Subject: 1960s  &  1970s Radio Memories

Written By: AstringOfPoloponies on 05/26/03 at 04:40 p.m.

The radio station we listened to growing up was WABC Music Radio.Back than, the only advertisements on the radio were for food, drink, cosmetics/toiletries, a couple of amusement parks and a raceway. The DJs were superb ~Cousin Brucie,Johnny Donovan, Chuck Leonard,Dan Ingram.

During the beginning days of the Beatles, the station called itself "W.A.Beatle C."

What are some of your childhood-teen memories of radio ?

I could get WABC all the way in Akron! :o

Our local ma and pa radio station was WAKR. They played top 40, but you were lucky if you heard four song in an hour. The rest of the time was weather, news and commercials. And everyday at noon they played: "Hymn for the Day" - "brought to you by the Adams Funeral Home...." ;D

WHLO was at the other end of the dial and was a bit hipper, and then later in the mid 70s I listened to WGAR out of Cleveland and WCUE. WGAR featured an Aussie DJ named Jan Torf "Torvy" and WCUE had an incredibly obnoxious morning DJ who called himself "Sweet Richard." They played the best music, but I couldn't stomach listening to it in the am. After about 11 pm at night they changed format and became almost like an 'fm' station - I remember they even played cuts off of Bill Wyman's 1974 solo album...

By the end of 1974 I had given up on AM radio and switched to WMMS Cleveland. I was lucky - I grew up with the best radio station in the country and heard a lot of music that people in other areas didn't get to hear. WMMS had no playlist - the DJs played whatever they wanted, and they 'broke out' may new artists such as Springsteen and Patti Smith before th rest of the country heard of them...

In Brisbane we had this great AM station in the 60's and 70's called 4IP (4 = Queensland & IP = Ipswich, in those days a mere town to the west of Brisbane).

Their callsign was "Colour Radio 4IP" and you could get stickers from the petrol (gas) station, very important if you were a kid !

Top 40 all the way, but that was in the days when Top 40 was almost guaranteed to be something you liked.... ;D

Then in the early 80's we got the first decent FM Station, 4MMM, which played classic rock, and I mean good stuff.....

But as with everything else it all turned to crap soon enough....

Now just about every station caters exclusively to the 13-25 market...

Sigh  :( :( :(

The 2 NY stations were fab, WABC and WMCA, I think they had B. Mitchell Reed and Harry Harrison.  There was this great station in Cincinnati, W???, with Dusty Roads.  There were WAKE and WPLO with Bobby Dean in Atlanta (my town).  I used to lay in bed with my transister and try to pick up the NY and CVG stations, man, radio was great back then!

Akron? I can top that. I was living in Miami at the time, and after midnight, especially in the winter, I could get WABC (NY) and WBZ in Boston.  What was I doing on Friday and Saturday nights listening to the radio instead of being out with my girlfriend?  Because, being the class nerd, I didn't have one.

Our local stations in Miami in the Sixties were WQAM (still exists, but it's all talk now) and WFUN (their place on the AM dial, 790, now occupied by WAXY-AM.  When I visited down there in 2002 I heard a Catholic talk show called Radio Peace.)  The two stations had ridiculous rivalries.  WFUN had a slight bit more of an edge to it; WQAM, one of the oldest stations in Florida, had converted from a country station in the Fifties and still kept some of its old listener base; any counrty song with any crossover appeal at all was big on WQAM.  They had a DJ named Charlie Murdock who would sign off with his 2 and 1/2 year old daughter Martha Sue saying "Goodnight, Daddy, I love you."

The rivalry got vicious when WFUN hired Morton Downey, Jr.
(yes, the future TV talk show host) as a DJ.  He called Murdock "Mudrock", and would parody Martha Sue as a hysterical, screaming brat.  Whenever either station ran contests, the fans of the other would call in and insult the DJ.
Eventually, people statred getting tired of the mindlessness and began discovering FM.

Used to listen to PLJ around '79-80. They did play some great R&R. Then I used to listen to WPDH in Poughkeepsie. The last I heard, they are still playing that "Old time Rock and Roll."

We had CJIB AM940 while I was growing up in small town BC...then at night we could get CFUN AM1410 which played ALL the good rock songs...when I moved to the big city it was 99.3 the Fox that rocked. I've been to NYC twice (96 and 01) and both times I listened to nothing BUT PLJ...I love that station!

Oh man I'm SO disappointed. When I was last there in '01 they were playing GREAT stuff...80s, 90s and current...of course I was there to see Bon Jovi and it seemed they were playing Jovi every 4th or 5th song!! ;D ;D ;D ;D  Still, I don't recall hearing any of the boy bands or bubblegum girls during either trip...and I listened to PLJ a LOT!

I went from 4 to 14 (almost 14) in the 60's.  I remember having a transistor radio.  My brother and sister were in high school.  We lived in Springfield, MO.  They listened to the station KICK.   The first song I remember really liking enough to listen for on the radio was "It's My Life", by the Animals.  There was a station in Little Rock, Arkansas, KAAY, that barely came in at night.  At 11:00 P.M. I think, they had a program called "Beeker Street", and would play underground rock.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?  And does anyone remember E.G. Marshall and that spooky show that came on where the door squeaked and slammed and there were all kinds of macabre episodes?  I moved to Kansas City, MO in 1969 and could still get KAAY and loved to listen to Beeker St.  There was a station here: KUDL-FM that played underground rock all the time.  Now they're a soft rock station.  Those were the good old days when FM was young, a minimum of commercials and lots of music.

The cool stations out of the Philadelphia area I could pick up were:
WFIL-AM. In the 60's,they were THE top 40 station in my area!!
WIBG-AM,which also played some underground rock

FM stations:
93.3 WMMR!The station that fed my love of the almighty LED ZEPPELIN! They also played other cool bands like YES and EMERSON,LAKE,and PALMER!They also broadcast live concerts in SQ Quadraphonic sound.
WIFI 92,played Top 40 stuff in FM Stereo!

My favorite radio station NOW is WMGM 103.7 "the Shark"out of Linwood/Atlantic City NJ.
They bill themselves as "the home of CLASSIC ROCK in South Jersey!"My fave "Shark"DJ's are Pat DeMarco and Brandon Maxwell, those are two of the coolest DJ's I've ever heard. "Shark" is cool with playing people's requests,I get my songs played lots of times!

Well,we had ProFM (proAM's brother)kiddie bubble gum,WBRU(Brown University, alternative to the core),Still had WGNG AM which was an ecletic mix of everything a'la classic AM radio,
I only heard one DJ from back then still working last year on a Cape Cod station,Big John Bina.He was on ProFM

Then in 81 or 82 82 I think......we got WHJY WOW! If you wanted to listen to good stuff like this you had to pull in WBCN and on an old one unit stereo that wasnt easy LOL
I started listening to that from the beginning and for you familiar with it back then Carolyn Fox did the morning show with "Big Dick" that was her first show on there. Before that she was "Janet from another Planet" on BRU :)

I still listen to a lot of Boston stations.Where else can you get anything like WZLX around here?Good stuff dammit :)
WBCN is still rockin along. And since I was a kid due to classical piano I listened to(shhhhhhh)WCRB all classical.I guess if youre used to playing it its kewl kinda.I still listen to it now and again.

Wow I listen to the radio too much ;D
