Subject: Bob Dylan

Written By: Indy Gent on 05/22/02 at 05:48 p.m.

My opinion of Dylan is the same as The Beach Boys, overrated. He wrote some good songs, but he never had a great voice. And his songs have been "overdid" by the musicians that came later. Plus his attitude, on the recent documentary "Don't Look Back", didn't help his public standing very much. Was Dylan a legend or a fake? ???

http://sassy_elj.homestead.com/files/tinyglitter.gifBob Dylan? Hmmm. Im thinking its that guy who sounds like he's really board or something. Kind of like Sting too.

Sting has a pulse, at least...I wonder about Dylan sometimes.... ;)

I think Dylan is much better as an influence "digested" by other musicians. He had a huge influence on Ian Hunter and Elliott Murphy to name a couple, and they are infinately better than he is.

I think Bob Dylan is a legend.

First of all, he is one of the best songwriters of the 20th century, managing to make beautiful music, with meaningful lyrics and not preaching at the same time.

Secondly, I may be in a minority here, but I absolutely love his voice, there's something about it that makes his songs much, much more passionated.  For example, Peter, Paul and mary's cover of The Times They Are A-Changin' is easier on the ears, but for me it doesn't stir up anywhere near as much emotion, same thing goes for Mr Tambourine Man and the Byrds' cover.

Finally, Bob Dylan's social awareness, IMO, is better than that of any other band or musician before or after him (The Beatles inclusive.)  He managed to write songs that completely fit the time or the situation, and because of that, goes down as a legend for me.

Hmmm... I was reminded of this thread when I was driving home on Friday, and "Hurricane" came on the radio.

For a direct call to social action, I don't think anyone of the past 20 years (and possibly 30, but I've only been paying any attention since about 1980) can touch this song's venomous, chip-spitting intensity. Modern songwriters seem to work purely on a metaphorical or (at best) illustrative basis, such as Springsteen's "Born In The USA" or Suzanne Vega's "Luka".

And of course, Bob could actually sing, back then  ;)
