Robin Williams is a genius #1 with  Bill Cosby a close second and Richard Pryor even though trash mouthed was very funny. Larry the Cable Guy ain't too bad either.  Hey Tanya, long time - no debate.

Great list, Jamie.
If you ever get a chance check out a 1984 movie called "The Great Standups". It covers and shows clips of comedians like those and others going all the way back to the early '40s.

I like all of them on the list EXCEPT Lenny Bruce -- I think he's overrated. Never really cared for him.

And don't forget Dick Gregory. He was good too, and Woody Allen, and...

;D

Funniest thing I've seen in a long time, the Gap Girls:

Lucy.....Adam Sandler
Kristy.....David Spade
Boss.....Chris Farley
Missy.....Sara Gilbert
Tammy.....Rob Schneider

Oh S, if it has to be 70s I'll say Bud Cort and Paul Williams.

Out of the ones nominated, Bob Newhart no contest. Good, thoughtful, cerebral comedy. Plus he was my grandapa's favorite.  8)

I voted for Bill Cosby.  My parents had one of his records when I was a kid, and I'd get a real kick out of it.

Honorable mention: Redd Foxx

I'm glad someone else knows about it.

It's probably one of the funniest "movies" to come out in the '80s.

I LOVE some of Bill Cosby's stuff. "It's the Lord, Noah." "Right."  The one I like (I am abbreviating so I don't offend anyone but if you have heard it, you know what I am talking about.)  "No, I'm G.D. He's J.C."

Yeah, I think I remember the childbirth bit. "One, two, three, four...PUUUUUUUSHHH! PUUUUUUUSSHH!" :D

I also recommend some of Redd Foxx's albums. Before he became famous as Fred Sanford, he made a lot of "blue" comedy records back in the 50's. While tame by today's standards, they're still really funny.

My vote is for Bob Newhart.

Jamie, back in the 50's Ernie Kovacs was ahead of his time with his humor, I think he was best then.

Sandy Becker was always made me laugh too....Sandy WHO?...someone out there must remember his show.

Soupy Sales was the best in the 60's...with White Fang, Black Tooth and his others characters.

George Carlin and Rodney Dangerfield are and were the Masters of the trade and Cris Rock is getting up to their status if not there already.

That's my choice too! :D I'm surprised that none of them were on the list. And I loved D!ck Martin's quips, especially in scenes when he and Dan Rowan were talking in front of the curtain.

Good as the list is, I'm putting up two 'others'...

Spike Milligan (who, not a comedian per se, broke all known barriers of comedy...)

Tommy Cooper...for just being Tommy Cooper

We'll never see their like again...

Robin Williams is a comic genius, and he is my favorite. but bill cosby i voted for, because even in the modern day 20th century, he is one of the few that can get a crowd to laugh their pants off and still keep it clean. but i also think that jerry lewis should be added to the poll. he was absolutely great ;D

was Robin Williams around before the 70's? If Rowan & Martin were, I'd add Ruth Buzzi & Gilda Radner, very funny visual comics. Dean Martin was funny too. Jerry Lee Lewis, anyone? Out of this list had a tough time between George Carlin & Woody Allen. I think of Bill Cosby as a more modern comedian, he'd be way at the top of my list for all time favorites.
