Angel of Death is the perennial Thrash masterpiece. Most typical morons come out with the garbage about "Your glorifying Nazis." to which I usually reply "Watch the History Channel dumbass." It's just a song, talking about Josef Mengele, in no way does it glorify him, but as per usual with Liberal do-gooders and Conservative fear-mongers, there was a public backlash which led to Columbia (Def Jam's parent company) getting very nervous and eventually having Geffen release Reign In Blood.

Angel of Death is without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest single tracks recorded, from one of the greatest albums recorded. The speed is just killer as well as the fantastic lyrics and the way they're spit out by Tom Araya. The song was written by Jeff Hanneman, unusual in so much that Kerry King is the main song writer.

Another awesome Slayer song -

Dittohead!! Condemnation of Liberal Judicial Policy in regard to serious crime and condemnation of right wing Judicial Policy in regard to pathetic crime.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bfDBZX0j_0

..And one more from the masters - Slayer covering Minor Threat's 'Guilty Of Being White', because after all, it's a crime.  ::)

Napalm Death - Greed Killing. Napalm are awesome, if you want to find out more about one of the originators of Grindcore and the most changed (lineup wise) band in all of history pick up 'Choosing Death' by Albert Mudrian.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZoSUokGbOo

Carcass - BLACK STAR!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XRl7EASnwQ

This is a fairly new release from the Fantastic Godless Bastard Love's of my life Deicide -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJkMrl4AG8w It's obscene in it's brutality!

Black Metal is totally different - This is Darkthrone with a somewhat a-tonal rendering - A Blaze In The Northern Sky.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLtwCQNPgWg

This is Tori Amos's favorite Cannibal Corpse song, somebody better call R.A.I.N  ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY6JDLmpuWc&feature=related

.. and finally, just because the video is cool -

Children Of Bodom - Are You Dead Yet?

Anything by Iron Maiden, my personal favorites being 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' and 'Hallowed be thy Name'. 'Ride the Lightning', 'One', 'Frayed Ends of Sanity', and 'Welcome Home' by Metallica (or anything they made in the 80's). Anything off Megadeth's Rust in Peace and Peace Sells, as well as 'This was my Life', 'Symphony of Destruction', 'Train of Consequences', '99 Ways to Die', and 'Youthanasia'. 'Seasons in the Abyss' and 'War Ensemble' are my favorite Slayer songs. Anything by Therion, 'Metropolis' and 'Constant Motiion' by Dream Theater (anything and EVERYTHING related to John Petrucci for that matter). If you consider Alice in Chains to be metal (which I do...to an extent) then 'Would?', 'No Excuses', 'Them Bones', 'We Die Young', and 'Dam that River'. Nightwish is awesome. SO MANY SONGS! I CAN'T LIST A FRACTION OF THEM!

Joan was either cold or excited playing that song.  ;D

I've seen Joan Baez perform and loved that she played this song. I like Joan's version, after all it is the original, but I
thought Priest did a great job covering it. Priest also does an acoustic and electric more traditional version but I like
the version posted the most.

I saw Judas Priest when they opened for Black Sabbath with Ozzy, in '78 I guess, anyway when Priest played Diamonds
And Rust, Halford's Microphone came unplugged and he sung an entire verse that no one could hear.  ;D

and a mystery bonus.
ha, the live version of the immigrant song. i'm going back and listening again.

i've been instructed that, though this song may be said to rock, it cannot be said to be true and proper "metal." i think it sorta counts as ur-metal, one of those formative songs that was a blueprint for the cats who came after. basically, exempting the rather warm warm tone on the marshall stack jimmy's playing through it's got all the elements of metal: the high vocals, lead-foot bass drum, crazed superfast chromatic bass guitar, weird tonality (i think immigrant song is in F# phrygian?), and tweaky norwegian vocals about valhalla and gods and whatnot.

one of my favorite garbage 80s metal bands remade immigrant song. it's not good, exactly, but it's definitely crazed and horrifying. i liked dark angel in this sorta cultish so-bad-it's-good way back in high school. listen to how fast the drums and bass are! (sorry, only studio version on this.) they knew how to play, that's for sure.

