Subject: Weirdest song?

Dunno if it is 'wierd' or not, I grew up with my brother and sisters playing it non-stop, I heard it so much I can virtually play it back in my head in it's entirety....

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly  :) :) :) :)

Probably for someone unfamiliar with it it would be quite, errr,  strange......

This one just scrapes into the psych era...

'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)' - Beatles

...as the bare bones of it was originally recorded in 1967, but it wasn't actually completed until 1969. Lennon tried to release it as a single under the guise of the Plastic Ono Band, but the rest of The Beatles vetoed its release...

...until a year later when (for some reason) it surfaced on the back of 'Let It Be'...

Although not as avant-garde as the aforementioned 'Revolution #9' (what could be?), it's still very off-the-wall...

My name is Gísli and I'm from Iceland (if you don't know where it is then just look for it, it's in Europe:). I was just looking for "wierdest song" on Google and I ended op here. But if you're looking for something strange then you should listen to "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict" - Ummagumma - Pink Floyd

I really think it's funny when the man begins to gibber. It's just weird

Just heard on the radio, after all these years I still cannot catch the lyrics.
This part? "Wrapped (some say revved) up like a deuce, another runner in the night" One of the most misunderstood lyrics of all time.
Maybe you guys already knew this but this song is written by Bruce Springsteen.

Here are the full lyrics (sorry so long!!)...
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce
(fade out)
Madman drummers bummers Indians in the summer, With a teenage diplomat,
In the dumps with the mumps, As the adolescent pumps his way into his hat,
With a boulder on my shoulder, Feeling kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasin, sneezin' and wheezin, the calliope crashed to the ground.
(pickup) the calliope crashed to the ground
Cause she was blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce
(fade out)
Some silicon sister with a manager mister told me you got what it takes.
She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong play the song with the funky break.
And go cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather charts see if it was safe outside
Oh little early Pearly came by in his curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride.
(pickup)
asked me if I needed a ride
Cause she was blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce  Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light (chorus continues)
She got down but she never got tight gonna make it through the night
She's gonna make it through the night (break with the soul-stirring solo)
Momma always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun But momma that's where the fun is
(chop sticks variation) the calliope crashed to the ground.
Cause she was blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light Wrapped up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Blinded by the light (fade, mixed with next verse)
Madman drummers bummers Indians in the summer, With a teenage diplomat,
In the dumps with the mumps, As the adolescent pumps his way into his hat,
With a boulder on my shoulder, Feeling kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round

"Purple People Eater" from Sheb Wooley (probably one of the weirdest names for a solo artist), was from the 1950's (#1 in 1957); although I would say the weirdest song from the 1950's would have to be this #1 from 1958:  "Witch Doctor" by David Seville.  Well most anything from Seville was kind of weird, including the Chipmunks.  But the lyrics from "Witch Doctor" are so outlandish, to wit:

"Ooo-eee, Ooo-eee, Ooo-eee, Ooo-ah walla walla bing bang!" (And that's only some of it!)

"Alley-Oop!" both versions are from 1960.

One other one that is also outlandish from 1960 would have to be Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini".

As for the original psychedelic era there are two really odd songs that come to my mind, one is:

"Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)" by John Fred & his Playboy Band from 1968 (yes, this was taken from the Beatles' "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"), some of the lyrics in this song make absolutely no sense, but it is a fun song.

And much of the work Tommy Roe did in the late-1960's, "Sweet Pea", "Dizzy", etc. are pretty far fetched when you think about them.

Of course the most interesting song has to be 1969's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam.

Yes, that's it!  :D  Or should I say, I think she's got it!  I knew I had gotten it wrong, actually I'm glad I did.  (My noggin's hurtin' waaay too much this evening to have gotten those lyrics correct.)  ;D

Of the 1970's, I'd say the weirdest songs were, in no particular order: (1) "Spill The Wine" by Eric Burdon and War (1970); (2) "Stuck In The Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel (1973); and (3) "Rock On" by David Essex (1974).

But of all time, the weirdest song I've ever heard is "Your Woman" by White Town (1997).

