Yikes! Too many to list...

But a special mention to...

'The Great Pretender' - Platters ('56)

'Earth Angel' - Penguins ('54)

'Little Darlin'' - Diamonds ('57) (a textbook example of white boys covering RnB, but the original by The Gladiolas is flatter than the plastic it was pressed on...!)

'Come On-A My House' - Rosemary Clooney ('51) (a textbook example of how a harpsichord could've almost revolutionised 50's music...!)

'Rock Island Line' - Lonnie Donegan ('54) (unfairly categorised as a 'novelty' in most quarters - this was, nonetheless, extremely influential in getting youngsters to 'have a go' at making music...a certain John Lennon being one...)

Some good ones mentioned here already.

'Sh-boom'  - also by The Crew Cuts
'I wonder why' - Dion and The Bellmonts
'The Angel's listened in' - The Crests
'Silhouettes' - The Rays (better than Herman's Hermits or Cliff Richard's version)
'Don't you just know it' - Huey 'Piano' Smith

. . . The guilty pleasure is 'Baby Talk' by Jan and Dean.

'50s music?  ???

I thought all great music began around 1964 with The Beatles, so what do I know about '50s music? Very little.
But there are a few from that decade that I have always liked...

Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley
Not Fade Away - Buddy Holly
Sleep Walk - Santo & Johnny Farina
Why Do Fools Fall in Love? - Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers
Wonderful! Wonderful! - Johnny Mathis
I Put a Spell on You - Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Only six. And don't tell anyone my favorite might just be "Wonderful! Wonderful!"

;) ;D

The Platters - "The Great Pretender"
Tony Bennett - "Rags To Riches"

And two of my faves from Frank Sinatra:

"Strangers in the Night" and "Witchcraft"

See......you CAN do it. There WAS music in the 50s and earlier!  :)

Not only, but it's some of my favorite.  You know, every song on here is great, so I can only pile on as they occur to me...

Bing Crosby - Brother, Can You Spare a Dime.  It was before the 50s, but I've always liked his version.  That guy really had a set of pipes.
Duprees- You Belong to Me I think this one is a 60's song, but it's got a 50's feel.
Peggy Lee - Fever One of my favorites from the decade

There's one song from the late 50's I really like but I'm not sure of the artist or title. I think it may be called "The Game." Some of the lyrics go:

Many a teardrop will fall, but it's all...in the game
(Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...)

(Towards the end of the song:)
And he'll kiss...your lips
And caress your little fingertips
And your heart will fly...away
(Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo...)

(Hoog, do you know this one? ;))

I found a site that others may find interesting. It lists many songs that came out before 1960 and it looks like they all can be downloaded.

http://www.pcdon.com/page90.html

I got what I was looking for. There's a great '50s song I spent a long time looking for and I came across it on this site - "Anna" (1953) as sung by Silvana Mangano (and used in the movie "Cinema Paradiso" and "Anna").

Hi Jaytee, I'm looking for quite some time for an answer too, as this song was quite frequently on the radio in the Netherlands in the fifties when I was young, even searching the internet does not help me out so far, so as soon as I find who sang it I will tell you, I would be very obliged if you would do the same for me.
As a treat I can give you some more words of this song :
>Tell me a story, tell me a story tell me a story
>remember what you said. You promised me you said you
>would you gotta give in so I'll be good. Tell me a
>story and then I'll go to bed.
>Came home late one evening last July. Paid a little
>poker the time had passed me by. Shoes in my hand and
>my darlin was in bed, up the stairs saying a prayer
>and then a voice came through the air, "Hi ya there
>daddy remember what you said. tell me a story, tell me
>a story, tell me a story remember what you said. You
>promised me you said you would you gotta give in so
>I'll be good tell me a story and then I'll go to bed.
>Once upon a time I remember long ago. Don't go back in
>history your memories kinda slow. Stop your noisey
>talking tell I'm finished with my tale. Once upon,
>upon a what? upon you back you'll get a swat. Tell me
>about the fish you caugt that's bigger than a whale

"You Belong to Me" by The Duprees is from 1962. No offense, but I collect music of the '50s, '60s, '70s, early-'80s, and I always find out when the songs are from & what they charted & I feel that there is no "50's feel" because it all carried into the 60's (and not just the early 60's).

Not sure if our Dutch friend (see above) will return, but the version I know and love is a duet between Frankie Laine (the old fella) and Jimmy Boyd (the brat) - and for that little memory, you've gotta go waaaay back to the early fifties...!

Hey zcrito, You asked a vague question on one of the the most important subjects in a mans life!

Best songs belong to what girl he's with in the the back seat of his Chevy at the time! there could be to many to list for some guys. I have a few that turns back time for me after all these years...mostly Do Wop groups captured the moments for a life time of memories.

"The Wind" and a dozen more by the Jesters
"I Still Remember" and dozen more by Jackie & the Starlites
"Since I don't Have You" by the Tokens
"In the still of the Night"--"Valarie"
"One night with You" early Elvis (when he was cool)

I can go on and on...there's hundreds

Hi zcrito, I'm still getting use to how reply back to people, I hope this is the correct format.

