Subject: Favorite Hollies song

Written By: redhead007 on 12/23/04 at 12:32 pm

Not sure if a poll about this group has already been done (didn't find anything in searching the forums), but if there hasn't, here's one now!  :) This group had so many good songs that it's hard to fit them all into a poll, but if I had to choose, it would have to be the ultra-cool Middle Eastern flavored song Stop, Stop, Stop, followed closely by Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress).

So which ones are your favorite(s)?  8)

Any one of these three would have been fine

Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)
The Air That I Breathe
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

I went with The Air That I Breathe.

:)

'King Midas' was the attempt by Graham Nash to push the group in a more 'progressive' direction - sadly, it flopped badly and caused Graham to leave the group soon after, when they reverted to MOR stuff...shame - good song...

My favourites...

'I'm Alive' - complete with masses of echo and reverb...t'riffic...

'The Day That Curly Billy Shot Crazy Sam McGee' - almost a sound-a-like of 'Long Cool Woman' but much better...sadly, not heard much...

Whilst here, I'd like to mention that Carl Wayne (The Hollies lead vocalist for the last few years after the departure of Allan Clarke), passed away earlier this year - he was also the original lead vocalist of fellow 60s group The Move - a very sad loss...

I voted for Long Dark Road, but on reflection I would have to go with 'other' and choose Magic Woman Touch (1973).

Paul, "Curly Billy" got a lot of airplay where I grew up - I bought the 45 back in '74 when it was out. It is a great song, and I agree, better than Long Cool Woman. (And it's slightly easier to understand the lyrics!) ;)

And a bit of trivia - "The Air that I Breathe" was penned by Albert Hammond of "It Never Rains in Southern California" fame.

Aye, fine one...very minor hit here (as was 'Long Cool Woman') - everyone mainly knows 'The Air That I Breathe' from that period...'Too Young To Be Married' was pretty good too...

Certainly was...and he recorded it before The Hollies got it - not that they had much of a job on their hands, his version was awful...!!

I love all of their songs equally, so I am going to pick other and vote for their 1981 hit "Hollidaze" which was a medley of their hits :)

I also really really liked their 1982 comeback hit "Stop! in the Name of Love"
