Written By: Stevie B. on 02/02/04 at 05:42 p.m.

I would have to say my top 5 were: 1. "Leave it to Beaver". 2. "The Honeymooners". 3. "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis". 4. "Bewitched". 5. "I Dream of Jeannie". Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Dobie's my main man!
I also like
The Monkees
McHale's Navy---
(What's all this about, McHale, what what what?)
Get Smart! (who woulda guessed?)
Leave it To Beaver
Dragnet (not a sitcom, but it sure is funny!)
Andy Griffith
The Addams Family
among others.

About the Beaver, I enjoy in the ironic way most people who enjoy it these days do, but there's something about it I genuinely like.  When TV Land did their Leave it To Beaver marathon, I kept it running all day.  It was nice, kinda like Muzak!

"Gidget"...one of the few I can tolerate.  8)

No offense, but I find most '60's sitcoms too "gimmicky" ("Gilligan's Island", "Mister Ed", "Beverly Hillbillies", "The Flying Sally Field") and very sappy ("Ozzy & Harriett", "Leave It To Beaver", "Father Knows Best").

Younger, I used to watch reruns of "Green Acres", "Batman", and "Addams Family", but now I think they're corny.

Though a few like "Dick Van Dyke", "Bewitched" (The only "gimmicky" sitcoms I like), and "Laugh In" were funny and well written.
Though "Laugh In" was not a sitcom, but was funny.

"Laugh-In" was a groundbreaker, indeed! It was the "Saturday Night Live" of the 60's. So many shows like "Monty Python's Flying Circus","SNL","Fridays","Mad TV","In Living Color",and "The Kids in the Hall" owe their success to "Laugh-In". It paved the way for tv sketch comedy, and controversial political, and sexual satire.  :D Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Monty Python's Flying Circus is the greatest comedy series ever aired on television.  Nothing has ever come close to matching it!
:D :D :D

Without a doubt, The Monkees is my all-time favorite.  I love these guys.  I'd love to have both seasons on DVD, but I can't afford it yet.  For some reason, the credit card companies don't buy the excuse, "I couldn't send your payment because I had to buy the Monkees on DVD."  Ha!

I also like Gidget.  I wish it would've had more episodes, though.

I Dream of Jeannie was good, but only in the color episodes.

You bet your sweet bippy that Laugh-In was hysterical.

I should've been a child of the 60's.  All my friends thought I was strange for loving these shows, but you just can't beat good TV

I loved the Monkees, but I heard "Head" wasn't any good.  Not so you say?

Maxwell...I only recommend it if you are a Monkees fan,or a '60's pop culture buff. Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay, and him and Dennis Hopper make brief, silent cameos (did they wander off the set of "Easy Rider" and have lunch on the "Head" set? LOL!). The movie itself is confusing, and makes no sense, but it was deliberately written to be confusing, and nonsensical. It seems like a bad acid trip captured on film,as if one of the Monkees shot up with strong drugs, and later that night, had a long,90 minute psychadelic nightmare. I guess the Monkees themselves were sick of doing their weekly tv show, and made this film to show their fans what they really thought was an entertaining collection of sketches, and ideas, featuring their real personas. They even sing an amusing song during the opening credits about being forced to be "plastic" and they almost seem glad their tv show was cancelled. There is also a unique '60's feel to this film that I only felt when I watched other cult films of the same era ("Myra Breckinridge","Easy Rider",and "Performance".)  I guess that is why they called this movie, and other films of its ilk,"head" movies. They run several images and sounds through your head all at once, and even though you are confused and overwhelmed, when you first watch the movie, you can't help but think about the movie, off and on,for days on end. The film indeed does stay in your "head",for a long, long time. If you rent or purchase "Head",please tell me what you thought of it!  :DSincerely,Steve.

Maybe I'm strange, but I sort of like "Head."  Granted, it isn't like the series, but it is pretty good.  It says a lot about what was going on in the world at that time.  There is a lot of symbolism throughout the movie that deals with The Monkees and how they felt about their fame at the time.

The reason that it feels like a drug trip is because it sort of is.  The Monkees, Nicholson and James Frawley all sat around smoking pot and talking into a tape recorder.  From that session, "Head" was born.

From the 50s -
"You'll Never Get Rich" (aka Sergeant Bilko) with Phil Silvers.  At the end of every episode, they would come on with a pitch to send "Camels for Christmas", i.e., gift cartons of Camel cigarettes (the sponsor) to GIs - in VA hospitals!

Early/Mid-60s -
"Car 54, Where are You?"  - Fred Gwynne and Joe E. Ross. The former went on to the Munsters (which I also enjoyed), while the latter went on to an almost forgotten sitcom that I wish Nick at Nite would revive someday - "It's About Time", where he played a caveman named Gronk.  Imogene Coca played his wife.  The premise was, 2 astronauts go back in time.  The second season, the roles were reversed as the time-travelling astronauts return to the present - with the cave family in tow.

And does anyone besides me remember -
"Guestward Ho" - A young couple goes west to start a dude ranch, and almost every week get conned by a conniving Indian (they weren't Native Americans yet) played by J. Carroll Naish.

I Love Lucy
The Addams Family
Gilligan's Island
Beverly Hillbillies

Even though "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" isn't a sitcom, it was a really good comedy show. If you have digital cable, you can watch it on the TRIO channel.

Modified to add: By the way, I have video collections of "I Love Lucy" and "The Addams Family."
