Subject: Arlo Guthrie

Written By: RockOn on 05/28/02 at 06:35 a.m.

I found two songs from Arlo Guthrie on the Internet and they both had two different names for them.
1) City Of New Orleans or Good Morning America
2) The Motorcycle Song or The Pickle Song
Can anyone tell me what the real names of those songs are?  ???

Well, the first one should definately be "City of New Orleans" because that's what it says on the 45.

The second one I don't know the correct title--but I remember it well...

I don't want a pickle; I just wanna ride on my motorcickle...  :D

Zella is definitely right about song #1.  As for song #2, I'm not sure of the title, either.  I do remember hearing it a lot in my youth (my dad had the record).  Funny song!  ;D

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys. The problem I had was I got the songs from Blubster. With Blubster you can talk with the people you are getting the files from. No one really new what the names to the songs were so after coming up empty looking for a website I decided to come here. I was satisfied with the name you gave, City of New Orleans but I still wanted to know the name of the other song. I went back to Blubster and was talking with someone who turned me on to this website http://www.arlo.net/ I found the songs "City of New Orleans and The Motorcycle Song". I guess that solved that problem in my life. Thanks again guy's and Rock On 8)

On Arlo's stereo album, "Alice's Restaurant", one of the songs is listed as "The Motorcycle Song".   My personal favorite from Arlo, hands down, is "My Front Pages".  It's a great song.  The first time I ever saw Arlo live was in S.F. circa 1970 when he was the opening act for "Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Ponies".

City of New Orleans was written by a wonderful Chicago guy by the name of Steve Goodman. Arlo borrowed the song and it made it a radio hit.
Steve also wrote a beautiful song called The Dutchman.

Arlo Guthrie is one of those artists whos best work -- in my opinion didn't get any radio air play. For example - Gabriel's Mother's Highway Ballad #16 Blues - Last Train - Darkest Hour.