Early Elvis lived from 1954 to 1957/8, he was the "one" who created a whole new culture, he dressed cool had cool hair, cool passive/aggressive attitude and sang his songs in a new cool way by shaken his body parts to the girls, driving them to orgasms. He started" it" all back then what it is"all" today. In 1959 he was drafted into the army for two years, and it ruined his cool image, something happened to the "Early Elvis" the leader of the post war teenage generation...he sold out to big business. He became that stupid puppet he sang to in one of his stupid ass movies he was pumping out every other month with the same stupid ass story line in every dumb ass movie he made...he sing some dumb ass song, then fight a heckling jerk then kiss some "goody two shoes" chick at the end...every movie he made sucked! and then the Las Vegas Elvis, need I say more on that ? He really died in 1961 but forgot to lay down until 1977, but the cool "Early Elvis" will always live on with us as long as "Rock n' Roll" lives on.

I had to jump in here. Yes, Elvis was the Coolest and what you are referring to is the "rebel" Elvis the pioneer, the trendsetter and the leader of the pack. However music changes and for an artist to remain he too must change. I agree post Army Elvis he wanted to be a movie star and the sad part is his movies made big bucks forcing him to listen to his (The Colonel) manager to take the easy money. Yes, most were corny and formulaic (as are most movies these days) I actually still like them for good clean family entertainment, there's an almost nostalgic innocense in them we've lost sadly. BUT, in 1968 Elvis regained his crown as the King when he poured more depth and heart and emotion into his songs his stage shows were magical. And like it or not in the 70's Elvis sold out every concert he had. Like the jumpsuits or not they were majestic back then and he wore them well. Musically he didn't get offered some of the songs that other artists got a shot at , partly for disco was in then and disco didn't suit his style and he was over protected by his manager who we found out years later had wronged Elvis a lot! Elvis evolved for three generations and some for the better some worse, through it all there has never been a better entertainer or vocalist who'd give you everything he had at every concert. He was the most loved artist in history and will always be. Having to choose between Coolest or the best? I'd take the best too.  Fav 50's song? There are too many to name- Almost any Elvis song will do.

TELL ME A STORY
(Terry Gilkyson)

Frankie Laine & Jim Boyd

Junior:
Tell me story, tell me story
Tell me story, remember what you said
You promised me you said you would
You got to give in so I'll be good
Tell me a story, then I'll go to bed

Father:
Oh, worry, worry, weary ends my day
Time to go home without my raise in pay
Home by the fire where a man can just relax
Sippers there by the chair, not a worry, not a care
Along comes Junior swinging his little axe

Junior:
Tell me a story, tell me a story
Tell me a story, remember what you said
Tell me about the birds and bees
How do you make a chicken sneeze
Tell me a story, then I'll go to bed

Father:
Came home so late one evening last July
Played a little poker the time had passed me by
Shoes in my hand and my darlin' wife in bed
Up the stairs sayin' a prayer
Then a voice comes through the air ....

Junior:
Hi you there, Daddy
Remember what you said

Tell me a story, tell me a story
Tell me a story, remember what you said
Tell me how your eye got black
Because the doorway hit you back
Tell me a story, then I'll go to bed

Father:
Once upon a time I remember long ago

Junior:
Don't go back in history
Your memory's kinda slow

Father:
Stop your noisy talkin'
Until I finish with my tale
Once upon a ...

Junior:
Upon a what ...

Father:
Upon your back you'll get a swat

Junior:
Tell me about the fish you caught
That's was bigger than a whale

Junior:
Tell me a story, tell me a story
Tell me a story, remember what you said
You promised me, you said you would
You gotta give in so I'll be good

Father:
Here's a tale you'll never forget
(Tap, tap, tap)

Junior:
Ouch
My tails all red

Father:
And now get up to bed

Junior:
Ha, ha come on Daddy
Tell me a story
Hee, hee

I have many favorites, but I'll just name a few:

Jimmy Dorsey - "So Rare"
The Andrews Sisters - "Rum And Coca-Cola"
The Platters - "The Great Pretender"
Tony Bennett - "Rags To Riches"

And two of my faves from Frank Sinatra:

"Strangers in the Night" and "Witchcraft"

"Strangers in the Night" was #1 in 1966.

I'll just go ahead and include most of the "American Graffiti" Soundtrack. 8)

Ok, I made a mistake -- disregard the 2nd-to-last post I made...the last post I made is the correct one.

Actually the original version of "You Belong To Me" is a pre-rock 'n' roll era tune from a woman singer named, Jo Stafford.  I actually do favor Jo's version over the Duprees version and have it on CD (I actually have both versions of the song on CD).  Jo had a wonderful voice, that was very rarely heard.  I do believe Jo's version of "You Belong To Me" is from 1950.  Okay to correct myself, Jo's version of "You Belong To Me" is from 1952.  For those who want to get a great introduction to pre-rock 'n' roll era music, this is the song to find or at least this version of it.

