Subject: the AMPEX VTR!!!

Written By: Tony S N Jr Fan on 02/22/04 at 11:41 p.m.

I think the invention from the 50's that STILL has a big impact on entertainment is the VIDEOTAPE RECORDER. This was invented by AMPEX Corporation and formally unveiled in 1956 at a broadcasters convention at the Conrad Hilton hotel in Chicago. Needless to say,the audience marveled at this wonder. When the demonstration was finished, the curtain was opened to reveal the huge machine and it's inventors. Needless to say, everyone asked questions about this incredible (for it's time) electronic wonder. The inventors were six guys-Alex Maxey,Shelby Henderson,Charles Ginsburg,Ray Dolby(later invented DOLBY noise reduction),Fred Pfost, and Charles Anderson. I have to wonder if they envisioned videotape being used by the ordinary average guy to tape shows off TV while at work or that same guy renting video movies for his VCR. Videotape recording has come a long way from that big VTR to the VHS machine on top of so many televisions worldwide.
