And now, the obligatory waffle from yours truly...!

1960 - I Love You - Cliff Richard & The Shadows
Just to prove how long Cliffie's been in this game...! A rather non-descript piece of early '60's British pop, it did however manage to keep the two Christmas offerings, Adam Faith's 'Lonely Pup' (bad!) and Nina & Frederick's 'Little Donkey' (even worse!), out of the picture...

1961 - Moon River - Danny Williams
You'll probably know the song (a standard as soon as it was written), but not this version - sung sweetly by a South African ex-pat who was one of only a handful of Black artists to top the British charts at this time...Jerry Butler done a wonderful version too...

1962 - Return To Sender - Elvis Presley
Elvis' only visit to the top at Christmastime came with this piece of fluff that he was churning out with alarming regularity...incidentally, that same Christmas week saw a new band enjoying their first hit - The Beatles with 'Love Me Do'...speaking of whom...

1963 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles
Having shot to the top of the British entertainment tree within a year, the next logical step was to go global...this was the song written expressly for that purpose. To say it achieved its aim would be an understatement...out of all the records sold in Britain that year, 56% of the total had 'The Beatles' name on it...!

1964 - I Feel Fine - Beatles
With global domination achieved, the Fabs became more adventurous...this was the first record released with deliberate 'feedback' applied to it...

1965 - Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out - Beatles
By now, EMI had realised that 'The Beatles' and Christmas equalled 'huge sales' and their releases were being deliberately timed to that fact...this was the first double-A sided Beatles single to be released here...

1966 - Green Green Grass Of Home - Tom Jones
No new Beatles product around, so the field was wide open this year...The Seekers aimed for the 'kiddies' market with the awesome 'Morningtown Ride', but the 'mums and dads' market won out with Tom's definitive reading of the 'condemned man' classic...

1967 - Hello Goodbye - Beatles
Them again! Not only at the top, but also at #2 with the lavish 'Magical Mystery Tour' EP package...the film (shown by the BBC on Boxing Day that year) was panned by almost everyone...

1968 - Lily The Pink - Scaffold
Paul McCartney's brother Mike was part of this off-the-wall Scouse threesome who had the hit of the season with this sanitised version of an old Rugby song...perfect for a drunken singalong...

1969 - Two Little Boys - Rolf Harris
Australia's most famous export (apart from the beer!) came up trumps this year with this song shamelessly aimed at the 'kiddie/mum and dad market', so how could it fail? Fondly remembered by a lot of people, it celebrates its centenary this year - the song, not Rolf...!

My 2 sense:

1960 - I Love You - Cliff Richard & The Shadows - never heard it but probably ok, liked Richard's rockabilly style.

1961 - Moon River - Danny Williams - never heard it, loved Andy Williams' cut.

1962 - Return To Sender - Elvis Presley - nice and poppy with just the right touch of country and blues.

1963 - I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles - totally gear!

1964 - I Feel Fine - Beatles - gear

1965 - Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out - Beatles - gear

1966 - Green Green Grass Of Home - Tom Jones - sickening

1967 - Hello Goodbye - Beatles - liked it at the time, but not anymore

1968 - Lily The Pink - Scaffold - never heard it, but Mike M'gear was cool.

1969 - Two Little Boys - Rolf Harris - never heard it, but from the title, sounds creepy as is Rolf.
