Subject: What is your favorite love song of all time?

Written By: randbfan23 on 06/14/02 at 00:10 a.m.

Mine is definitely "Me and you", by Kenny Chesney, I also like "On Bended Knee".  I also like New Edition's "I'm Still In love with you", and any love song from the 70-now.

There are too many to pick one but I will for now.  It's the song written by the late Pete Ham & Tom Evans from the group Badfinger, who originally recorded it but handed it over to the late Harry Nilsson.....Without You.  It was then of course butchered by none other than Mariah The Screaming Banchee Carey :o

Well, there are quite a few love songs that I like, both before and after the 70s. I've always loved Yesterday and Surfer Girl by The Beatles and The Beach Boys respectively. Curiously, Baby Talk, by Jan and Dean, is also one of my favourites.

Without You, by Nilsson, of course, also.

**

It has been covered by Mariah Carey? Oh my gawd, please, like, totally do not make me listen to that version, if you don't quite mind.

From the "Before The 70's" time realm, I'll give an honorable mention to:

Nat King Cole & George Shearing - "A Beautiful Friendship"

I can't pick just one as my favorite love song of all time. There are too many good ones and too many decades to consider, even before the 70's!  :o  ;)  :)

Here's a few that spring to mind from that era:

"Besame Mucho" as performed by Ray Conniff And His Orchestra
"Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley
"Red Roses For A Blue Girl" by Bert Kaempfert
"These Eyes" by The Guess Who

Mind you, I have too many songs that would fit this category - seeing as to how songs in general are love songs, if you think about it...

Actually, I quite liked it (well, it did go over the top at the end, but knowing what her voice is capable of, it really sends shivers sown my spine waiting for her to launch into the 3rd line of the chorus for the first time).

My fave would be Tunnel Of Love by Dire Straits, although it's more of a "lost love" song.

Hmmm....

Someone to Watch Over Me by George and Ira Gershwin.  You want to get the Sarah Vaughan version.

Let's Do It by Cole Porter.  If you can find it,  Louis Armstrong has an 11-minute version that simmers.

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered by Rodgers and Hart.  Try the Frank Sinatra one.

If you want to mainline the love thing, get any of the Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaberation albums.

Anyone who loves music - or even just a particular category - has to have an impossible time picking just 1 song of any type.  Personally, there are tons of "love songs" I love from many eras - but since this is a "before '70s" board and there truly was more class in the old days, my very very favorites have to be from before the '70s - and so many more!!  But I can't choose.  But I'll mention just a few I can think of now.  "There Will Never be Another You", "I'll Never Smile Again", "Sentimental Me", "I Look at You", "I Only Have Eyes for You", "Dream", "Let it be Me".  (I'm a sucker for Johnny Mathis and the Everlys....and Platters and Ames and .....oh forget it!)

There are a number.  The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."  Ben Folds' "The Luckiest."  INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart."  The Beatles' "In My Life."  But the highest on my list is from a girl whom I have several fond memories of and who told me it was her favorite song.

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes."  The closest a song has ever gotten to making me cry.

I love the Platters and that was very good, but I liked their serious love songs that much better.  "My Prayer" is awesome; "Harbor Lights" (a cover), etc.

My definition of love song is that it has to be about as slow and sappy (for lack of better terms) as it can be as well as have the correct subject matter.  Too many listed aren't really love songs to me - too fast or loud or whatever!

My favourites that spring to mind are :

As many have pointed out already, there are just too many, and on different occasions, different songs are the most appropriate.

Also, there are two dimensions here: Which song would you choose to express your love? Which song would you most want to hear from your beloved?

Taking that all into account, any song better than Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" has got to be awfully good. But I wouldn't argue against "Let it Be Me," either.

_Not_ taking all that into account, it's Aretha Franklin's "Never Loved a Man," no question.

From this era (before 70s), I love 'Teenager in love' by Dion and the Bellmonts. I'm not sure whether it was the original version (I know Marty Wilde sung it on one occassion).

As an overall favourite, 'Never gonna give you up' by Rick Astley is the ultimate great love song. It just stirrs something inside me (few songs do that) and is upbeat - I hate slow, boring love songs that seem to go on forever.

So many --lots of 'em mentioned here-- let me add just a thought or two...

I've always wanted to hear Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" reinterpreted as a slow-and-steamy soul ballad... think of what the late James Carr ("Dark End Of The Street") could have done with it, or maybe Solomon Burke in his prime -- even someone likeTeddy Penderass, if the latter-day soul-crooning style is more to your taste.  I honestly think it'd be wonderful interpreted in this way.

But all else being equal, I can't think of a more heartbreakingly beautful love song than "Out Of Left Field."  Percy Sledge's 1967 version is probably the best-known, but if you find his version a bit too teary and bathetic, check out the spellbinding acoustic version by the song's writers, Dann Penn and Spooner Oldham, on their "Moments From This Theatre," recorded live on the Proper label a few years ago...

"When least expected, fate stumbles in / Bring light to the darkness, oh what a friend... She made a mountain of love / from a li'l grain of sand / and suddenly:  out of left field came a lover and a friend..."

There are so many, as usual.  You can't pin it down.  But 1 I just happened to hear - which is very rare, now, and partly why I crave it - which makes me just about stop everything is the '50s version (Flamingos?) "I Only Have Eyes for You"!    8)

Anyone heard, "Loving You" by Minnie Ripperton?  It's a beautiful love song, but in one part she gives this earsplitting screech, aheeeeeeeeeeeoooo.

Gosh, there's so many to choose from!  I guess my all time favorite would be John Denver's "Annie's Song". My name isn't Annie, but I still almost get weepy when I listen to it, and wish some guy would sing it to me. Just listen to the lyrics: "Let me die in your arms" and "Come love me again"

Another notable mentions:

A lot of Simon and Garfunkle tunes: -"Scarborough Fair" "Kathy's Song" "Dangling Conversation" "Groovy Thing" "For Emily"

The Beatles' "Like I Love You"

The Doors' "Touch Me" and "Love Her Madly"

(In )Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel cuts deep.
And to be truly out there...think "Ave Maria" and the extreme number of times it has been done - like Stevie Wonder's take on it.  Undeniably great, but a bit too whatever for most....

load the jukebox.

"Take A Bow" by Madonna is a beautiful listen and the video is superb also! "Are You Lonesome Tonight" rates very high. "In Dreams" and "Running Scared" by Orbison are wonderful. The Madonna song is after the seventies but I couldn't resist mentioning it.

ROCK ON!
