OK, so winter in New England is on the way.  That means a lot dorky people like these will get stuck in the snowbanks.  Do not offer assistance.  Do not offer advice.  These are irretrievable fools.  If you save them from suffering for their foolhardiness now, they'll just suffer from another f-up later on.  I have driven these back roads in winter on bald tires.  You get a feel for road conditions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HWMdCU4Uv0
Rule 1.  Go slooooow in snow and ice.  You think you're getting there slowly now, just wait until you're digging your way out when it's 5 degrees Fahrenheit under the starlight!
Rule 2.  When you do have to dig yourselves out, do so with a jovial can-do attitude.  Anger and frustration can lead to rage, which can lead to your wife hitting you over the head with a shovel, necessitating a trip to the emergency room, which is a delay second only to the Grim Reaper hisself!

If you are by yourself.  Look bewildered and confused.  That way people won't think you're one of those local irretrievable fools who ought to know better.

Postal was the only movie Uwe Boll ever made that lived up to the video game upon which it was based.

The depressing thing is that Uwe Boll gets the fundamental issue more than any politician (on either side of the war) who's ever done a stump speech on the issue in the past nine years.

THIS WILL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!

Severed Heads -- Meet the Severed Heads

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX0goKMpB4Y

Nettwerk signed them up figuring they were along the lines of Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly.  Nettwerk released about eight Sevs titles, but it just wasn't working out the Sevs are too weird.  Not Goth Weird.  Weird weird.  They're not Ogre and cEvin.  They're not Einsturzende Neubauten.  They're dorky Australian guys who like to play with computers and tape recorders.*

If you're not cued into artists from Pierre Schaeffer and John Cage to K. Stochausen and Christian Marclay, you can't fully appreciate what the Sevs did here.  They took all that Parisian Musique Concrete and art gallery electronic happenings and made dance club music with it!

"Revolution Number Nine (Dance Mix)."  That's probably in Tom's archives, never to be released for obvious reasons!  And they did it all without a formal music education and from the far flung city of Sydney.

The Sevs were instrumental (pun intended) in developing my current musical tastes!
:)

*and watch a lot of Monty Python.  They previously called themselves "Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign" as in: "Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign Go to the Movies," "Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign Go Cruising for Burgers," "Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign Contemplate the Philosophy of Life."

I notice Mr. Bump posted some Philip Glass too.

Chic sh*t from my time:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b26E0D2pm1c&feature=related

OK, 1976 wasn't my time.  Philip Glass had a surge in popularity in the mid-80s to mid-90s his music was more accessible than other minimalists such as La Monte Young or Steve Reich.  Glass also worked with Allen Ginsberg in the '90s.  The film "Koyaanisquatsi" (1983) was a major boost to Glasses name recognition. Glass almost refused the project because he didn't want to compose soundtrack music.  He changed his mind after he saw the cinematography.  "Hydrogen Jukebox" (1993) is one of Glass's best works.  A minimalist opera, this time based on a libretto by Ginsberg.  They had other projects in the works but Allen got sick and died in 1997.

Do not enter abandoned buildings.  You're breaking the law and putting your own health in jeopardy.  Nevertheless Urban Explorers made a local industry out of illegal exploration of the Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry.  This went on from 1990, the hospital's closing, to 2006, when wrecking crews finally started sealing the place off.  The place in now going for condo development or something.

The same thing happened in Massachusetts when they closed Danvers State Hospital in 1992.  Like Byberry, Danvers  had earned a reputation as a snakepit out of Dante!

Story of my life as a butthead.  Right now I produce a contemporary classical and experimental radio program.  I broadcast everybody from John Luther Adams to Evan Ziporyn.  I am particularly focused on exposing the 20th century music which NPR snubbed in favor of the Three B's Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach.  People use NPR classical on the commute and perhaps in the office.  No problem.  That's what chamber music is for.  I resent modern arrangers and conductors who dumb down Beethoven's symphonies so it didn't sound menacing, but it would sound merely vigorous.

John Luther Adams, for instance, lives in Fairbanks.  That's just what he likes to do.  The brutal climates he endures out in his cabin studio perhaps help him lend austerity to his music.  He writes a very sophisticated form.  Some CD titles: "The Mathematics of Resonant Bodies," "The Light That Fills the World," and "In The White Silence."  If you like percussion, start with "Strange and Sacred Noise"!

I was filming, Jorge was whistling, and Harry, Steve, Billy and I were doing the catcalls.

Seems like it was only yesterday, I miss working with those guys.

I've never been to Boston but it seems like it could be quite intimidating.  :o :o :o

Probably depends on what part of the city you're in, of course.

If you were coming into Boston on business, you would experience a safe city.  Even if you ran into angry kids from the poorer neighbors, they wouldn't bother you.  They go after each other over who stole whose girlfriend or who ratted on whom, or who dissed whom.  In other words, if you're not involved, they don't care what your up to.  If you're a big white guy, that's some extra insurance in both the North End and the South End.  The trick is not to involve yourself.

It's like the year I spent living an East Boston mob neighborhood.  I minded my own business.  They minded their own business.  I didn't go into Mangini's or their other hang-outs.  They never invited themselves up into my apartment.  Apparently, my landlord paid them off or something, so they never had call to come over torch the place!  If you see a known mobster walking his dog at 7:00 a.m., nod and politely say "good morning," if he tips his hat.  I wasn't a betting man and I wasn't in the market for drugs then, so I had no business with any of them

One morning the cops roped off a Trans-am.  Somebody did get whacked right outside the laundromat (also mob-owned).  I told police I knew nothing, and that was the truth.  Then I went on to work as I still had a job.  I heard rumors that Vinnie "The Animal" Ferrera having a rival gangster shot because the rival gangster terrorized Ferrera's mother while trying to get to Ferrera while "The Animal" was still in prison.

