Subject: Let's go to the Drive-In Movies!

Written By: gemini61 on 06/25/04 at 6:08 pm

Wouldn't it be cool if you could still go to the drive-in? I remember going all the time as a kid, and it wasn't even so much that the movies were even that good or that you could really hear them. But I think it was just the whole "experience" of being there. Does anyone still have a drive in where you live and do you still go? There's no way it could be the same as it was. Just wondering!! :)

Drive-Ins were my life.  From 1974 to 1984 my family owned several so I went at least 6 times a week. From the age of 10 I was working most nights of the week at them.
I miss the atmosphere of them.  The big dating scene, the little kids in pyjamas, the great burgers (my dads were famous !!), two movies, music at intermission.

We closed our last one in.1984 as videos took over to such an extent that our state went from having something like 55 drive-ins to just 3.  I still own the block of land - it has sheep on it at the moment !

I have posted this link some time ago - but will share again - its the old program sheets my dad and I use to make for advertising.

http://libranmonkey.homestead.com/DriveIn.html  it will take a while to load as they are A4 sized pics.  But its fun to relook at what we use to show.

The last drive-in theater in Lincoln closed down in 1989. I haven't been to a drive-in movie since then, but there is a drive-in theater about 60 miles away, maybe I'll have to go there one of these weekends.
I have an idea on how they can bring back drive-in theaters and still make them cost-effective year-round in colder climates. It's simple. They can combine a drive-in theater with an IMAX theater. An IMAX screen is about 70 feet tall, and so the building is even taller. They could build an IMAX theater, paint the back outside wall of the building white, and then attach a drive-in lot complete with speakers and a projection room/snack bar building behind the IMAX theater. And even when the seasons change and the drive-in has to shut down for the winter, the IMAX theater inside can still stay open year-round. (I even have a name: "The Four Seasons IMAX/Drive-In.")

Ah yes, the drive-in. That was the place where I was first "french" kissed. My sister was "chaperoning" my boyfriend and me and went to see "Grease". She went to the snack and that was when he gave me my first "real" kiss. Oh the memories.

My mother told me this story of her uncle who owned a motel. The motel was located next to a drive-in and you can watch the movies from the rooms. He managed to pipe in the sound. Cable movies before cable was invented.  ;)

I found out that my state has the totally of 4 drive-ins. There are all quite a distance from here so we haven't gone.

I live less than a mile from one.  We do go occasionally...it is much cheaper than theaters.  I can get in for $6 and my daughter is free...plus you can bring your own food.

We still have 2 drive in's where I live. They have really changed since the 60's and 70's. The lot is all blacktop, no more hills, there's no more speaker poles(sound is broadcast over your fm car radio), food from the snackbar still sucks tho'. My first movie at the drive in was a Disney movie called "Gus".

I'm sure there were probably other "firsts" at the drive-ins too!! ;)Actually one of the Drive-ins in this area played X-rated movies, I don't know how they got away with that, I'm sure it was probably visible from the nearby road. But it, and all the others I went to are all gone now.

I used to love going to the drive-in with my folks.  Unfortunately, our local drive-in has been gone for almost two decades.  But, there's a really nice two screen drive-in about an hour from me that's extremely popular.

I loved the Drive-in...my parents used to take us kids (in our jammies) to the drive-in...I remember seeing Liz and Dick, (Taylor, and Burton...for some reason it turns from Dick, to dip, when I post :D heehee...woe to the nicknamed Richards in the group ;D) in "Cleopatra"...then as a teen I saw "Woodstock" with a couple of carloads of friends...that was back in the great state of Maine, where my family still lives...
and when our kids were little we would take them to the drive-ins in Washington state, where we lived till 1997...we live in Montana now, and there is a drive-in about 30 miles away that my kids and I go to once in a while...saw both Spidermen movies there...and a few other...It is a great form of family entertainment, that gets you out of the house!
Geez I feel lucky...seems like I have never been without a drive-in close by for my 50 years on this planet...I hate to see the end of that institution. :\'(

Back in my hometown, there is a drivein Kane Road Drive In that has been in business for 50 years.

It has a 3-bedroom apartment built into it.  The owners live there, inside the screen.  So cool.  8)

When we owned the Wongan Hills drive in - it was out in the wheatbelt several hours drive from Perth.  We had a caravan parked under the screen and thats where we lived each Friday and Saturday night from 79 - 84.  We would get picked up from school on Fridays, do our homework in the car on the drive up, set the kiosk and everything up, open Friday and Saturday nights, then drive home before dawn on Sundays.  Every weekend for those years.

There is a drive-in in my area.  They have two screens and show 2 different movies on each screen.  I think the cost is $7 for a car load.  It's been almost 10 years since I've been to the drive in.  The good thing about the drive in, you don't have to listen to people behind you talking, like in the theater.  I think this drive-in will be around for a while longer.  EVery Friday and Saturdays cars are lined up for miles just to get in.

