Subject: the first SPECIAL OLYMPICS-when and where?

Written By: NASCARnut on 11/29/03 at 02:06 a.m.

When was the first SPECIAL OLYMPICS held, and where? I know Eunice Kennedy Shriver started Special Olympics, and she started a GREAT way for the developmentally challenged to compete in sports! There's also the Tournament of Champions program for learning disabled and emotionally challenged kids as well has wheelchair bound kids. What do you think of Special Olympics, and it's participants? I think those athletes are awesome, some are in better physical shape than I am,they run marathons and stuff! Whew!

Why has no one answered my question? Did I offend by asking a question like this? Is SPECIAL OLYMPICS taboo to ask about?

O.K. a quick Google search revealed lots of pages for Special Olympics organisations.  Each US State seems to have one plus many other countries.

On the U.K. site I found this page which gives a bit of the history behind the Special Olympics.

http://www.specialolympicsgb.org/i1.html

It says the Games started in 1968

A little patience on your part is in order.

sorry I got impatient, thanx for the link. I was a participant in something akin to Special Olympics, called the Tournament of Champions, which is for emotionally, mentally, and physically challenged kids and teens. I was on the track team  and also did the softball throw. This was in 1974.Needless to say.I'm a couch(or make that Internet)potato now!
