Subject: Best British band since the Beatles

Written By: IanMac on 03/29/03 at 03:29 a.m.

Simply Red and the mellow vocals of Mick Hucknall (don't let Mick's more outspoken faux pas spoil your judgements) are without doubt the best British band since the Beatles if not of all time. What do you think??????????

Sorry, IanMac - with respect I disagree.

Simply Red are on my personal 'avoid' list - their music simply puts me to sleep.... :(

Half way through the opening line of "If you don't know me by now" and I'm head down.... ::)

They're most famous for "Holding Back The Years." A good song, imho. Not exactly the best band from the UK, but they do have some good songs. I really like the video for "Holding Back The Years" as well. That one ranks as one of the best I've ever seen (right behind Visage, The Human League, and UB40!).

After watching Mick Hucknall on www.rathergood.com - I've seen him in a complete different light. :)

(If you decide to check it out, look to the left han side under the subheading of 'sh*t is good' - click on 'simply red, hey mickey and holding. Be warned: its disgusting sexual humour!)

Anyways - Simply Red are no way the best British bands since the Beatles! Sorry, my opinion, but they're nowhere near!!

British bands which deserve a lot of credit:

The Smiths (I know - I'm so predictable ;))
The Jam
The Police
The Clash
The Sex Pistols
Oasis
Blur
etc...

While all of the bands mentioned so far are pretty good, what about the Kinks? everyone knows of "you really got me" and "all day and all of the night". They were incredibly talented and did wonderful things while in the shadows of mega-groups such as the who, the beatles and the jimi hendrix experience

The Kinks are really good. Most people know Lola but that is my least favorite of theirs. I really love the song (I think it is called) "In the Summertime."

It is the UK in general or just the British area?

For my pick I would have to go with U2. I just dont care for Bono's solo career. Strange I feel the same way with the rolling stones and Jagger :P

Get real! Floyd has sold more records than most of those bands put together. Right now as we speak Gilmour is as good a guitarist as there is(or very very close) Got Division Bell playing as I surf!

Personally, it's a toss-up between The Stones, The Kinks, or The Move - but The Move just about wins it...

Some people may know 'em better as one of the early incarnations of ELO...

...anyway, back to the fight!

Badfinger was a pretty well balanced pop group with a number of hits.  There is a group called XTC from the 80s that is probably about the best group.  You can hear strands from the Beatles, Steely Dan, and probably others in their music, which is extreme melodic rock.

Ok, some of these probably aren't considered the best to some people but they seriously control my CD player and dominate my computer.

-Duran Duran :-*
-Adam Ant :-* or Adam and the Ants( take your pick, its the same thing)
-The Rolling Stones(duh)
-David Bowie ;D
-Depeche Mode
-The Sex Pistols
-The Clash
-Pink Floyd
-The Police ;D
-Peter Gabriel
-Thompson Twins
-Queen

There's more but I just had a brain fart, so another time for the rest.
