Subject: Bossa nova

Written By: AL-B on 06/08/04 at 8:56 pm

Can anyone here steer me towards some good bossa nova? I think it's some really cool music but I wouldn't know where to begin. About the only thing that comes to mind is Stan Getz.

That's who I was going to recommend. You can also try João Gilberto.  Not too sure if it is bassa nova or not but the one tune that I love is called Manha De Carnaval. It can be found on the Black Orpheus soundtrack. Paul Desmond also did a randition of it. GREAT tune-very haunting.

This looks a pretty good bet for the uninitiated, AL-B...

I don't have it myself, but have got most of the tracks on other CDs...great stuff...

Check out Astrud Gilberto - she did the vocals on Girl from Impanema (w/ Getz) and has a bunch of bossa nova songs.

Never really cared for the tune "Girl from Impanema" but that is personal taste. I did notice that the CD that Paul recommended has "Manha De Carnaval" on it.

Didn't Dave Brubeck have a bossa nova album, too...?

And typically, that's one of the few I haven't got!

A quick 'search' for that is required...if it's good enough for Cat...

Bassa Nova is really cool.  In addition to Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, and her ex Joao, there is Carlos Antoino Jobim and many others.  Verve records released a bunch of LP's (you remenber what they are right?) back in the 60's when this was hot, and it has had its influence.  Great music, and the fact that U.S.ians like Paul Desmond were able to pick it up shows how international music can be.

It tends to veer toward the percussion side of things, Howard...to really break it down simply, the style is a mix of Brazilian Samba rhythms with modern Jazz...

That said, the actual instrument line-up is quite basic...either acoustic or electric guitars and basses, keyboards, drums and a trumpet or sax thrown in...

What years was Bossa Nova recognized in?

I think it had its origins in the late-50's, but as Don Carlos rightly says, it became phenomenally successful in the 60's (early half mostly...)

There was a song called 'Soul Bossa nova' by Quincy Jones. It has featured on Austin Powers and was sampled in the very early 90s by The Dream Warriors and they called it 'My definition of a boombastic jazz style' - It's all great.  :)
