Subject: Elvis Presley

Written By: Bobby on 09/04/03 at 03:30 a.m.

Initially I didn't like Elvis. I thought he had made himself out to be a charicature (explaining the many Elvis impersonators about) but he had some great songs.

My favourites are 'Return to Sender','Hound Dog','All shook up' and 'Wooden Heart'.

Anybody have any Elvis-ish views to make?

I couldn't understand why so many females fancied him because I only knew him as he was towards the end.  You bloated, huge sideburns and those godawful shiny suits with big collars.

Then they did a run of Elvis films one summer holiday and I could see the attraction.  I think he was good looking when he started out.

I like a lot of his stuff and haven't really got a favourite.  Jailhouse Rock is pretty good IMO.  I can't listen to Lonesome Tonight any more, Michael Barrymore spoilt that one for me.

There were numerous quality male vocalists who did not receive a lot of air play at the time. Elvis was one of the few who were comercialized.  It is rumored that had Carl Perkins not had his auto accident, everything would have been Perkins related today, not Elvis.  Perkins had a better voice and wrote most of his music.  If one listens to the 50s rockabilly music, it has a tendency to drive women wild.

I like Elvis' music but, like Karen, could never see the attraction until I saw a few of his old movies.  My favourite songs would be "Heartbreak Hotel", "In The Ghetto" and I also like the new song that's getting a lot of airplay in Aus at the moment "Rubberneckin'".  I can still remember my much-older- than-me cousins weeping when they heard of his death.   I could never really understand all that carry on.  I saw an Elvis impersonator last year (Dean Vegas - apparently he has won the international Elvis impersonator award)  who was very, very good but the biggest laugh we had all night was watching his fan club.  They were priceless.  I did actually see one of my aforementioned cousins hanging around the stage!!  I always think of poor old Elvis as being a tad odd.

I can remember hearing about his death on the radio.  That evening a friend was saying about her older cousins being in tears all day over it and I couldn't understand it.  Then again I was only 7 or 8 at the time.

I was never a big Elvis fan and like others, I just couldn't see why everyone went "gaga" over him. But, I do like some of his music. I bought a cassette tape of his a long time ago and never opened it.

Heartbreak Hotel
In the Ghetto
Don't Cry Daddy
I Can't Help Falling in Love With You

Some of his movies are ok but not great. But the one song that he sings that I really can't stand is Hound Dog. I think that is the most stupid song.

He had his quirks, didn't he?  :D

Apparently, that knee-jerking he did was because he was so nervous on stage. He also had a very close-knit mafia style gang with him and had few friends beyond it.

The irony is that for the King of Rock and Roll, he died such an undignified death (in the bathroom). It was also the same room he proposed to his girlfriend!

This might be blasphemous to Elvis fans but I like Pet Shop Boys version of 'Always on my mind'. It is wonderful.

I was about the same age too.  I can remember my aunt coming home crying hysterically.  I was totally mystified as to why she was so sad, because we didn't know Elvis personally  :)  About as weird as the 35-40 yr old women I saw raving about The New Kids On The Block at their concert in '89 or '90.  :P

I always wondered why Elvis Presley never tried his hands with funk music before he died? ???

I don't think Elvis could adapt with the times. I could be wrong but I reckon if he was still alive, I think people would take him less seriously (think Leo Sayer . . .)

It's like what someone said; 'Death is probably the best career move you will make' (or something to that effect).

I liked Pet Shops Boys' version of "Always On My Mind" but I think the slow version by Elvis is not bad too..

A Little Converstion is great ....I like the way Elvis sang in it.....

Wonder if any remix by any other person would sound this great too ?

I never really liked elvis but with this commercial on vh1 about the ultimate collection I realized that some songs were good!
And like all of you I think that when he started he was pretty. And oh all those female girls (the ones called vintage now  ;) ) crying so much in the audience lol

I like "hound dog", "in the ghetto", "can't help falling in love", "suspicious minds" and "always on my mind" the best.

Elvis had a nice baritone voice, but there were countless other rockabilly artists, anyone heard of Dale Hawkins, Carl Perkins, The Phantom, Sleepy Labeef from the 50?  There was a punk rocker named Robert Gordon, late 70s early 80's who was backed by Elvis' singers and guitarist Link Ray, Gordon had a really smooth baritone voice and a fresh fish special which stood up about 6"!

Regardless of how Elvis ended up, I have a great respect for his contributation to the music world. Just as with Jimmy Hendricks. The way they lived their lives can never take away from the contribution they made to music.
I love Elvis's Christmas music.

I only heard about 10 seconds of it on the telly. I suppose it's not enough time to give a song a chance. I'll try and listen to the full version later.  ;)

:o :oYeah,i think he looked better when he started out,but a LOT of people looked dorky in the early 70s--it wasn't just him,to be really fair.Cheers! 8)

Marian

I think it was more the weight he put on towards the end. Any good looks he had were lost in the bloating. And I guess he was twenty years older than he started out!  Lots of people change as they get older.

My mum raves about Cliff Richard but to look at him now he's nothing special (IMHO) but again if you see his earlier performances and films then he's not bad looking.