Subject: Re: sweetest metal tunes

Written By: Tia on 07/12/08 at 2:50 pm

this was another favorite from the same album. something went weird with the recording, it's sorta "ringy" in the highs. you think that's because of the youtube upload, but no, i had the album on cassette and it actually sounds like that.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=G9qE21f7En4

i find this to be a very slamming instrumental, takes its time to build and goes through a lot of wild tempo changes without getting so absorbed in the changeups that you lose the thread. and it maintains this sense throughout of being played by extremely disturbed and unhappy people. which is metal's stock in trade. too bad their sound engineer wasn't better, this coulda been quite a song.

dig the spooky rise-of-the-undead mood change at that coda in the end! i remember when i listened to the song the first time that mood change into the Heart of Darkness was what made me want to listen again. very cool song in my estimation.

another epic song from that album that i got really into when i was all teenagery and angsty. recording and playing and vocals are all really solid on this one, in my opinion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od_020GcuuU&NR=1

actually, i take it back about the recording. when they hit the big stops a couple of times you can hear the apparatus gets overdriven and the levels dip down for a second and then rise back up. whoever did sound for them on this album sucked big time.

get the halftime changeup at 6:48. sheesh like that was what made me love metal in the first place, when it's going ridiculously fast and sinks down into that mired swampy slow mosh. love it.

actually, believe it or not, yes. i tried out for a conservatory wanting to do segovia transcriptions of bach tunes for nylon string guitar. mostly cello but some organ songs too. but it was too hard so i studied english instead.  :-[ it's not so much that liked the organ stuff particularly but i think bach is probably the best composer of music in any genre of all time and his organ works were the pinnacle of his career.

here's a version of my favorite ever bach tune. not on a "period" instrument either but something with a little balls.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZKTc_xWM4k

this is my song. 8)

oh and p.s. i would say queensryche counts. although i also say dont worry too much about what "counts." it should rock hard on some level.

i still stand by my inclusion of the original live zep rendition of immigrant song. hail satan.

i changed my mind about dark angel, by the way. they're not so bad they're good. they're just plain good.

"The world now stands ancient, showing her age
Antique, senile, archaic
Peroration impending, not one to assuage
The human remnants of earth
Pandemic winds chill the soul
Eradication of the will
Nihilism extracts its toll
Frightening the meekly servile"

That was pretty good, I enjoyed it but I have to ask...Was it really the song you like or just the avatar
of the guy who posted it?  ;D

ah, you know me too well, mr. loki.  :P i love dark angel and volume 4 but they're so different it's a total coincidence that the avatar is as it is. i did subscribe to that guy, though, i mean, if he loves dark angel and vol 4, obviously he's someone i should be following. 8)

one of my rock comrades at work turned me on to these 2 groups

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEMeB2N8dic    Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tQJZWHU1Rk    BulletBoys - Owed to Joe        my buddy Bob at work said he's heard this many times and then one night while paying close attention to the lyrics, he realized it was a song paying homage to Joe f*ckng Perry of Aerosmith  8)

i still say mad max is the best, but i'm noticing that any car chase footage becomes immediately twice as cool if you put it to "ace of spades."

hey, how come there isn't a scooter action movie? i think we're ready. it should have lots of martial arts too. and some roadside bombs.

oh, and P.S.

lemme serving enter sandman. now that i'm out of that damn cover band, i'm so relieved i can quit pretending i find any metallica albums after and justice for all sufferable. i remember when i was trying out for double dog dare i heard they did enter sandman and i was like, oh, man, i dunno.

this is fun! in a crimes-against-humanity kinda way. although to be honest, i dont really care for the music until the guitar solo kicks in. that solo saves this sheesh.
