Subject: Brit movies

Written By: danootaandme on 07/08/04 at 3:51 pm

I am a big fan of Brit movies.  I mentioned Georgie Girl in another thread.  A couple of
others are "A Taste of Honey", "The Lonliness of the Long Distance Runner'(both Tony
Richardson) and "Hard Days Night", "Help", "The Knack(and How to Get It). (Richard
Lester), "Sapphire", let me think of more.  I love black and white movies.

Brit films seem to be very different to American films. I'll rattle off a few for you (some are great and some I'm not too sure of).

Look back in anger
The Servant
Goodbye Mr Chips
Kes
Shirley Valentine
Quadrophonia
The Carry on films (Carry on Doctor, Carry on up the Kyber etc)
The 'Doctor in' series (Doctor in love, Doctor in Clover etc)
The Elephant Man
I'm alright Jack
Private's Progress

And now for something completely different  ;)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Life of Brian (and several other Monty Python movies)
Tom Jones (the orginial with Albert Finney was much better then the remake)
Dr. Doolittle
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (even though it did have Mr. Van Dyke (I know the censor doesn't like his name ;))

There were a few Disney movies that I think were british (at least it had british actors in it)
Mary Poppins (also with Mr. Van Dyke)
The Three Lives of Tomasina

Hey Bobby, you mentioned Shirley Valentine. My dad once said that that was a movie I should watch and to this day, I still haven't. But, I would like to.

How about British comedies?

I used to watch:
Butterflies
Goode Neighbors
Mind Your Language (the U.S. tried to redo this show called "What a Country"-it sucked-the British one was so much better)
Benny Hill
Keeping up Apperences
(And of course) Monty Python

My favorite Brit movies from all decades have always been...

'60s
Alfie
A Man for All Seasons
Seance on a Wet Afternoon
Becket
'70s
Barry Lyndon
'80s
A Fish Called Wanda
Distant Voices, Still Lives
'50s
The Lavender Hill Mob
'40s
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The Red Shoes
Black Narcissus
Great Expectations

I haven't seen some of the great movies mentioned in the other posts but I will eventually.

:) ;)

Hey Bobby, you mentioned Shirley Valentine. My dad once said that that was a movie I should watch and to this day, I still haven't. But, I would like to.

I have seen it and it is alright. It's like a lot of British films, it's a film based on people ground in reality who want to improve their lives - like Educating Rita which is a wonderful film (mainly for Michael Caine).

How about British comedies?

I used to watch:
Butterflies
I barely watched this. I do know it starred a very young Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney you Plonker!)
Goode Neighbors
I don't know this one.
Mind Your Language (the U.S. tried to redo this show called "What a Country"-it sucked-the British one was so much better)
British TV spawned tons of non PC sitcoms. This was one of them. I don't know much about this one but I know the series are out on DVD.
Benny Hill
Why did they take this man off the air? Very funny comedian.
Keeping up Apperences
I didn't like this that much. The farce seemed to have been laid thick with a trowel. Patricia Routledge (Hyacinth) is a good actress though and has been in various things. I'm surprised anyone beyond Britain has heard of this one.
(And of course) Monty Python
A trendsetter in British comedy. Very hip for the day and still has a major cult following. Surprising really, because the show could very well have been a non-success due to it's lack of a linear plot line.

Keeping Up Appearances is well known here.  It was my daughter's favourite show for ages.

Other English comedies which are classics are:

Fawlty Towers (still cracks me up every time I watch it)
Porridge
Up Pompeii
To The Manor Born
The Two Ronnies

You'll find that most English comedies are very popular in Australia. :)

Up Pompeii!?! Unbelievable - Salute!  ;D

For me, Porridge and Fawlty Towers are absolute classics. The comedy is so pure and barely a scene is wasted in each episode.  :D

If we're talking about Brit tele shows now there are only two that I remember and liked very much

Yes, Minister
and
Kelly Monteith (Seinfeld must have copied from this one) ???
The A&E channel used to show them in the mid '80s. They were two of my favorite television shows at the time.

And maybe on a good day
The Avengers
and
Are You Being Served?

:) ;D

Bobby, I get the horrible feeling (given the E on the end of Goode) that the American TV Execs felt the need to change the tile of "The Good Life"  :( ::) >:(

That excellent show with Richard Briers, Felicity Kendall, Paul Eddington & Penelope Keith.  :)

It seems to coincidental to me  :o

How could I have forgotten those ... especially Steptoe.  It was one of my favourites as a child!  I've just remember another one - On The Buses - which starred Reg Varney.

Ah! Felicity...she of the perfect rear-end...!!

Ahem!

Going back to the films, worth a mention is the genteel 'Genevive' (1953) about the London to Brighton car run...worth seeing just to howl at the accents which would have put a plummy BBC voice to shame...(did every British person talk 'laike thet' in the 50s?!!)

At the other end of the scale, 'The Long Good Friday' (1979 - which made a star out of Bob 'Oskins), still stands up well as a powerful insight into gangland...

Reg Varney...there's a name from the past! He is still with us, living somewhere in the South-West...and there were also a couple of obligatory film versions of this show at the time...

I like mostly all British film. No one has mentioned a film called "sweetie" which I thought was really great , circa 1990's. I love almost all British TV and film. :)

The Vicar of Dibley is one of my somewhat current favorites.
"The Prisoner", Patrick Mcgoohan opus, that is a good one.
"Alfie" never gets old, Michael Caine is one of my fave raves.

I love the Vicar Of Dibley.  Dawn French is a favourite.
I think Michael Caine is a terrific actor.  I loved him in "Little Voice".  That was a wonderful movie.  The English are also responsible for some of the best mini-series too.  The "Singing Detective", "Lipstick On Your Collar", "Blot On The Landscape" and "The Sharp End" are just a few that spring to mind.
