Subject: Was Sally Field a teen idol?

Written By: APS on 06/27/03 at 11:33 p.m.

While watching a VH1 special, I thought about several popular teen actresses from TV from the past 50 years. (They mentioned Alyssa Milano & Sarah Michelle Geller) and noticed that Sally Field, yes the actress, was popular in TV's "Gidget" & "The Flying Nun".

Like Milano (from "Who's The Boss"), she was cute and perky.
(Both now look great and still acting...& avoided type casting roles)

I wonder if she was that popular back in the 1960's?

I don't know, APS. I think she was in 'Steel Magnolias' and I know she was in 'Mrs Doubtfire'. Anything before that I wouldn't have a clue.

You didn't have the mass marketing BS then that yuo have these days, APS.

Consequently she worked hard and became a very well respected actress...

We have yet to see whether the talents (as such) of Milano and Geller can take them anywhere in the longer term....

John Travolta & Mark Wahlburg were also "teen stars" who later became serious actors. I'm also not trying to compare Field with Milano.
Though I do predict a great career for Frankie Muniz & Kirsten Dunst.
BTW, I don't follow current "young actors" for their looks.
Ashton Kutcher's cool, but I doubt that he'll be the next Travolta.

I did research by reading other boards (I've never been to)  & comments from other sites.

I read that some guys had a crush on her and girls wanted to be like her. That probably would fit her in the "so & so" category.

Why sure, I am one of the little kids who wanted to be Sally Field (Gidget) and or LaRue (her friend) when I became a teen !Back than it was Sally Field and Patty Duke (on the Patty Duke Show ).

Back than, it wasn't such a big deal who was beautiful or who dressed what way - there were a few shows on TV . Many of the shows were about family's which had teens in them. I do believe that Sally Field was featured in 16, Tiger Beat , Flip and Fave Magazines-I pretty much can bet on it. So, if you made an appearance in those mags, it was official, you were a teen idol. Bridgett Hanely from "Here Come the Brides" was even in the mags back than and I don't think she was as young as Sally was. :D

She was in teen mags!!! She even had a very good "friendship" with Davy Jones of The Monkees. They were both good lookin' teens and made a great pair.

:-/ The only '60's teen idol VH1 mentioned on their "Top 50 Teen Idols" countdown. Most of the teen idols from the list are from the  '70's, '80's, '90's, and some from today.
They even left out The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Annette Funicello, Frankie Avalon, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin,  "Marky Mark" Wahlburg, and Madonna.
And they placed Britney Spears as #1.  :-/

Error corrected: The special was "50 Greatest Teen Idols", not "40 Greatest Teen Idols".

Though I don't really care since VH1 did ranked an Eminem song in the top 5 spot on "25 Greatest Songs of the Last 25 Years" and show case too many current teenybopper & rap acts in their shows/specials.  It's not the same network as it was before. I know they didn't showcased Spice Girls, Hanson, Marilyn Manson, Backstreet Boys, rappers, etc. during the late 1990's.
(It's now an E!/current MTV knock off)

Until "Legally Blonde II" as Rep. Rudd.  :-/
(She reminded me of an older version of "Gidget")

Well, atleast she's  a critically acclaimed serious actress.
