Subject: JIM Morrison or VAN Morrison?

Written By: RockandRollFan on 12/24/02 at 07:56 p.m.

I always preferred Jim and the Doors.  I like Van alright but Jim had many more songs. The Doors were one of my older brother Bills favorites, so I had early exposure to them.

1-0 Jim ;)

Jim was cooler, but Van Morrison is more talented and made more good music.

This is hard - I didn't mind a lot of The Doors' stuff, but IMO Jim Morrison was terribly overrated.

On the other hand Van Morrison in the main sends me to sleep !

So I'd have to say "Neither"  :-/

I heard once that Jim Morrison liked Amsterdam and since I liken Van to music that puts me to sleep, I'll take Jim.

I have to say that I really like both of them.  Hard to choose because their styles are so different.

I like both. But if I had my druthers it would be Jim.  :)

Definitely Van Morrison because I'm partial to blue-eyed soul and Moondance is one of my favorite albums.  I also like the Doors but the reason is not Jim Morrison, it's Ray Manzarek's (sp?) organ playing.

Jim Morrison, although Van is good too.
I was a big fan back in the early 80's (teen years) of the Doors, trouble is I heard them so much that I burnt out on them.

Hey, for the record, Jim did a pretty bad job of Van's "Gloria."

YES!  Very overrated!

I would have to go with Van Morrison.  He's done a few songs that I've liked...

Definately Van for me.  I actually worked for him in the UK in 89 - while I knew all his songs - I had never ever seen a pic of him so I actually had no idea who it was I was working for until a few months later when I saw "my boss" on a talk show !!!!!

With Jim - I dunno - i have this thing about singers who are suddenly deemed "genius's" after they die.  To me a genius finds a cure for cancer - they dont just write a song.

I like a few Doors songs - but I love all of Vans songs.

Don't Blame Jim for the tag put on him after his death...We should all blame the stupid media :P

Seriously, though, your point is valid.  These days the media builds people up while they are still alive, and that is even worse...

e.g. : Bye, Bye, Miss American Pie..... >:(

I don't get the American Pie reference.  What point are you trying to make?

Pardon my oblique-ness, Kenny

I refer to the abomination of that song by MAD-onna.... :(

Oh by no means do I blame any artist for the tag they recieve from the media.  I would have to really sit back and think hard to find an artist who has actually come out and called themselves a genius.

It is totally the media. One hundred percent.  And too many of the buying public who are gullible enough to believe what the media tells them.

:)

I suppose we're different on this level.  Yes, finding a cure to cancer would deem someone a genius, but don't you think someone who has the ability to touch you so much, to move you, to inspire you, deserves that genius tag as well?

Movies and music can do that to me, and for that I call the filmmakers and the songwriters genius'.  For the simple reason that they can make me feel

Well said Beatgen. When I was younger and going through some seriously depressed times, Jim Morrison and The Doors' music always made me feel better...nothing against Van by ANY means...It's only that I prefer the long list of IMO, great songs that Jim and the Doors offered ;)

I think you have made the best point BeatGen. Any time in my life things have begun to fall apart I have turned to music for solace. Or I can get lost in a movie. Music can touch me at a level that is beyond conversation somehow. So whether it be Jim or Van, or anyone else who has made music like "Brown Eyed Girl" or "I'm Gonna Love You" certainly must have some touch of genius. They don't cure cancer, but they cure my blues, or allow me to indulge in my grief/love/happiness/sorrow....

Jim had more peak value, but Van had more career value... hmmmm... I'll go with Van...
