Subject: Favorite Gordon Lightfoot song, 60's only

Written By: gord on 02/27/05 at 8:12 am

I've listed some of his better known songs from just the 60's which was just before the release of 'If You Could Read My Mind' in 70 or 71, the song that launched him. If I missed  your favorite please list it. I really can't choose a favorite :)

Rather pitifully, I'm only au fait with 'Early Morning Rain' (although I am aware he'd been recording since the early 60s...)

But I'll certainly try and 'find' a few of those listed above...thank you...

Great songs, both these were pretty well into the 70's, I think Sundown was his highest song on the charts, I think not sure :)

I'm not too familiar with his early stuff...although my parents might be, since they like his music.

'Song for A Winter's Night' is most beautiful, but CRT is the most impressive.

Hi Gord,

Of the songs you have listed, I think maybe 'song for a winter's night' get's my nod, though I like others there, like Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I have 2 CD's of his: 'Gords Gold', & 'If you could read my mind'.

From what I remember, Gordon Lightfoot was highly revered back in the mid 70's around Chicago way, where I was living at the time. He sang about the 'Minstrel of the Dawn', one of my favourites, & for me he is that minstrel incarnate .. a genuine legend. I want to mention his other songs ... not only 60's.

He had one that I find extremely hard to sing along with and keep myself from crying as I do so .. this one buckles my 'stiff upper lip' a lot. The song? 'Too late for praying' . I think that song deserves special mention.  :\'( :\'( :\'(

He had a song called 'Beautiful' : I remember being romantic to a girl I was involved with, who physically I'd honestly have to say wasn't beautiful. Nevertheless, I cared for her a great deal, & by her side I looked her in the eye whilst that song was playing and sang those lyrics to her 'I'm telling you, you're beautiful'. Drat, this guy stirs up my melancholy emotions .. where's that box of hankies. :\'(

'If you could read my mind' is a moving song too, especially when you've played the part of the hero, & it's all gone horribly wrong.
'The hero often fails, & you wont' read that book again, because the endings just too hard to take ...... :\'(

I really like these a lot too: 'Carefree Highway', &  'Approaching Lavender'. 'Softly' is nice too.

When I saw Gordon Lightfoot was on the bill to appear in Canada at the recent 'Live 8' concert, I was very interested to find out what he looked like/sounded like now. I was able to watch it on the internet, albeit the size of a postage stamp on my slow connection. He was treated with awe by the crowd ... very enthusiastic they were  towards him. I wouldn't have recognised him though. He looks a fairly solid guy on 'Gord's Gold' ... although that was obviously around 30 years ago .... think he's about 70 now. So, his hair had receded/thinned a lot, & he looked quite gaunt to me. The voice and the guitar playing, however, were still quite remarkable. An artist that Canadians can be genuinely proud of.

THE WAY I FEEL from his FIRST ALBUM is one of my favourites!!

He ruined it on his second album... Made it faster and gross..... (I didnt think ppl did stupid stuff like this in the 60s)
