Subject: As I Duck For Cover On This One...

I do think The Beatles are a bit overrated.  :-X

Don't throw rotten tomatoes at me just yet...

I think many more bands/artists are just as equally overrated.  ;D

<I'm still ducking>

Alright, where's my wrecking ball...?

Just kidding.  In my mind only Ringo is overrated.  The Beatles were revolutionary as a group though.

I do like The Beatles, don't get me wrong. I just don't like to assign particularities in the musical revolution to any specific group/band/artist. But that's just me.  ;D

Ringo was the heart of the Beatles, and an underrated drummer.

He was underrated because he was sh***y.  He was there as a sex symbol (for goodness knows why).

Ringo ?  Sex Symbol !   :-/

Ringo was brought in because Pete Best refused to change out of his teddy boy clothes and ducktail haircut, and suit their new image....

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but only being forced to listen to Beatles could really harm me.... ;)

I enjoy the Beatles' music a lot but I am not a huge fan.  I think they were extremely talented and happened to come out at the right time (which has everything to do with how sensational a band will be).  But I also think a lot of other bands/solo artists deserve just as much recognition.  Now if you ask me who is overrated, I will tell you ELVIS PRESLEY!  :P  (But that's another thread altogether!)

I think the Beatles has been overrated in the last few decades-AFTER they broke up. How many "new" albums have come out since that time? Anthology comes to mind. When they were making music together, they were very revolutionary. They created sounds that were never heard before. Now, many groups have been influenced by the Beatles and copied their style. It is that "retro" thing that never seems to go out of fashion. I still listen to them a lot-not only because of the nastalga aspect of it but because they played GREAT music-no matter what decade they made it in.

I am a huge fan of the Beatles, but I think George, Ringo and John had their best work post-Beatles.  Paul was the only one who didn't move on from being a Beatle, didn't mature as a songwriter, if anything he regressed IMO.

Anyway, that's another story.  the Beatles as a group were amazing, not only for their music, which was great, but also their movies, particularly A Hard Day's Night.  They were revolutionary, but they were not the only ones.  The revolution came in the form of several bands.

This is just IMHO, not everyone will agree, but for introspection it is the beatles. Most of their music for me is comfort food. For partying and just jamming it is the Stones. But you can vice versa that on some of the songs (Tears Go By the Stones is wonderfully poignant and sweet, while some Beatles music is just pure fun (Hard Day's Night comes to mind). This is just one of those wonderful and rare cases where I can have them both!  ;D

I'm not big into the charts much anymore but...NOBODY has ever approached the Beatles record of having the entire top 5 and 8 of the top ten all to themselves :D

Weren't the only ones to even come close to this the BeeGees with their "Night Fever" soundtrack?

My point I make about the Beatles is this:

The 252 tracks they made come nothing close to describing their whole history as a unit, from the early days in Woolton and the surrounding area, when a young, promising guitarist James Paul McCartney was to meet up with John Lennon, possibly starting the greatest collaboration in music history.

Must stop quoting books... my point is, that from how much we hear about The Beatles, a lot of it gets shrouded in myth, a lot of it gets confused with the truth. A lot of the interesting stuff in Beatles history is to see where exactly the myths and the truths have crossed. This is the main attraction to them for me, as a dedicated listener.

Yes...but I can't tell you the exact stats though.... :-/ I just know they didn't have to whole top 5 to themselves...maybe with Andy thrown in ???

ya know thats the same way I feel about Elvis....grant it he was the beginning of an era...but I think there were other indivduals that contributed just as much to the music industry...maybe more...look at Jazz..they had some incredible musicians...Dr. John for one you never hear about them.

I agree in one respect but on the other they were truely talented in so many ways that other bands were not.
