Subject: ~QUESTION~

~Okay, it probably seems like a really dumb question, but i wanna know if drive-ins were still around in the 70s? I know that it was mostly a 50s thing though.

I saw Superman 2 at a drive in and that was in 1980.  Denver still had a drive in the mid 90's.

The last one where I live closed down in the 1990's and became a lumber yard.

I would say yes there were drive-in theaters in the 70s, but they only showed B-grade trash like "Friday the 13th" and "Beach Girls" or some other low-budget rip-off.  :(
After "Star Wars", the drive-ins started its decline.

I saw some good quality movies at drive-ins.  :)

They were still very popular while I was growing up in the 70's! In my experience, they began to close down by the mid 80's.  :-[

Then you must make an effort, sometime in your life, to go to one. There's just something awesome about viewing a movie from your own car (whether it's in the car or on the car ;D).

~Thing is that now a days there aren't many around. I mean there was one here where i live, but they made a mall in its place.

there's one in the town next to mine.. and a couple on Cape Cod still.. I haven't been to one since I saw Lady and the Tramp... I have a friend with a family that still goes to them though, since they are cheaper than going to see two movies at a theater... ever since I bought the convertable last summer, I've been thinking of going to one.. but just haven't been motivated (and I haven't been seeing anyone either)

There were lots of drive-in movies in the '70s and I did take my kids to see "Star Wars" there-though they were too young to remember. We still have a drive-in near us-the same one my husband and I went to regularly when we were dating.I don't think it is as much fun without the speakers but I guess the sound is clearer. This weekend they are showing"Big Fat Liar" and "Frailty".I've never thought of drive-ins as '50s because my sisters grew up then and they didn't get to go to the drive-in much-they had to be home by 10 p.m.Ha-Ha!

Two things pop into my mind when you mention drive-ins:  movies and restaurants.  THey were both around in the seventies and some still exist today.  Go online--there's lots of info.

They were definitely around.  We had 1 next to 1 of the 1st "multi-plexes" in the '70s (TWO big theaters).  Don't recall when I last went, but I did as a kid.  That's in Baltimore.  Now, it's a Home Depot (and the old multi-plex is a Circuit City).   >:(

Also western MD had 1 in Cumberland; that's the last I recall being at.  My aunt & uncle took us cousins to it to see "Fox and the Hound" and a re-run of "Swiss Family Robinson", early '80s.  But that's closed now too.

When I got my puppy this year, we drove by a working drive-in near Lexington, VA.

I remember one next to a multi-plex.  I also remember Bengies Drive-In and Ritchie Drive in (now a shopping center with a Mars Super Market and a K-Mart across the street from the Glen Burnie Mall).  Ritchie Drive-In lasted until the 1980s, and Bengies is still open!  For a while in the 90s, Bengies only showed "adult" films.  Here's a link to Bengies: http://www.bengies.com/main.html

the last drive-in I remember going to was in 1983 and my family took me and my brother to see Conan The Destroyer and War Games..it closed down some time after that and any that were left in the area were eventually knocked down. I still think there's one in operation in Massachusetts (state where I come from) that's near the Vermont border.

I think the last movie I saw at a drive-in was "Grease." I know there are still some around but few and far between. Too bad. I would love to see them make a come-back.

Bristol, Tenn. has one. It's closed for Winter right now. They have a video and trading card shop that stays open during that time.