Again, if you tour Boston proper, you'd have no problems.  If you moved out into the neighborhoods, you could end not feeling so comfortable.  As a big white dude from the Midwest, I'd advise you to avoid Roxbury, and Dorchester altogether.  Dorchester is especially dicey because the neighborhoods are split between poor African-Americans and poor Irish-Americans.  You know, you think they could get along.  Both cultures love vigorous music and dance.  Both were exploited by savage colonialists.  BUT the similarities end there.

Once I learned to ignore the hustlers and the dealers I had no problem walking around in Boston and Cambridge

No, we don't have to worry about people posting all their old You Tube clips from 1975!  If you want to quibble over You Tube pre New Years Day, 2007 versus New Years

Anyway.  Here's to giving your buddy the whole blunt, getting him bombed, handing him the video camera, and entreating, "Have at it!"

What do you get if you cross Hawkwind, a big band, a Moog, and German instrumentalist James Last, and the year 1972?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF2ODWluPlY

You get win, lose, and Kerplowie.

And that was only the TV show.  The full album (JL 031: Non Stop Dancing 1973 - 1 (Polydor, 1972)) features similarly over-the-top brass band covering of not only Hawkwind, but Alice Cooper, Slade, the moog hit Popcorn, the theme from Shaft, and ends with a cover of before-we-knew-he-was-creepy Rock and Roll, Part 2.  Surreal, yet strangely catchy stuff.  The 70s were truly the decade that taste forgot - and the video is proof - yet it's so wrong it wraps its fail right around into win.

In 1993 filmmaker Derek Jarman (1/31/42 -- 2/19/94) was dying of AIDS.  The disease deteriorated his vision until he could see little other than fields of blue, hence the theme and minimal visual content of his final film "Blue."  Written and narrated by Jarman.  Music by Simon Fisher Turrner, with others.  The film was released just four months before Jarman's death.

This excerpt features three of my favorite sections:
1. Disco theme, "Impatient youths of the sun," with musical contribution by Coil (01:30--03:24)
2. "The side effects of DHPG" (04:16--07:12)
3. Speech on AIDS charity hospice (09:19--10:10)

Caution: strong language, adult themes (narration & caption)

Thanks (I think.)

What you said.  I watched the entire 7.5 minutes of the helicopter flyover video, which pauses due to problems in the feed to the Norway station that streamed and recorded it.  The guy in the truck that turned around and headed for the blue building didn't make it.  I already knew that (because another video immediately cut to a picture of a guy in a hard had for a few seconds), but I had to see it for myself just to be sure.

Here's the view (and the sounds) from inside Sendai Airport.

Backstory (from the track on the album, before the recording used in the accompanying video):

"Yeah, a month later and everybody's back in the party mood, and we're havin' a great time, but I'll tell ya when it happened, that was my hardest time of my life to be a comedian.  I had to play two days after the towers went down, in Toad's, New Haven, CT, my favorite club to play, but I didn't wanna be there, and I didn't feel like being funny, nobody felt like that.  So the time came, and I walked out on that stage, and the crowd started chantin' 'USA! USA!', and I felt the weight come off of my shoulders, and I knew what I was supposed to do.  I was supposed to party with my fellow Americans.  And somebody recorded that night.  So here's the sound of an American bar room, two days after 9/11."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkYRLQ3SVgc

  - John Valby, "Toast to Osama", track 14, American Troubadour, 2001.

Warning: Highly NSFW audio. The video isn't Valby's, but I own the album and the audio is the correct track from the 9/13/01 show.

For balance, I'd recommend Track 16 of the album.  Valby called the win for June 21, 2009.  Let's hope he was only a couple of years early.  For he had a dream, and it was good.

"...At the end of the dream, we still had to make a livin', still had to fill up the car with gas, still had to discipline the kids once in a while, but there was never a war again.  And whenever there was a natural disaster, everybody stopped and helped.  And within a year, there were no starving people anywhere.  And those who were poor, were poor because they wanted to be.  And they stopped fighting in Ireland.  And the Jews and the Arabs, they became friends.  And the Chinese?  They stopped re-educating people.  And the American corporations?  They became generous and farsighted.  Oh, I had a dream.  And it was good..."

  - John Valby, "I Had A Dream And It Was Good", track 16, American Troubadour, 2001.

And for the win, tracks 02 and 06.  Heh.

This Korean kid is really cute. Has more talent than Bieber and Yoko.

I wonder how many takes until he got it right. No wonder he's wearing diapers.

This is Legend Josephine Baker in the 1935 French Film, Princess Tam Tam. I got to see this movie a few weeks ago on TCM. It's kind of like a reworking of My Fair Lady, but without all the insufferable singing. It was wonderful for me to see a Black Lady as the lead, and not be resigned to bein ga maid or some other sort of help. She was a real lead and in gorgeous costumes and furs and things. It was wonderful.

You may not enjoy some of his films, but his impressions are wonderful.

Not sure what he is doing either, but the first 2 minutes must be a cover version of a Yoko Ono song. ;)

The Jacksons attempt at New Jack Swing. I like it.  8) Michael isn't on this track.
