Subject: who else sang

Written By: karen (Guest) on 03/05/03 at 09:33 a.m.

I've got a track on a cd of Alma COgan singing The Railroad Runs Through the Middle of the House.

Did anyone else ever record it.  I just wondered because railroad is an American term but isn't Alma Cogan English?

You are right julie, Alma Cogan was born in London.

Can't help you with the song though.... :-/

The line should be "The railroad COMES through the middle of the house".

The song is called In The Middle Of The House, and one other person who recorded it was Rosemary Clooney.

Thanks JPT.  Is Rosemary Clooney American then?  I don't think I've heard of her at all

Internet Search came up with the following information:

Vaughn Monroe, Milton Berle, Bob Hillard(?), Rosemary Clooney, Alma Cogan and Rusty Draper.

Rusty Draper, who also popularized "Freight Train" with a pop single in the 1950s. Draper's recording of "Middle of the House" ended with the sound of the train coming through.

Lyrics:
"The railroad COMES through the middle of the house".

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOUSE - Vaughn Monroe

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The trains all come through the middle of the house
Since the company bought the land.

They let us live in the front of the house
They let us live in the back
But there ain't no living in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

When a bill collector comes to the house
He knocks and bangs on the door
So we sit him right down in the middle of the house
And he never comes back no more
No, he never comes back no more.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
It comes and goes through the middle of the house
And the trains are all on time
And here comes the 5:09.

The railroad comes through the middle of the house
The in and out of the middle of the house
Right smack dab through the middle of the house
Where the parlor used to be.

There's a great big door in the front of the house
There's a little old door in the back
But we can't have doors in the middle of the house
'Cause that's the railroad track.

A relative came to visit the house
He liked to scream and fuss
So we sat him right down in the middle of the house
And he never more bothered us
No, he never more bothered us.

Oh, the railroad comes through the middle of the house
The railroad comes through the middle of the house
It comes and goes through the middle of the house
Since the trains are all on time.

I'm singing this song in the middle of the house.

Another Version ends with:

Since the company bought the land.
(Recorded by Vaughn Monroe and Milton Berle)

I'll print the words out.  My daughter (age 4) loves this song.  The version we have also ends with the train sound and the last words cut off.  Every time my daughter asks what happened to the lady singing!

My inlaws vaugly remembered the song but think they heard it by Rosemary Clooney.

"I'm singing this song in the middle of the house."
Tell Your daughter the lady singing moves to the front when the whistle blows.   She'll sit and watch the railroad train as she sings the song again.

Alma WHO? Alma Cogan - only the most successful UK female singer of the 1950's!! - Alma who..indeed!

But apart from her version, there was also a UK charter from Jimmy Parkinson, who also had the first UK hit version of "The Great Pretender" - can't find too much about the guy, but he was an Australian based here at the time...

It is an American song - I have copies by Rosemary Clooney and Rusty Draper as well as Alma's...cover versions were all the rage in the 1950's...

They're a dangerous breed, mate
So watch me wallabies feed
Altogether now!

CHORUS:
Tie me kangaroo down, sport

Ah, don't go acting the fool, Curl
Just keep me cockatoo cool

So that's why we never hear this song on the radio anymore! I bet Rolf is pretty embarrassed by these lyrics today.

I actually like a lot of Rolf Harris songs - Jake the Peg and The Court of King Caractacus spring to mind. I used to enjoy wathcing his TV show when I was a kid as well...can you tell what it is yet?

Rosemary Clooney was a big star in her day. I believe that she was the star of "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby. A big hit song of her's was "Come on a my House" and also "This Ole House"
She was married to Jose Ferrier and I believe that she's Migual Ferrier's mother.(Not sure I spelled all the names right)

We were only trying to make Kangaroo politically correct.

'I want my mummy' is one of my daughters favourite songs (after Jake the Peg).  I did start a parody of it called 'I filled my nappy' but wasn't sure if anyone else knew the song.  Maybe I'll give it another look.

Political correctness just tends to get a wee bit silly sometimes.  Why not just accept Abo's were - are still are - called Abo's.
All of my aboriginal friends refer to themselves as Abo's.
And they live in Bassendean where Rolf was born !!  And none of them have ever had an issue with the lyrics of the song.  Actually come to think of it - I know not one single person who has ever had an issue with it !!

Crikey - I didnt think ANYONE would have heard of I Want My Mummy !!!!  I always figured that most UK people knew the main hits like Two Little boys etc (cos my pommy hubby always sung it).   But I didnt expect that any of his littler songs were known of !!!!

hubby and I like Two Little Boys. I saw the Stars in Their Eyes thing that Bobby was talking about with Jarvis Cocker.  He did an excellent impression of Rolf and a good rendition of the song.  He even had a Stylophone to play at the end (Rolf advertised these on British telly in the 70's).