OK, here are a few that come to mind, which all were made before the 1970's:

Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport    Rolf Harris
Hooray for Captain Spaulding      Groucho Marx (was the source of his theme song)
Lydia The Tattooed Lady          Groucho Marx (was also done by Ribin Williams in The Fisher King)
The Preacher And The Bear      Phil Harris
Der Fuehrer's Face                    Spike Jones & His City Slickers (taken from a Donald Duck short!)
The Martian Hop                      The Ran-Dells
Cover Of The Rolling Stone        Dr Hook & the Medicine Show (and yes, the song did get them on the cover!)

A bit of trivia here, "Rolling Stone" was written by the late great American poet Shel Silverstein.  He also wrote Boy Named Sue, Queen Of The Silver Dollar, Sahra Cynthia Sylvia Stout, and The Unicorn.

Trimac21, the weirdest songs came out of the 50's, I don't remember the exact titles or Artists but they sang songs about "I saw the Witch Doctor" ooo eee ooo ahah bing bang walla walla bing bang was the chorus and there's the song "Purple people eater" he was a 1 eyed 1 horn flying purple people eater! and "Ally Oop" and "I'm a yogi, a yogi baby"

I remember the song Yogi.  My mom had it on one of those "Hit Parade" 45s (they had 2-3 songs on each side of a 45).  I used to listen to that all the time as a kid, and I could still kill my ex for taking my 45 collection when we split up.

The song was sung by "Ivy Three", and it was the inspiration for "Yogi Bear".

I saw a Kook who was standing on his head
He flipped his lid like he should have been in bed
I said, what gives man
He looked at me and said
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Bo-bo

And then the cat started strutting on hot coals
He was wearing sneaks, but they were so full of holes
He sang right out from the bottom of his soles
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Bo-bo

Listen here, baby, the Yogi man said
It's all a matter of the mind
Just commune with your innermost being
Baby, you'll be just fine

He was hip, all right, wasn't he

Though I tried my best to dig my inner me
I walked on coals, my head below my knee
Until at last I heard him say perfectly
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby
I'm a Yogi, I'm a Yogi, baby

Hey, Bo-bo

Even more stranger, it got a British release - even though the cartoons weren't shown here at the time!

When I see M*A*S*H with Loudin Wainright III, I think of that song "Hooray for Capt. Spaulding" because that is his character's name, "Capt. Spaulding" and of course Loudin Wainright III also sang a strange song "Dead Skunk".

I also think of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" when talking about my sister-in-law. I think you can guess why.  ;)

Ahh, I take it you mean this song?

Crossing the Highway late last night
He should have looked left and he should have looked right
He didn't see the Station Wagon car,
the skunk got squashed and there you are
You've got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road, stinking to high heaven.
Take a wiff on me, that aint no rose
Roll up your window and hold your nose
You dont have to look and you dont have to see
'Cos you can feel it in your ol' factory
You've got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road,
and it's stinking to high heaven.
Yeah you've got your dead Cat and you've got your dead Dog
On a moonlight night you've got your dead Toad Frog
Got ya dead Rabbit and ya dead Racoon
The blood and the guts are gonna make you swoon
You've got your dead skunk........ in the middle
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road stinking to high heaven

Come on stink
You got it it's dead
It's in the middle, dead skunk in the middle
Dead skunk in the middle of the road stinking to high heaven
All over the road, technicolored
You've got delusions, it's dead, it's in the middle
And it's stinking to high high heaven

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"

Here are a few weird songs I have always loved:

Hot Rod Lincoln - Commander Cody
The Streak - Ray Stevens
My Girl Bill - Jim Stafford
The Thing - Phil Harris
England Swings - Roger Miller
Whistle Stop - Roger Miller (which was sampled to become "The Hampster Dance")
Bike - Pink Floyd
The Lords Prayer - Sister Janet Mead
Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is A Season) - The Byrds

I picked ones that are not nessicarily "Novelty Songs", but also had some serious airplay for their time.  Hot Rod Lincoln is still connonly played on "Classic Rock" stations.  The Streak was a novelty, but it came at the height of the "Streaking" fad.  My GIrl Bill was popular with it's juxtoposition and making people think "outside the box".