We still have a drive-in about 12 miles from here. The coolest I remember from the drivein was seeing Bullitt with Steve McQueen. During the chase scene you could see most of the stop lights in the lot come on at certain times. Nothing like living a movie. I was in my 68 camaro and about beat it to death during the chase.

The two I remember in Atlanta: 1st one, the Piedmont Drive-in, went from drive-in to a Wal-mart like store, now it's a rapid transit subway station and parking lot.  2nd one, the North 85 went from drive-in to outdoor flea market, now it's a multi-plex cinema with a bunch of theatres.

Well at about 17 1/2 it was sold and turned into a scrapyard :(, my teenage dreams were shattered and I never got to go :(.

Ah, a topic near to my heart! The Starlite Drive in in my hometown holds many memories for me.  The drama from sneaking "broke" friends in my trunk past the dimly lit booth of the old woman as if she were the cryptkeeper to the challenge of finding the perfect parking angle spot to the freedom and wonder of getting out on the hood with a blanket to better feel the atmosphere of the stars to the exciting adolescent exploration of the sexual possibilties in a risky surrounding to the realization that those  B movie double features usually weren't any good but they didn't get in the way of our night out and we still enjoyed going there again and again anyway. The Hells Angels movies and (Anyone Remember -"Confessions of a photographer" doubled with "Confessions of a window washer" ?) low budget semi-porn films ruled when I was going to the drive ins and horror double features known as "Creature features". Even today I have a weakness for some of those "bad' films because I saw them at the Drive in. I think I may even have a collection of those metal window hanging speakers somewhere in my garage today that somehow got forgotten and disconnected. By the way, go to Drive -In search engine on the internet and there's a list of all actively operating ones there. The closest Drive-ins to me still in operation are off I-85 in Atlanta they have 2 or 3 in one complex. 1 in Maryville, Tennessee that I watched be closed for years and recently ressurected. I deeply feel IF this nostalgic idea were handled properly Drive-Ins would make a huge comeback, financially and in popularity. Are $$$ investors listeneing? I for one would go to the Drive-in and hope the movie wasn't any good so it wouldn't interfere with my night out.

You must have gone to Chamblee or Henderson High if you ran around that area out by the Starlite.  I went to Grady and hardly ever went out I-85 before about the 1970s.  Remote unknown area out there as I recall until you got to Gainesville or Monroe.

Last week my brothers came down to visit me and we went to a drive-in theater (the I-70 Drive-In in Kansas City, Mo). It was the first time any of us had gone to a drive-in movie in since at least 1989 (that was the year the last drive-in closed in Lincoln, NE--my hometown). And it was really cool. I'm looking forward to going to more drive-in movies there.

Here's a website that has a list of drive-in theaters that are still open--maybe there's one within a couple of hours where you live.

                                                    http://www.driveintheater.com/index.htm

As far as our drive-in experience went, it was cool. We snuck some beer in (I even got some Hamm's--which I thought was defunct--to add to the retro experience. ;D) We saw the "Amityville Horror" remake (which I though was just OK), and "Sin City," which was AWESOME (although I'd like to see it again in a conventional theater so I can experience its full visual impact, which was somewhat diluted by the ambient light outside).
Two things happened that really added to the experience. First, when we pulled into our spot, we could smell the warm, musky aroma of a j wafting out of the station wagon next to us. My bros and I got a good laugh out of that. Then later on, about halfway through the second movie, an old Ford Crown Vic pulled in the spot next to us and the trunk popped open. This rather petite girl, who looked about 17 and was driving the car, walked to the back of the car, raised the trunk up, and proceeded to help two rather large teenage boys out of the trunk. They were wedged in there pretty tightly and had a hard time getting out. Once they had freed themselves, me and my brothers busted out laughing and gave them a thumbs up. We all thought it was cool that even in this day and age, there are still kids sneaking into drive-ins.

That link is where I got my pic, thanks though. Did they have speakers or was it one of those where you tune your radio to a certain station? Last time I went to ours, (before they tore it down), they had gotten rid of the speakers and had a station you had to tune in on your car radio to hear the movie. The whole drive-in experience was what made people keep going back, even though it was hard to hear the movie and you probably didn't watch it much anyway, it was just cool to go to the drive-in.  :)

We still have quite a few here in Indiana. I remember when I was about 4 or 5 we lived next to the Clermont Drive-in. My brother and I would lay on a Large dresser in our bedroom and watch movies all night. Our mother would then spend most of the following morning trying to roust us out of bed. I remember watching the "Batman" movie when it was released. If it wasn't too cold or raining we could open our window and hear the sound from the theatre speakers.
