In the mid-late 50's and early sixties in the San Francisco Bay Area we called the popular teen dancing "Bop".  That same dancing in PA was called "The frug".

Charleston, jitterbug, Philly. Any dances mentioned in Land of 1,000 Dances or Nobody But Me. What was your fave? What do you remember about these crazes?

I remember the pony, the monkey, the swim, and (of course) the twist. Years later there was the hustle and the bus stop (I think-it was very similar to the hustle).

The Stomp (an exaggerated Mashed Potatoes)
The Madison
The Fly
The Chicken

Listen to the end of Claudine Clark's "Party Lights" for a brief catalogue of popular dances at that time.

Many of these dances were just record company inventions to sell their product, but others actually spread from dance party to dance party throughout the land--or region anyway.
