Subject: So what really constitutes a real man?

Written By: JamieMcBain on 08/01/10 at 7:44 pm

I am just curious, of hand off, because it seems the definition, varies from person to person.

Hopefully, I'm not steering a hornet's nest on this one.

I was by the way thinking of this, while listening to a song, by one of my favorite music artists, Joe Jackson.

Be attractive.
Don't be unattractive.

And according to the commercials...

Sometimes it is easier to say what is not a man than what is.

My mother once told me that if a man has to worry about his masculinity, then he has something to worry about. If he doesn't worry about it, there is nothing for him to worry about. This is one of the few times where my mother is SOOOOOO right. My first husband used to always say, "I'm the man. I'm the man." I finally asked him, "Why do you keep telling me that you are the man? Are you afraid that I'm going to forget?" He stopped saying it after that. (Yeah, he worried about masculinity and yeah, he had to. He was NOT a REAL man. He was a little boy.)

I really hate the saying, "I hate to see a grown man cry." To me, crying shows that you are sensitive, have empathy, & not trying to cover anything up. When I was first dating Carlos, we were watching a movie and I was fighting back the tears because I didn't want him to think that I so stupid for crying at a stupid movie. I looked over at him and the tears were streaming down his cheeks. I knew right then and there that he was a REAL man. And he doesn't worry about his masculinity because he doesn't have anything to worry about.

I am a man, but I've never really been highly concerned about what a man is, or what makes a man. I'm just myself!

A man has a woman who is his best friend, and comforts him in times of trouble.
A man has a woman who laughs at his jokes, and is cool at parties.
A man has a woman who is generous in bed, devoted to his pleasure and takes her own pleasure with him alone.
A man has a woman who challenges him, and makes him strive to be a better person.
But most of all, a man makes sure that those four women never meet.

 - with apologies to the anonymous author of the original quote.

He used to rent an entire cinema and show private viewings of "Dr. Strangelove" for his friends.  He also loved Quaaludes!  Couldn't get enough 'ludes.  That's why they're not such a problem today.  Elvis et e'm all!

Ah yes, this is from Summerslam 1991. The Big Boss Man (bloke in blue) vs The Mountie (bloke in red) in a jailhouse match. The loser would spend the night in jail and I think this is the only time a match like this has occurred. Unfortunately, this PPV was awful and would have been disastrous if it wasn't for the most excellent Intercontinental Title match between Bret 'Hitman' Hart (Canadian real man) vs Mr Perfect (American real man), lol.

I thought pro-wrestling was a lot more entertaining when it seemed like the wrestlers were brawling social outcasts with skeevy managers!  That era died out by the mid-'90s.  Everything became high budget and slick.  The exchange of insults and threats developed emotional subtexts like a nighttime soap opera.  I tuned it out.
:D

Anyway,

They say a real man shows his feelings.  The distinction is a real man knows when to let it out and when to keep a lid on it.
(Double entendre incidental, but I'll let it tag along!)
