Subject: Least favorite song(s) from the 1950's & 1960's

Written By: Mix Tape 3K on 08/02/03 at 00:22 a.m.

In my opinion, the worst song from  the '60's is, hands down, Tiny Tim with  "Tip Toe in the Tulips".  :P

My second choice is the lollipop song.
The one that went, "Lollipop, lollipop, ooh la lollipop..."

Thankfully, my local oldies station doesn't play both of those songs.  :D

Mary Hopkins' "Those Were the Days" is the most vile song I've ever heard in my life.

There are several but the ones I can think of at the moment are:

Do You Know the Way to San Jose-Dionne Warwick
Turn, Turn, Turn-the Byrds
Hound Dog-Elvis (and others)
Birddog-Everly Bros (Sorry, Marian)

Cat

There are lots, but "Judy in Disguise" and "Cinnamon Cinder" ("It's a _very_ nice dance" Oh yeah? Kapow!) head the list. And anything by Gary Pucket and the Union Gap, also winners of Most Annoying Rock Group Name .

I fully agree with Mix Tape... Tiptoe Thru The Tulips was not only the worst song of the 60's, it's in the top ten worst of all time.
The only other really bad record I can think of from the 60's was a song called "Paralyzed". The local DJ played the heck out if it simply because it was so bad. For those of you who don't know, it's essentially a paralyzed person playing and singing. Needless to say, it was banned rather quickly.
Talk about poor taste, and then some.

:o :oGlad to hear it's not the same song that elvis and the drifters made famous, although that song does contain the line"I'm gay every morning, and at night I'm still the same" :-[Cheers1

I'd have to think hard, but generally I'd say there's plenty annoying from the '60s.  Not only do I not much like the hippie-whining and moaning stuff, but the fluffy fey nasal-twang stuff (esp when applied to a nice-nice song) and those twanging guitars(?) (to wit:  the Turn-Turn-Turn song mentioned) was too much.  Some of it I like, some of it depends on my mood.  But at least, I could do w/o it.  I can't think of much that annoys me from the '50s.  I'm sure there's some specific song I mite not like, but generally I like '50s stuff.

Never liked "Mr. Moonlight" by the Beatles nor "Brown Eyed Girl" or Van Morrison in general.

I've got to agree with "Tip Toe In the Tulips". I only heard a clip of the song while I was watching TV one night, but that said it all, and Tiny Tim must be one of the worst singers ever!

What I can't believe is that somebody listed Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl". That's such a cute song.

The songs that I find pretty vile from the 50/60s are "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies, "Hey Paula", "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison (definitely overplayed), "Wishing and Hoping", and if it is from the 60s, then definitely "MacArthur Park". I'm sure there's others, but that's all I can think of.

I liked that song, it was called "I will follow him" by Peggy March. I have to say that anything that came out of Tiny Tims mouth was extremely annoying, it goes right through me.
I also want to add the song "The Name Game" by Shirly Ellis, just plain awful  >:(

Banana-fana-fo!

Not sure if this was ever a worldwide hit, or just confined to Europe (where it was massive), but Esther & Abi Ofarim's 'Cinderella Rockefella' (1968...and I hope it stays there!) just sets my teeth on edge...!

Teen Angel by Mark Dinning ("Yuck, girl gets creamed by freight train, while clutching boyfriend's high school ring"), An Open Letter To My Teenage Son by Victor Lundberg ("If you burn your draftcard, burn your birth certificate with it! And from that day forward - I have no son!"), Is That All There Is? by Peggy Lee (Peggy is bored with life, dies, stands in front of St. Peter, looks at Heaven and remarks, "Is that all there is?" - - - No, there's Hell - Goodbye!)(the most depressing song ever recorded - until Janis Ian's"At 17" came along).

And... and... and, it's Lesley Gore.  The much-underappreciated Lesley Gore, in my opinion. :)

Here are my favorite and least favorite for each year of the sixties.  All the songs made it into the Top 40.

1960
+ Beyond the Sea – Bobby Darin
This may be my favorite from the 60s.  At least I’ve been listening to it a lot lately.  Isn’t Kevin Spacey supposed to be doing a film on Bobby Darin?
-Puppy Love – Paul Anka
Maybe the worst song ever.  What a mewling, desperate, ungroomed, drippy, veneral mongrel of a song.  Anka’s singing on this brings to mind an image of a dirty, unclipped mutt dry-humping Aunt Gladys’ varicosed and be-stockinged  leg.  Your first reaction is a desire to kick it.  The worst thing this side of Bobby Goldsboro.

1961
+ Stand By Me – Ben E King
- Daddy’s Home – Shep & the Limelites
I always thought the lyrics to this one were creepy.  Why would anyone name their kid Shep?

1962
+ You Don’t Know Me – Ray Charles
Ray puts on his stetson.
-Speedy Gonzales – Pat Boone
There were a LOT of television and movie performers cutting vinyl in the early 60s.  James Darren, Hayley Mills, Burl Ives, some kid from the Donna Reed Show.  As testament to my lack of taste I like a lot of it.  Walter Brennan chanting “Old Rivers” is okay.  Pat Boone’s “Speedy Gonzales” offends in so many ways…

1963
+Donna the Prima Donna – Dion
-Dominique – Singing Nun
Movie and the television series weren’t much, either/

1964
+Viva Las Vegas – Elvis Presley
This may not be the best song of the year, but I think it’s the perfect marriage of song, performer and time.  No one has ever recorded a truer version of this Doc Pomus song.
-My Bonnie – Beatles
Yeah, right, they exploded on the scene and all, but this is a dreadful, dreadful, dreadful little song.

1965
+Marie – Bachelors
All I can say is I like vocal harmony groups. Again, weird tastes that I’m not particularly proud of.  “Marie” is probably the last Irving Berlin song to hit a top-40 list.  He wrote this to his wife in 1926, or something.
-Say Something Funny – Patty Duke
Two votes for this naggy little ditty.

1966
+Tar and Cement – Verdelle Smith
Yeah, I know, NOBODY’S ever heard of her, but this is a good song.
-The Dangling Conversation – Simon & Garfunkel
How do you spell “pretentious”?

1967
+To Sir With Love – Lulu
Awww…
-Epistle to Dippy – Donovan
Deep, man.  Deep.

1968
+(Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay – Otis Redding
If anyone voted this the top song of the decade, I wouldn’t have much of an argument with them.
-Yummy Yummy Yummy – Ohio Express
There’s something seriously wrong about a decade that saw animated characters charting a top-ten song.

1969
+This Magic Moment – Jay & the Americans
The second Pomus song on my list.  Hmmm.  Jay was a hell of a singer.
-Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye – Steam
If you’re a sports fan, you probably understand this pick.

(Probably inspired from the movie)
Though Sally Field sang on the show. :P

;D  Hello, gang!  Just dropped into this site while doing some research on some songs of the fifties.  Lots of great- terrible songs were mentioned.  Naturally I liked some of them, but to each his own.  The Name Game was probably among the top ten for sure.  But for great ones - how about Ed Townsend's "For Your Love?"  Or Jerry Butler's "For Your Precious Love?"  58 was a heck of a year!  I mention these two and stay away from all the number one songs because some were great and some were pathetic, to say the least.  You guys are very interesting; I may come back to visit now and again!  Take care, Don
