Subject: The Beatles or the Stones?

Written By: Robbo on 05/13/05 at 10:29 pm

Probably the 2 greatest rock bands of the 60's. Which one do you like better.

My vote goes to the Rolling Stones. I'm listening to "You Can't Always Get What You Want" right now.

Hm...the old 'Beatles' Vs 'Stones' poll #459...

A little bit pointless telling everyone my answer...they should know it by now!

They all prove the same point: Beatles are far superior than the Stones. (I like both btw)

This is really a popular topic, 3 threads going now ;D We need to add a twist to it, such as, who would win an arm wrestle between John & Charlie, or who could drink who under the table between Keith & Ringo :)

Well...just look at who the idiot is that started this one and you'll know he doesn't care about stirring up crap...it's the one, the only Jackson fan from "Screwball" Nation and he picks the Stones because his God Idol doesn't bother to talk to Paul anymore....oh well, he's gone and the Beatles continue to rule these polls :)

To me it is The Beatles, hands down.

They spent their entire career trying to expand their sound, and trying to find new things.  The Stones got into a rut, and for the last 40 years have been living off of their "Glory Days".

Musically, The Beatles realized early on that their music was no longer possible in a live venue, so stopped performing live.  There is just no way you can perform something like "Strawberry Fields Forever" or "Mr. Kite" live, and stay even close to the original.

To me, the Stones have become a sad caricature of themselves.  This is shown very well in a book by Harry Turtledove called Counting Up, Counting Down.  It deals with time travel, where a 40 year old man goes from 2018, back to 1999.  He tries to talk his younger self out of making a mistake.

When he tries to convince his younger self that he is telling the truth, his 21 year old self asks him "Please, don't tell me that the Stones are still touring!"

When Sci-Fi geeks like me think a group has overstayed their time, then that is saying something.

I like both but voted for the Stones. But the best two groups of the 60s? In terms of record sales possibly, but I prefer The Who, The Kinks, and The Small Faces to either of them.

The Stones have tried different sounds - don't forget their disco music of the late 70 and early 80s (I've tried to forget it but can't!). As for having overstayed their time, you only have to look at how much they charge for tickets and how many people are prepared to pay it - they've clearly not overstayed their time.

I'd love to see them on stage again, but I'm not prepared to pay the prices they charge these days.

I am a Beatles fan.  I love the Beatles and I like the Rolling Stones. If I were to put on an album of the Rolling Stones, I'd skip around to the songs I really dig. It's like I can't get no satisfaction. When I put on a Beatles album, I feel fine and I want to listen to every song because something in the way it sounds is so satisfying to me, yes it is.  8)

well, i said i like both.
but really i only llike specific songs by each group.

and i have to say i used to be a Beatles fanatic- but i got over it. I don't leave the songs on if they come on the radio, and I don't read about them anymore...I think once we lost my precious George it was all over for me.

The Stones- The songs I love by them I LOOVE.  So I might lean towards that group now.  (ugh..Miss You..great. Can't always get what you want...great.)

The Beatles win by default.

But you have to give the Stones the credit they deserve. I mean - 40 years on and still doing concerts (well, not currently, if you have been watching the news: mr. Richards has just been discharged from a hospital for injuries due to falling from a coconut tree or something) Both bands were pioneers in rock history for different reasons.

I personally prefer the Beach Boys to both these bands.

The Stones in the 70s were better than the Stones in the 60s.  I think the albums they put out after the Beatles broke up were some of their best.

I've tried to get into Pet Sounds and I just haven't received what the Beach Boys are putting out? Maybe one day I'll be listening to it and BAM  :o I'll have that moment of Beach Boys clarity.

Such words are ignorance, and spoken by one who doesn't understand anything about music. I'll quote someone else, 'if you don't GET Pet Sounds, you need an ear specialist.' Not liking Pet Sounds is like not liking Chocolate...it's plain weird.

Yadda,yadda,yadda....Cover Pet Sounds in chocolate, then it may be worth something, depending on the
grade of chocolate.

You all know what bores me? Airplay and too much of it. Therefore, since I personally have heard every Beatles song played to death in my 45 years of living, I have to prefer the Stones. PLUS, they did not try to write top ten hits. They wrote about some pretty controversial topics, took a chance, and dealt those cards out for the masses to critique; and were satisfied with where those cards as fell!(As example, "Mothers Little Helper", "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Brown Sugar", "Under My Thumb" (how chauvinistic is that that one?), ETC, ETC, ETC .
Stones have have (IMHO) alot of "filler" songs on their LP's, but are still one of the true standard setters of rock n roll.
(Except for Iggy Pop that is!)

wow, too defensive  :o  no need to attack personally, she just gave her opinion Trimac, you don't know everything about music do you?  ease up young man. now that i think about it, i threw a barrage of defensive spew at danoota for a led Zep thing. sorry about that danoota, I was being defensive of a band I like to hear just like Triamc20 here, but that ain't no reason to get all mean about it.  if someone says beach Boys = wimp rock, are you going to let that affect your opinion of them? no, of course not. You groove on them, and many many people do, but more like the Beatles. That doesn't mean more people are wrong, it just means you're part of a smaller fan base. I grew up listening to all 3 and enjoyed them all, but in my opinion Beatles blow them away in every category, musically, creativity, and personality. I love the stones and listened to about 30 stones songs today and it was great. I couldn't do that with the Beach Boys, nor would I because they're music is just a little too delicate for me. my opinion  8)

that is so true and I agree, but somehow I'm getting the feel this thread was a set up to let all the Beatle/Stones fans beat their drums and then you finish it off with the Beach Boys are better  ;D When the Beach Boys and all the other surfer style groups hit the scene, we all wanted to be like them, and have our group. Mine was gonna be the surf riders but I think it was already done.

But I have really heard it.  I grew up with the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin etc, etc,. I am old enough to have actually have seen the Beatles(1966 Suffolk Downs  :o )  So I am not giving uneducated
opinions.  I will admit, I can come on strong with some of those opinions, I am sure Badfinger will attest to
that, but that is because I truly love the music.  I will add that although I can be sarcastic at times I do understand that love of music is a personal thing, and that my opinion is just that, my opinion, not the gospel.