I don't think I have a copy of Two Little Boys in fact but we have a CD with Jake the Peg and I Want My Mummy on it and another CD with Court of King Caractacus by another singer.  My daughter knows all the words to all three but can't sing the last one fast enough!

OMIGOD are you serious ?  thats how you guys read that line ?

See this is what happens when political correctness gets too far ingrained in peoples minds.  Suddenly the Gollywogs disappear from Noddy books, Big Ears isnt allowed to sleep over anymore - and Rolf gets rewritten !  Next thing George in Famous Five wont be allowed to be called George !!!!!

I dont have a copy of Two Little Boys either - I cant remember when it was actually released but it could have been after my 1968 cassette.  Believe it or not - I had never heard it till I lived in the UK in 88/89 !!!!!  When people there found out I was Aussie they would sing it to me and assume I knew it !!

I guess that people only look at each verse in isolation.  It isn't until you get to the last verse that you realise he is dying (or already dead).  Also since most people aren't farmers or whatever then letting the staff go and making other arrangements probably won't occur to them?

My husband kept all his old Noddy books from when he was a child and now we read them to our children.  He happened to end up with two versions of the same book (Noddy and Father Christmas).  One has the Golliwog in and one doesn't.  Mr Golly isn't a bad character here, he sings in Noddy's choir and proposes a toast to Noddy at a meal.  In the second book Mr Golly is replaced by a teddy in the choir and Mr Tubby Bear proposes the toast.

I had a golliwog as a child that I loved literally to bits.  I never thought it was a caricature of a black person it was just a cuddly toy.

Wow Karen those books woud be rare collectors items these days.  I had hundreds of Enid Blyton books as a kid but my father threw them all out when I was travelling overseas :(

And yep I had a gorgeous gollywog doll - he was taller than me.  And I never felt he was any different to the rest of my dolls.  But then I had (and still have) friends of every race, creed and colour. So my gollywog was no different to my balinese dolls, my singaporean dolls, my maori doll, my dutch doll etc.

Thats why I feel the zealots have taken PC too far.  Its all just silly now.

BJ26 - to tan a hide means to skin a body, then prepare the hide (skin) with tanning solution (generally a tanner does it at a tannery) so that it is preserved.
My mum does it regularly to sheep skins to make rugs for the floor and ugg boots and sheepskin vests  etc.
Hence the line "and thats it hanging on the fence" - it would have been getting dried out.

Actually I am sure that if Rolf thought people were taking such a deep analysis of each and every flaming verse of what is simply a novelty song he wrote in about 3 minutes in the early 60's - he would thing they were basically insane.  He is a pretty laid back guy who has never forgotten Perth - where he was born - he returns every few years for school reunions etc.

But I shall appease you in case the lines have you in a quandry !.

A wallaby is a mammal similar to a kangaroo but smaller - they range from ankle high to waist high.

A cockatoo is a large bird, comes in black, white, black and white, black and red.  Many people keep them as pets as they larn to talk quite well and live to 70 or 80 years old so they are generally a lifelong friend.

Curl - nickname given to anyone with curly hair - my grandfather has been known as Curly for 87 years.

A koala - a tree living mammal that rears its embreo in its pouch like a Roo does.  Lives on eucalyptys leaves.  Breed rampantly in some states but is near extinction in others.

Platypus is a monotreme - and animal that lays eggs but suckles its young - only two monotremes in the entire world and both are in australia - the other is an echidna.  Originally named the Duck Billed Platypus due to the shape of its bill - unusual animal that Billy Connolly states was put together while God while he was stoned.  Webbed duck feet, a ducks bill, and a beavers body - and what th heck - it can lay eggs but produce milk.

Didgeridoo - indigenous musical instrument - made from hollowed out long tree limbs - when played well it can sound awesome.

Blue - nickname given to anyone with red hair.

I think that was all the main lines.

Actually I am sure that if Rolf thought people were taking such a deep analysis of each and every flaming verse of what is simply a novelty song he wrote in about 3 minutes in the early 60's - he would thing they were basically insane.  He is a pretty laid back guy who has never forgotten Perth - where he was born - he returns every few years for school reunions etc.End Quote

Yeah, Rolf Harris always seemed to be a very easy-going person. I loved Rolf's Cartoon Time. I think he would laugh at this analysis. Did he really write the song in 3 minutes? That's well quick!

When my kid was little, she couldn't say "pLatypus", she said "patypus!"  Anyway, tis an interesting place Australia, with all kinds of exotic animals, songs, musical instruments, and customs, but having oneself skinned and tanned is still gross like in the song, "tan me hide when I'm dead Fred, and hang it on the fence, etc. yuk :P.

Rosemary Clooney was a great singer from the 40s and 50s.  Showed up most notably in "WHite Christmas" opposite Bing Crosy, and sang "Count Your Blessings" and is also well known for "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (I like her version better than Judy Garland's).

I think she is George Clooney's aunt or something like that.
