Subject: When did you get your first  COLOR TV?

Written By: Tony S N Jr Fan on 02/23/04 at 04:24 a.m.

When did you or your family get your first COLOR TV set? My family got an Admiral Color Console, with a 25-inch screen,in 1964. I was only 4 years old at the time, and I remember my mom calling me to our living room so I could see the NBC Peacock in "living color" for the first time! The cabinet on this thing was gorgeous, not the cheap plastic used for today's TVs. It was an Early American style cabinet to match the rest of our furniture.

Everyone is going to laugh when I say this...but we got our first color tv in 1977. :o I was 16 years old. My folks were so old fashioned. The only time I would get to see color tv, is when we would go to the barber shop. You can imagine my amazement.

In 1968- All my neighbors thought we were rich, but my dad saved all his overtime money for two years, to purchase it.
My dad could squeeze two pennies together and get a nickle in those days!  Quite the miser my old man was , being that there were 6 mouths to feed.

I remember Batman and Gilligan's Island were in color.
When the local news began in color, I can remember my mom
calling everyone to come home, to have a look! We got excited about stuff like that in the 60's.   ;D

The coolest thing when our family got our first COLOR set was seeing the NBC Peacock in full color for the first time!!

That was roughly when we got our first one, too. It may have been a few years earlier but it about the same time. We basically "inherited" it from my grandmother. She came to live with us and brought her color t.v. with her.  Then she moved out and left the t.v.

I think it was sometime around 1978 or 79.  I can remember coming home from school and seeing the van from the rental company driving up the road.  They'd just been to our house to deliver the set.

My grandparents had a colour set for years before we did so it wasn't a complete novelty.  Still exciting though because I was the first amongst my friends to get a colour set.

In the 60s, we had friends who had a color t.v. set. I would go over to their house JUST to watch t.v. They didn't mind because that is what they were doing anyway.

Actually I think we got our first color TV around 1957. However, all of the TV shows were still broadcast in Black & White, so the color TV didn't do us much good! ;D

NBC was broadcasting some of their shows in "LIVING COLOR" in 1957,btw,that's when the animated Peacock made it's debut, with a musical score by Lou Garisto and voice-over by Ben Grauer! The first Peacock, introduced in 1956,was a still drawing.I wish I had a picture of that old Admiral console TV,it was gorgeous! Why aren't consoles made anymore, asides from projection sets?

I wish I could find a website devoted to old television sets. The old consoles of the 50s and 60's worked well-some are still kept in working order-and their cabinet designs were gorgeous!

1975.

The first time I saw one was the same year, I went across the road to watch the neighbour's set.

I saw West Ham v Fulham in the 1975 F A Cup Final, and I turned the colour up as far as it would go, till the grass was flouro green !  ;D

I would guess about 1966. I don't remember being particularly impressed with the TV itself, but I had oodles of fun playing for months in the cardboard box where it sat out in our garage... ;D

I remember exactly the day when we got our first color TV....It was a 26" TV from Sears purchased on July 19,1969....My dad went out and got it because we all thought
the moon landing of Apollo 11 the next day would be in color..
I was 10 years old at the time.

Well, you may as well shove us in there too, Zella...!

Although colour broadcasting began here in 1967, the TV sets were considered a rich man's indulgence right up until the mid 70's!

Our first one was in 1974...a mighty Deccacolour in lush 'walnut' veneer! It was such a pride and joy (and it cost the old man a bomb!) that us kids weren't allowed near the thing without adult supervision!

Remote control? Luxury! You had to physically get out of the chair to change over! And the channel buttons were big, chunky, push-in affairs...which could only be successfully 'pressed' with the aid of a broom-handle! People with arthritis or rheumatism didn't stand a chance...!

Still didn't alter the fact that it was the same old tosh on TV!

As far as I remember, it lasted us 6 years before one of the colour 'guns' gave up completely, and we were watching everything in a shade of blue!

Yet our old black and white 'Ecko' set still kept going! My sisters and I loved it when Donny Osmond used to appear, because then you could turn the brightness down and see a pair of teeth floating over the screen...!

In the earliest memroies I have, we had a color TV - around the early 70's. My dad had a fairly good-paying job at that time which is probably how we had it. About the time my "toddlerhood" ended, he didn't have that job anymore, and after a while the TV gave out, so I spent a good deal of my childhood with a black-&-while TV.
Then about 1977 or 78, we got a color TV. We watched "Little Rascals" reruns at that time, and I remember dad telling us kids that even though we were getting a color TV, "Little Rascals" would still be black & white.
Why is it the weirdest memories get stuck in my brain?  ::)
