monster and hear it say "Grrr Argghh", I think Buffy.

And the winner of the most creepiest synthesizer of any production logo is.... *drumroll please*

*drumroll*

Genesis Entertainment. Period.

I thought the laugher at the end of Night Court was the creator Reinhold Weege?  ???

Friends of Garcia logo at the end of "My Name Is Earl" features a photo of different person each week wearing a fringed sombrero.

Braniff Productions was the former logo for South Park. The little tune accompanying the image of a jet airplane in the clouds is a melody from Trey Parker's infamous "Cannibal! The Musical"

Oprah Winfrey's HARPO Productions has a cute little animated Oprah dragging out her name on a cart and rearranging the letters.  :)

David E. Kelly Productions' has a little old lady acting nuts: "Gotcha you stinker!"

Gracie Productions is at the end of The Simpsons and all James Brooks productions. A quick shot of a theater filled with people viewing a giant screen, and a silhouetted figure says, "Shh!". Piano erupts as the camera veers into the screen.

Viacom was a little eerie, too, IMHO.

That guy that says "Viacom" used to be the announcer on 'The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn'
I am not sure if he announces for Craig Ferguson