The Thing was very popular, from one of the greats from the "Golden Age Of Radio".  "England Swings" was rather unusual, comming from somebody mostly known for US Country music.  "Whistle Stop" was mostly known at the time for being the theme to "Robin Hood", and was remade decades later a "The Hampster Dance".  "Bike" was a classic example of what happens when you take to much LSD.

"The Lords Prayer" was an example of what happens when you take the Bible and try to turn it into a Pop Song.  The Byrds did the same thing when they took some lines from Book of Ecclesiastes, and turned it into "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is A Season)".  The early 1970's saw a big resurgence in Christianity (and spirituality in general), and a lot of songs tried to play off of that.  Even George Harrison made "My Sweet Lord" in this era.

IN THE LATE 50'S THERE WERE ALOT OF WEIRD OR DUMB DUMB RECORDS THAT MADE THE TOP 10 HIT LISTS, ALTHOUGH I LIKED THEM ALL. SONGS ABOUT SPACE ALIENS, JUNGLE SAFARI'S, CAVEMEN, INDIAN LOVERS AND WESTERN MOVIES, CARTOON'S YOGI BEAR, AND EVEN A SONG ABOUT LITTLE NASH RAMBLER CAR AND A BIG CADILLAC. THEY ALL HAD THEIR FANS FOR THOSE SONGS AND WHEN THROWN INTO THE MIX OF ROCK AND ROLL, COUNTRY ROCK A BILLY AND EARLY SOUL THEY WERE A WELCOMED COMEDY RELIEF AND STILL ARE COOL TO LISTEN TO TODAY.

I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT IN THE EARLY/MID 60'S, ROGER MILLER ALWAYS MADE STRANGE SONGS WITH WEIRD LYRICS, AND LIKED ALL OF THEM AND STILL HAVE A COUPLE HIS LP'S THAT I PUT ON WHEN THE MOOD HITS....CHUG-A-LUG CHUG-A-LUG

"Black Angel's Death Song" by Velvet Underground and Nico is an odd one. Here's some of the lyrics:

The myriad choices of his fate
Set themselves out upon a plate
For him to choose
What had he to lose
Not a ghost bloodied country
All covered with sleep
Where the black angel did weep
Not an old city street in the east
Gone to choose
And wandering's brother
Walked on through the night
With his hair in his face
On a long splintered cut from the knife of G.T.
The rally man's patter ran on through the dawn
Until we said so long
To his skull-shrill yell
Shining brightly red-rimmed and
Red-lined with the time
Infused with the choice of the mind
On ice skates scraping chunks
From the bells
Cut mouth bleeding razor's
Forgetting the pain
Antiseptic remains cool goodbye
So you fly
To the cozy brown snow of the east
Gone to choose, choose again
Sacrificials remains make it hard to forget
Where you come from
The stools of your eyes
Serve to realize fame, choose again
And roverman's refrain of the sacrilege recluse
For the loss of a horse
Went the bowels and a tail of a rat
Come again, choose to go
And if Epiphany's terror reduced you to shame
Have your head bobbed and weaved
Choose a side to be on
If the stone glances off
Split didactics in two
Leave the colors of the mouse trails
Don't scream, try between
If you choose, if you choose, try to lose
For the loss of remain come and start
Start the game I che che che che I
Che che ka tak koh
Choose to choose
Choose to choose, choose to go

Went the bowels and a tail of a rat
Come again, choose to go
And if Epiphany's terror reduced you to shame
Have your head bobbed and weaved
Choose a side to be on
If the stone glances off
Split didactics in two
Leave the colors of the mouse trails
Don't scream, try between
If you choose, if you choose, try to lose
For the loss of remain come and start
Start the game I che che che che I
Che che ka tak koh
Choose to choose
Choose to choose, choose to go

Oh yeah, sometimes it seemed Lou Reed and Co's lyrics were weird just for the sake of it. Nonetheless, I really love the Black Angel's Death Song (As I love the whole Velvet Underground and Nico album), and it loses nothing in its power and evocativeness.

