Subject: Michael Jackson - A Celebration of his Music

Written By: Tam on 07/03/09 at 5:29 pm

I am surprised to find that no one has posted this yet.

I am not going to go into details about his life and career, if you want that you can pretty much find it anywhere on the web. The best I have found though is Michael Jackson.com or   Michael Jackson Wiki

What I want this thread to be is a celebration of Michael's Musical talent and genius! Which songs did/do you love? Heck, even which songs drove you absolutely crazy!

Which are your favorite videos? Least favorite? Favorite cover designs? Least favorite ones?

All things musically Michael Jackson!

I will gladly start!

First and foremost, my absolute favorite Michael Jackson song of all time is:
Leave Me Alone - off of the 1988 CD release of Bad as a Bonus Track
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5KAJw4y8wE

I love it because Michael makes fun of himself. He knew the media was having a field day with him, so he jumped on the bandwagon!

Second for me is
Farewell My Summer Love - a "lost" track off the album of the same name, later retitled.
picture video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFoLya5qt1w

Next is
Smooth Criminal - just because I can never sit still when I hear this song!
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5opHtf8cWY
The entire video always leaves me with my mouth wide open, wondering how the heck he did that!!! Pure genius!!!

Next is
Ghosts - it is actually a musical movie that lasts approx. 38 minutes. The song Ghosts appears on the album "Blood on the Dance Floor - HIStory in the Mix". Michael collaborated with Stephen King on this video and was released in close relation of Stephen King's Thinner.
video:

2/4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25_BuVIIujs&feature=related
3/4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u97iHjiVBdk&feature=related
4/4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cjoh06DiZY&feature=related

And for now I will end with
Earth Song - off of HIStory. Past, Present and Future, Book I
video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8muMo0fw_M&feature=related
I can't say exactly what it is that grabs me, but this song gives me chills every time I hear it.

I will add more as the thread continues, but please, feel free to add your comments or video links or song links. Remember, this is to celebrate his musical career. Any off topic or off color posts will be removed. ;)

Anything released after the 'Dangerous' album was off the radar for me.  Even the 'Dangerous' album itself I didn't really like apart from 'Black of White'

Anything he released from 'Off the Wall' to 'Bad' was great!  My all time favourite Jacko song though has to be 'Beat It' due to Van Halen's guitar solo.  That was just a wonderful mix of pop, rock and awesomeness!

I liked when Michael Jackson appeared on other people's songs because although he was a BIG star, his presence in the song was ordinary, and didn't overshadow the other artist(s) of the song.  He co-wrote and sang on the historic 1985 classic 'We Are the World' by USA for Africa.

He sang the chorus of Rockwell's 1984 hit 'Somebody's Watching Me'.

In 2006, a dutch dance group called Beatfreakz sampled 'Somebody's Watching Me', and paid hommage to Jackson with a Thriller themed music video.

And not technically related to his music, but one of my all-time favourite Michael Jackson related things was his very own video game.  Based on the movie of the same name, it was titled 'Michael Jackson's Moonwalker' and it included instrumental versions of his well-known hits.  The arcade version differed from the home version, and the idea was that Michael had to use magic to rescue children from the clutches of the evil Mr. X.  If you ever get a chance ot play them, you should.  They were very fun to play and the music is absolutely cool.  Check these clips of game play ...

My very brief summary...

'Off The Wall' - essential
'Thriller' - almost, but not as essential

Anything after that...er, no thanks!  :P

He also helped out bro' Jermaine on this...

My very favorite MJ song is "Wanna Be Starting Something".  I also love "Human Nature".

"Dirty Diana" always reminds me of my boyfriend in high school and makes me smile.

"Thriller" will always be my number 1.  It was the first song I heard by him, it was the first video I saw, and it pretty much set the tone for what music I listened to in my life.  I wish I could get my hands on a copy of "The Making of Thriller".  I used to rent that nearly every week when I was a kid because the whole concept of it was so fascinating...

MJ's got about 10 songs that sound good to me,
and not all of it from the '70s and '80s, or as a solo artist.

Some of his early stuff with the Jackson 5 (or just Jacksons) that I always like hearing

The Love You Save - The Jackson 5 (1970)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW_-4rLaHM8

Never Can Say Goodbye - The Jackson 5 (1971)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGodc6XtsG4

Blame It On The Boogie - The Jacksons (1978)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amN8UynV5pA

He even had one good song out in the '90s which is probably his last decent song too.

Stranger In Moscow - Michael Jackson (1995)

Great additions everyone!
I am going through my iTunes right now, listing the rest of my favs in order - or at least some semblance of order. ;D

Conveniently, I find that I did not add the second disc of HIStory to my iTunes, and of course I can't find the dang cd anywhere! And I am contemplating buying Blood on the Dance Floor - seems I never bought that one!

Hey Fart Factory--interesting name by the way--please do not call Michael  "Jacko". There is no one in the entertainment industry named Jacko. There's Bruno, but no Jacko.  ;)

It's Michael Jackson.  :)

And on topic, there's too many things to count from Michael. Gosh, but if I had to count something, gosh, I like the little known songs like "Fall Again" and "Fly Away" and "For All Time" Especially "For All Time" Michael hit it out the park and to MARS with that song! I mean I dig the more common stuf flike Thriller and Billie Jean , but "For All Time" is my number one.  ;D

I like anything from Off The Wall to Dangerous because it reminds me of my childhood to teenaged years.  Anything after Dangerous with the exception of Scream, You Are Not Alone, and Butterflies, sucked.  I miss Michael!  Ever since he died, my childhood and preteen years in the 80s died with him. :\'(

MJ's passing... I thought that's what brought you back
It did brought me back.  When I first heard about his death, I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO shock for a couple of days, and still is, and when I went to the record store two days ago and they was playing his old videos from back when I was a child, that's when it REALLY hit home, and when I went to the house, that's when I just started hysterically crying.  This has been the most DEVASTATING moments of my life.  I will never be the same again.

I stopped liking his music after 1995. His History album was his last good one.

The last 14 years of his career had no good music.

People like Elvis and him only come once every 30 or 40 years or so.

My most favorite song from him is 'Beat It' and my most favorite music video of him is 'Thriller'.

Well, you stopped liking in '95 so it isn't really fair to say that the last 15 years had no good music. I personally think that his last few albums had great music! From Blood on the Dance Floor to Unbreakable to Butterflies.... his music has always been amazing and has touched someone, somewhere.

Not to mention all of the previously recorded stuff that has yet to be released.... we are going to hear some more amazing music from Michael for the years to come! 8)

It's so hard to choose a favorite Michael Jackson song.  My favorite is probably.  "You Rock My World" off of 2001's Invincible album.  I just love that song.

A close second would be "Keep it in the Closet."  Plus the video with Naomi Campbell is super sexy.  I'm not sure if anyone's posted it yet - I can't get to YouTube from work.  But dang, it's great.

I also love "Don't Stop til You Get Enough," "Human Nature," "Smooth Criminal" and "Stranger in Moscow."

My all time favorite video is "Thriller."  No brainer there.

Amen to that.  The only song that I liked after 1995 was "Butterflies".  Other than that, give me music from Off The Wall to Dangerous.
