My list of ten worst songs to play at a party, ever....

10)  My So Horny -  2 Live Crew

Aside from probally a hard to find tune, it's also a song that's so bad, on every level.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0oALRL7uyY

  9) Perfect Day - Lou Reed

Over all, a despressing song, however play this song while people are drunk at a party, and there will a disaster.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYEC4TZsy-Y

  8)  Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Unless, your party is one hosted by an actual cult, complete with poised Kool AID.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpy_pYXSpPA

  7)  I Want To Kill You - GG Allin

For obvious reasons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuAI_YoKU34

  6) Cop Killer - Bodycount

Especially, if one of the parents, whose kids is at the party, is a cop. A bad idea, would be to play this song, also when the cops show up, to break the party.

  5)  People Who Died - Jim Carrol Band

Unless it's a punk party, of course.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkur2epZhyc&feature=related

  4) I Used To Love Her - Guns N' Roses

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXzr5Ip4vP0

Also, for obvious, reasons.

  3) The Piano Has Been Drinking - Tom Waits

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gwUtEEjZJ8

Another depessing song.

  2)  Macarena -  Los Del Rio

Because the Macrena, is sooooo early 90's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NZjHKfbbiQ

  1)  Who Let the Dogs out??- Baha men

By law, no party should play this song..... ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He82NBjJqf8

Runner up.....

Boom Boom Boom Let's Go Back To My Room - Paul Lekakis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK99cB3s-J4

They actually played this song, at my grade 6 graduation party, seriously.

Let's see, if anyone can top this list!

;D

One of the best scenes in 'Back to School' 8)

It is a good party song, I agree, but the title is suggestive that it shouldn't be ;D

From my experience of working as a DJ for almost 30 years, here would be my list:

Luka - Suzanne Vega
Dear Mr. Jesus - PowerSource
Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks
Little Girls - Oingo Boingo
Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Achy Breaky Heary - Billy Ray Cyrus
Rape Me - Nirvana
You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone
Mambo #5 - Lou Bega
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
I Touch Myself - The Divinyls

Now I am not saying these are all bad songs.  Some are really good, and iconic of an era.  But playing them at a party today will not be good, with reactions ranging from a "WTF" look, to a lynching.

I agree with many on your list. Good songs many of them, but they would get that look. Like "The chicken dance" would receive a similar look.

Hmm Now I'm wondering if it's just my family or a UK-wide thing  :-\\

From my experience of working as a DJ for almost 30 years, here would be my list:

Achy Breaky Heary - Billy Ray Cyrus

Mambo #5 - Lou Bega

The Billy Ray Cyrus one would only be played if someone who thought they could do line dancing was around.  Mambo #5 was played twice at the last big family party I went to in the UK.

Like "The chicken dance" would receive a similar look.

Also a firm family favourite.  Though my aunty June isn't quite so keen on it since having her hip replaced.  She can't wiggle her bum properly any more apparently!

Actually, since I also work as a DJ, I mostly "play the crowd".  And it is a skill I am good at, judging by their reactions if they are getting into the music I am playing, or if I need to change it.

2 weeks ago I worked as a DJ at the recreation tent.  I did a 3 hour slot, and played a lot of my favorites.  I opened with Spinal Tap (Tonight We're Gonna Rock You, and Clam Caravan), went on with some more of the same by Metallica (Turn The Page) and Aerosmith (Dream On).  Then I moved to some blues and reggae, then on to several funk songs.  I had some people request Hip Hop, so out came my Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash.  This followed by some more blues, and ended with country (which I had a ton of requests for).

But next time I do this, I am going to have a bit more fun.  I did not get a chance to do any Motown, and will probably throw in some Weird Al, just for fun.

And who knows, maybe I will do Chickendance.  :)  And I had already planned that if the Brits show up, I will play Is This The Way To Amarillo, and God Save The Queen (the Sex Pistols version).

There is so much irony to that, that it frightens me.  ;D

Depends what kind of party. If it's a 50th wedding anniversary party for a couple, playing any type of rap music would kind of kill things.

I disagree on some, as I've played some of these on Retro Dance Party in the past:

My list of ten worst songs to play at a party, ever....

10)  My So Horny -  2 Live Crew

Aside from probally a hard to find tune, it's also a song that's so bad, on every level.

I've gotten good response in clubs and radio to this one.  I guess it depends on the audience.

  8)  Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Unless, your party is one hosted by an actual cult, complete with poised Kool AID.

MORE COWBELL! :D

   5)  People Who Died - Jim Carrol Band

Unless it's a punk party, of course.

or 80's party in general where nobody's died recently. :D

Boom Boom Boom Let's Go Back To My Room - Paul Lekakis

I agree, that's not the appropriate place for that song.  Probably not appropriate for a cuddle party neither. :D

I'm always one for pushing the envelope, even though I know that most people want to hear familiar fun music at a party.  I've seen listener stats drop instantly the moment I put on something not as commonly known as the last song.  Peeps need to be edumacated though; there's more to dance music than terrestrial radio.

Rape Me would definetly be awkward unless it was Nirvana night at the place(which would be highly unlikely), thus the place being filled Nirvana fans.
