Subject: Songwriters vs. Songwriting Singers

Written By: Bobo on 05/21/02 at 00:16 a.m.

In my opinion, Brian Wilson wrote and sang songs to a very good level. Same deal with Lennon/McCartney/Harrison.

But there have been many people that have worked purely as songwriters (F+B Bryant, who wrote songs for The Everly Brothers, Goffin-King et al spring to mind)

Any opinions? I'll add mine later. I only added it in the BT70s board because those were the ones I could think of, but you can think of other examples.

Jim Steinman - although he did release one album, the strength of his songwriting is in what he did for Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler and others.

Certainly Holland-Dozier-Holland, with many motown hits.....and even though I can't STAND his voice, Michael Bolton has wriiten some nice things.  Chin/Chapman (I think) wrote stuff too...I'll have to research a little too!

H/D/H even influenced The Beatles. Listen to the Motown influence on GTGY Into My Life (do do do do do do).

Well of course I must say Cat Stevens! He was SO GOOD at BOTH singing AND songwriting! Now, I know Bernie Taupin wrote most songs for Elton John, and his songs are excellent, so for just songwriting, I go for Bernie Taupin!

SongWriters who write/sing their own songs seem to be more famous than those who write songs for others. The songwriters who write songs for others are the unheralded heroes of the music world.(unless they write tunes like "Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the Old Oak Tree")

Thanks for the laugh. But it's so true. Of course, the greatest people are those that can manipulate words to such a level as VDP did on Orange Crate Art (among other albums). His standard of songwriting is one that I'll always look up to and try and aim to myself, having just started writing myself.

I can think of Desmond Child, who co-wrote a lot of songs with Kiss and later Alice Cooper and others, Bryan Adams, and Diane Warren. Also Prince, Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen often write a lot of songs for others they don't always record themselves.

You know, IMO he is just a little too theatrical for me...too dramatic all the time...all of his stuff sounds the same...I can always tell a Steinman tune, even before I look to see the credits...

This is true of many songwriters, tho...

Especially those that try their hand at musicals, or, by the same stroke, musical theatre which becomes more about the drama of the song than the content. Freddie Mercury, of course, was a marvellous stage presence, but matched this with a great voice and a personality (how many of today's teenybopping popstars can say that)?

Actually Bernie Taupin was/is Elton's lyricist....EJ writes all the music and BT writes all the lyrics.....he even had BT do the rewrite on Candle In The Wind when Princess Di passed....

Which then became the world's best-selling single.

Yes, but not because it was any good, just because of a morbid outpouring of guilt and grief made people think they had to buy it.  It comes way, way out on top of my "most annoying songs ever", and its only redeeming feature has been the parodies written to it, e.g. "And it seems to me, that you lived your life, like a candle in the wind, not giving much illumination, you were terminally dim"

;-)

Yes, but his use of words, and the rhythm of words is superb.  I love the OTT drama of his stuff (especially when it's Meat Loaf singing them - he can get so much expression into his vocals that the songs can really take off).  I've often started parodies to his work, but can't keep up the style for long enough.