And to add to some of the songs from the pre-rock 'n' roll 1950's (1950 to 1955; the later of those years being the year when "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets was a #1 tune in the summer of that year, that was a great 1950's tune as well)  songs that I like a lot (my mom and dad actually were a young married couple during that time period so that's how I know a lot of these tunes):

"Come On My-A House" & "Hey There" by Rosemary Clooney (actor George Clooney's aunt)
"Music, Music, Music" by Teresa Brewer
"Singin' In The Rain" by Gene Kelly or Debbie Reynolds
"Come On Everybody Get Happy" by Judy Garland  (I often forget the movie this is from, but great Garland tune)
"Diamonds Are Girls Best Friend" by Marilyn Monroe (from the film, "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes")
"Mona Lisa" & "Unforgettable" by Nat "King" Cole
"How High The Moon" & "Vaya Con Dios" by Les Paul & Mary Ford
"Some Enchanted Evening" by Ezio Pinza (the original was released in 1949, when the Broadway musical, "South Pacific" started it's long run)
"Cry" by Johnnie Ray & the Four Lads
"Fever" by Peggy Lee (this might be after 1955, I sometimes get confused on this songs date)
"Song From Moulin Ridge (Where Is Your Heart)" by Percy Faith
"Three Coins In The Fountain" by the Four Aces
"Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt
"Wheel Of Fortune" by Kay Starr (no this has nothing to do with the game show with Vanna and Pat)
"Tennessee Waltz" by Patti Page
"That's Amore" by Dean Martin
"Goodnight Irene" by Gordon Jenkins, His Orchestra & The Weavers
"Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" by The Weavers

And for good measure  :D, let me do another listing of songs from 1955 and after to the end of 1959 that I favor and like to listen to a great deal (but too bad and makes me mad that the Atlanta area has gotten rid of it's oldies station  >:():

Again, "Rock Around The Clock"
"Only You", "My Prayer", "Twilight Time", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "The Great Pretender" by the Platters (but actually "Smoke" goes back to the 1930's)
"Splish, Splash" & "Dream Lover" by Bobby Darin
"Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin (this goes back further in time than does the Platters' "Smoke", since this is from "The Three Penny Opera")
"Witch Doctor" by David Seville
"Tequila" by the Champs
"Diana" & "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" by Paul Anka
"That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", "Everyday" by Buddy Holly or the Crickets (?)
"Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" by Frankie Lyman & the Teenagers
"The Wayward Wind" by Gogi Grant
"Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" by the Four Aces
"Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny
"Teen Beat" by Sandy Nelson
"There Goes My Baby" by the Drifters
"Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison
"Stagger Lee" & "Personality" by Lloyd Price
"It's All In The Game" by Tommy Edwards
"I Could Have Danced All Night", "Show Me" & "Without You" by Julie Andrews (from the greatest Broadway musical ever, "My Fair Lady")
"Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White" by Perez Prado
"Unchained Melody" by Les Baxter
"Yellow Rose Of Texas" by Mitch Miller
"Ain't That A Shame" by Fats Domino
"At Last" by Etta James
"Dance With Me Henry" by Georgia Gibbs
"Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard
"Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" & "Catch A Falling Star" by Perry Como
"All Shook Up", "Don't Be Cruel" & "Hound Dog" by Elvis Presley
"Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)" by Doris Day
"The Green Door" by Jim Lowe
"Party Doll" by Buddy Knox
"Love Letters In The Sand" by Pat Boone
"Bye Bye Love", "Bird Dog", "Wake Up Little Susie" & "All Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers
"Chances Are", "Twelfth Of Never", "Wonderful, Wonderful" & "Misty" by Johnny Mathis
"You Send Me" by Sam Cooke
"Take Five" by Dave Brubeck

Just a little tid bit -

Dave Brubeck is from my area. He was born on Salvio St. in Concord, Ca and he's probably one of this area's most famous natives.

That's really cool!  8)  Have you ever met him?  If you do so, tell him he has a fan here in Atlanta, GA.

I also loved listening to Mum's Black & White Minstrel records.  I just loved all of those old songs!  In particular I loved John Boulter singing the "Donkey Serenade" and "September Song" - he had a wonderful voice.

Good voices, good songs, but you'll never get it past the 'PC' brigade today!

I've still got two of their LPs...amazingly, they were among the first big selling LPs by a British act, both of 'em shifting over 100,000 copies apiece (which was unheard of in Britain at the time!)

The Ying Tong Song by The Goons

Groundbreaking!

And also another British 'first'...the flip side, 'Bloodnok's Rock 'n' Roll Call' was the first 'British' song with 'Rock 'n' Roll' in it's title to chart...

Some quite wonderful songs and artists there...everyone seems to 'forget' that there was some cracking stuff before 'rock' hit...

For the record, 'Fever' was from 1958, Peggy actually bettering Little Willie John's original, IMO...

I have always liked "No Particular Place To Go" by Chuck Berry

Love the lines :

All the way home I held a grudge
With a safety belt that wouldn't budge

I'm sorry, but "No Particular Place to Go" by Chuck Berry is from 1964 (peaked at #10 that year).
