Subject: The Billboard Top 9 40 Years Ago Today: September 10, 1965

Written By: DaBukaba on 09/10/05 at 4:40 am

The source of this information is my Billboard book. These were the Top 9 singles in the U.S. on this date 40 years ago -- September 10, 1965. (I was unable to find out the #10 song on this particular date. I used the availabe data in my book to put together this chart.) I also put the highest position in the U.S. the single reached, the date it reached its peak, and for how long the single was at its peak postition for.

September 10, 1965:

#1: "Help!" - The Beatles (Peak: #1; Peak reached: 9/4/65; Peak held: 3 weeks.)

#2: "Like a Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan (Peak: #2; Peak reached: 9/4/65; Peak held: 2 weeks.)

#3: "California Girls" - The Beach Boys (Peak: #3; Peak reached: 8/28/65; Peak held: 2 weeks.)

#4: "Unchained Melody" - The Righteous Brothers (Peak: #4; Peak reached: 8/28/65; Peak held: 2 weeks.)

#5: "It's the Same Old Song" - The Four Tops (Peak: #5; Peak reached: 8/28/65; Peak held: 2 weeks.)

#6: "I Got You Babe" - Sonny & Cher (Peak: #1; Peak reached: 8/14/65; Peak held: 3 weeks.)

#7: "You Were on My Mind" - We Five (Peak: #3; Peak reached: 9/25/65; Peak held: 1 week.)

#8: "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag Part I" - James Brown & the Famous Flames (Peak: #8; Peak reached: 9/4/65; Peak held: 2 weeks.)

#9: "Eve of Destruction" - Barry McGuire (Peak: #1; Peak reached: 9/25/65; Peak held: 1 week.)

A good day for good songs, I must say!

The number 10 song was Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me by Mel Carter.  In the Bob Dylan biography No Direction Home, there is a screen shot of the Billboard top ten when Like a Rolling Stone hit number 2 on the chart.