For those that like really Weird. just check out one of Dr. Demento's playlist for one of his nightly radio shows.
If it was weird he could find it.
As for the late 50's and early 60's a lot of songs had death in em. Leader Of the Pack. Tell Laura I love her. Last Kiss etc etc.
The later 60's had death in em, but more violent. There where other songs that had violence in em.  Like the Beatles Rocky Raccoon. Or Happiness Is a Warm Gun.  I myself loved the White Album. At one point during the recording sessions for the White Album, Starr walked out of the studio. Starr returned to the Beatles after two weeks, however, after being persuaded by the other three members. During that time, McCartney replaced him as the drummer on "Back in the USSR" and "Dear Prudence.". When he did return, he found his drumset decorated with flowers, a welcome back gesture from George.

Eric Clapton, at Harrison's invitation, provided an extra lead guitar for Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." George would later return the favor by collaborating on the song "Badge" for Cream's last album Goodbye.
Billy Preston had some influence on this album as well..

now for weird. White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane was pretty weird. Just about anything done by Ray Stevens had some weirdness to em.
I'm my own grandpa by him is a  pretty strange.

I'm My Own Grandpa may have been done by others, but it was actually written and performed in 1948.  Way before Ray Stevens and Homer and Jethro.  It was first performed by Lonzo and Oscar.

I would say that these are weird...

40,000 Headmen by Blood Sweat and Tears (Whoever heard of 40,000 men having to stop and reload their 20 shotguns each all at the same time?)

Beep Beep by The Playmates in 1958 (went to #4 on the Billboard charts)

I agree with In-a-gadda-davida as mentioned earlier.  I always thought Wooly Bully was weird.

WOOLY BULLY by Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs

Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro
Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw.
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw.
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance.
Let's not be*L-seven*, come and learn to dance."
Wooly bully, wooly bully
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.
Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do.
Get you someone really to pull the wool with you."
Wooly bully, wooly bully.
Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully.

*L-seven" = the letter "L" and the number "7". When typed, they
form a rough SQUARE (L7), so the lyrics mean "let's not be square."

If you hear a lot of Procol Harum and Moody Blues songs between 1967 and 1972 (Excluding "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Nights in White Satin" respectfu-Lee.) their lyrics to most of their songs are quite odd.

Roller Skates? Im thinking of two songs here. "You cant roller skate in a Buffalo Heard" by Roger Miller, or... "Brand New Key" by Melanie. "Ive got a brand new pair of roller skates, youve got a brand new key"...

Higher and Higher
Especially some of the  Moodies poetry ( I should say Grahmes)
Blasting, billowing, bursting forth
With the power of ten billion butterfly sneezes
Man with his flaming pyre
Has conquered the wayward breezes
Climbing to tranquility
Far above the cloud
Conceiving the heavens
Clear of misty shroud.

Okay How about Tuesday Afternoon

Tuesday afternoon,
I'm just beginning to see, now I'm on my way
It doesn't matter to me, chasing the clouds away.

Something, calls to me,
The trees are drawing me near, I've got to find out why?
Those gentle voices I hear, explain it all with a sigh.

They are still my favorite band and always will be...... :-*

The Shaggs: My Pal Foot Foot
The Residents: Hitler was a Vegetarian
Laurie Anderson: O Superman
Severed Heads: The Quest for Oom Papa
Frank Zappa: Lumpy Gravy I/II
Tom Glazer: On Top of Spaghetti
The B-52's: Quice Lourraine

I think it is the unrelenting single note beat that makes the whole thing disturbing yet, in it's own minimalist way, very effective. I have no idea how much the single is worth if value has anything to do with it.

nobody has mentioned Timothy by the Buoys? late 60s early 70s?

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy
Timothy...

I always thought "I statred a joke by The Bee Gees was a strange song, if anyone can expain it to me please do

I started a joke
Which started the whole world crying
But I didn't see
That the joke was on me, ohh no

I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

I looked at the skies
Running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed
Hurting my head from things that I'd said

Till I finally died
Which started the whole world living
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

I looked at the skies
Running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed
Hurting my head from things that I'd said

The song mainly written and sung by Robin Gibb. "I Started a Joke" is supposedly about someone who has done or said something horribly wrong, which results in social alienation. Another interpretation, related to the previous one, is that the song is sung from the point of view of the Devil.
