Well, Claire - you couldn't have a finer start than Bobby Goldsboro's 'Honey', tho' to a lot of people, it's a bit hard to swallow...!

There's probably plenty of others, but one that I remember vividly was a rather oddball (some would say bad taste) effort called 'The Deal' by Pat Campbell...

Blimey! There's two people in the world that's got this record?!!

In a similar vein (you'll know what I mean...) you could also try 'Five Little Fingers' by Frankie McBride and 'It's You' by British slapstick comedian Freddie Starr (in serious mode...)

And, lest I forget the daddy of 'em all, 'Old Shep' by Red Foley/Elvis Presley...

If any more crop up in my brainbox, I'll let you know...

Well, no need to be dubious - because he does play it 'straight', if slightly overblown...good luck with finding that one, it's a bit obscure...

I always thought "At Seventeen" was so depressing. There's a ton of sad songs from the 60s and 70s -I'm surprized that there hasn't been more response to this.

Try picking the collective brains on http://www.oldiesmusic.com/bbs/ (Marian will be very familiar with it...!!) - there's some very knowledgable people there, but careful with the 'Laurie' question - it's one of the most asked questions on there...!!

Marian, you're right on that, I forgot he drowned also. Really, the only thing I liked about the song was drums and the guys who sang the "humba chukka humba chukka" back ground on it.

Do remember a song that was about a father telling his son" please don't go down by the Indians or something like that ? because he was afraid his son would find a girl down there and fall in love with her only to find out that maybe the girl could be his sister because of a love affair the father had with an Indian girl and had a baby with then left them both and kept it a secret...Does this sound familiar to you? do you know the title or who sang that screwed up song?

Yes Patches by Clarence Carter is correct written by Gen. Johnson of Chairmen of the Board of "Give Me Just A Little More Time" fame. But don't forget the other "Patches" by Dickie Lee. Now that's really a sad song.  Later, sherman]

I remember all of those.  Just recently got a CD that has Billy Don't Be a Hero.
What about Seasons in the Sun and one I only heard once but will never forget called Angels, Roses, and Rain.  It's about a man and a little girl, the mom died and he tells her "So, darlin' when you hear your mama's name think of angels, roses, and rain.
Also, there's one I think the name of it is I Need Somebody to Talk To, (maybe I Just Need Somebody to Talk To) it's about a little girl who lives in an orphanage.

Angelo by (I think) Brotherhood Of Man???

It goes something like:

Running away together
Running away forever
Angelo

Running from every stranger
Hiding from every danger
Angelo

The song is about lovers who cant be together because they are from two different classes. She is rich, upper class and he is poor and (from the way he is discribed in the song) peasant class.

Also, Hello, This Is Joannie by Paul Evans(?) is also known as The Telephone Answering Machine Song.

I love seeing old threads get bumped, especially since I didn't get to partake when they first came out.

Last Song - Edward Bear

the lyrics are very sad. I remember seeing Edward Bear perform this song live while me and my friends were peaking on #$%#
that pretty much changed this pop one hit wonder sad song into a psychedelic experience at the time  :D  who would have thunk it?

Last Song is agreeably not a psychedelic song, but due to circumstances and environmental changes and mind alteration, it became one that one night.  Harry Chapin has some good videos on Youtube, especially Taxi

included are:  Sad Song
                    Poems and Prayers and Promises
                    I'm Sorry

Then if you want to call it sad: Paul Revere- Cherokee Nation....(singing of the plight of the Cherokee tribe)

Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again Naturally

Jim Croce- Operator

not sure of the lirttle girl who read/recorded it in the 70's,(for some reason I remember a name of Paula Webb- but may be wayy off) it was a sweet tear jerker, but it was- a Letter to God.

Little Anthony? Tears On my Pillow(or was that the 50's?)

Cryin- Roy Orbison

I don't believe anyone mentioned Shannon,by Henry Gross, from the 70's about a man who lost his best friend, his dog, to the sea.....Mandy by barry manilow was rumored to also be about man's best friend....Once you understand, by Think in the 50's, is sad because these parents are so strict on the fundamentals of raising their kids they drive them away into another direction.......and one dies of an overdose.  Good song in any time period.

Perhaps the soldier one is "One Tin Soldier?"
It's a really cool song.. I think the band was called Original Caste..and it is a girl singing (at least, I think its a girl!).

The chorus goes something like:

go ahead and cheat a neighbor..
go ahead and hate a friend..
do it in the name of heaven
you can justify it in the end
something..something..
can't remember..
and then
one tin soldier walks away.

Excellent song-one of my favorites.

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
