Subject: A horse is a horse...

HOLLYWOOD, California (Variety) -- A horse is a horse, of course of course -- unless that horse is a new version of "Mr. Ed" in active development at Fox.

The network will reshape the classic horsey comedy so that Mr. Ed will speak with a more urban voice a la Eddie Murphy or Eddie Griffin.

The pilot for the Original Television project will be written by "Saturday Night Live" scribe Jack Handey.

"This one is so in (Handey's) strike zone," Original TV chief Dawn Parouse said of the scribe, whose "SNL" creations include "Deep Thoughts" and Toonces, the Cat Who Could Drive a Car. "He loves talking animals, and we love the fact that he loves talking animals."

The original series ran on CBS for six seasons from 1961 to 1966.

This had better not suck.

I'll bet you $1 that it will suck.

I think that would be like trying to bring back the Brady Bunch.....how do you duplicate something like that. I mean the Brady Bunch was somewhat funny for a movie...but not a weekly series....they royal screw up one of my favorite sitcoms from the 60's "Family Affair"

I think the reason why they come up with movies and revisions to all these old shows is because no one can come up with anything new. Just recycle the old ideas. The thing that they don't count on is the fact that most of these revisions SUCK!!!!

These are the days of No creativity, No originality, No inspiration, No talent,....

And then people wonder why I think the majority of everything has seriously sucked since the end of the 1980's.  ::) :P

The 1980's were the last original decade.

What they continue to do with the re-doing of old shows and movies is sacrilege, IMO.  >:(

I have wonderful memories of Mr. Ed.

Who's for a Hollywood producer-lynching if it DOES suck?  Which it might, so let's start now :)

I can't help saying this - the orginal sucked  >:(

But I agree, any remake will be a major mistake  ::)  Cause it will suck more  ;D

Here's what you should all do: Don't watch it. Then it will disappear into oblivion whether it sucks or not. Which is where it should go.

Why would a horse speak in an urban manner? Just putting aside the fact that horses can't speak at all, if they could, wouldn't they have more of a rural or rustic speech pattern. They mostly live outside of urban areas, after all.

They're obviously trying to have him speak like the donkey in "Shrek". Listen, here's a novel idea. If you're gonna remake "Mr. Ed", why don't you have him talk like ..... uhhhhh ..... Mr. Ed?
And are they gonna have a heavy metal band to do the backward-message theme this time?  ::)

Actually... American Dreams is pulling in a very respectable 12 million viewers, which is about 2 million more than "Weakest Link" was getting, same time slot, in the previous year.  NBC ordered 25 episodes-- 3 more than the standard 22, indicating that the network plans to extend the season before airing repeats.  If you're not seeing promos for it, you can partially blame your local NBC affiliate.  {Frankly, I hate the show, but wanted to let you know that although not in the top 20, American Dreams is still doing fairly well in the Nielsens.}

As for Mr. Ed...  WHY?

An urban-talking Mr.Ed?
What's the world coming to? ::)

I agree totally, Hairspray. Hollywood has completely lost their originality. What IS it with this remake kick they're on?! I hate it!

I don't know, but there are no signs of it slowing down.  :-/

My guess is the reason we're seeing so many remakes, and IIs and IIIs and IVs is because movies and television are businesses, and it's easier to sell something people are already familar with, something that proved popular in the past, then take a risk and try to make something from whole cloth.

I mean, if you were risking tens of millions of dollars, wouldn't you hedge your bets?

And that, in a nutshell, is what's made these last years so predictable and boring in comparison to decades from the 1980's on back.  :P

OMG, I agree totally! Question: How do you make a horse lame? Answer: Besides breaking his legs? Make a bad sitcom about a talking horse! Besides, I really don't think PETA would allow that treatment these days, and it was never a really a good premise.  I think America was a little more innocent back then.  It would'nt fly these days....but I am probably wrong!  ::) :P ;D

Why did anyone think that watching one girl dance on American Bandstand every week would be a great idea for a show? How many ways can Daddy disapprove? Just my opinion, of course. I mean no offense. ;)

Remember, it was the 60s ;)  Talking horses, genie in a bottle, nose-twitching witches...I grew up watching these shows on Nick at Nite and I loved them.  Good clean shows for a simpler time ;)

Probably cause they think they'll have easier yucks from a ghetto horse than a suburban horse.
Another remake that I thought was terrible was the one they did of The Incredible Journey.  The one with the two dogs and the cat traveling hundreds of miles to reunite with their human family.  I saw the old Disney version when I was in grade school, have seen it a couple times since, and still think it's a great movie.  In this original, there's a voice-over narration.  The animals are just... animals.  Okay, they were Disney animals, so the cat wasn't slaughtering every animal in sight, as cats are wont to do; and the dogs weren't rolling in putrid piles of you-know-want-to-know-what-it-is, as dogs are wont to do.  But it was a sweet little story, simply told.  I still mist up waiting wondering whether Bodger will make it over the hill...
It was remade, followed by a -II.  Michael J Fox and a couple other people did the animal's "voices" and by so doing, I believe, took some of the magic away from the original story.

Furthermore, I don't consider movies like "Rollerball" or "Spider-Man" to be remakes because they were adapted from books.
