Subject: What is THE anthem of the psychadelic age/counterculture?

Written By: Trimac20 on 04/10/06 at 12:56 am

I'm not going to do a poll, as I know opinions will diverge too broadly.

I can think of a few;

'Incense and Peppermint' - Strawberry Alarm Clock
'San Francisco' - Scott McKenzie
'Monday, Monday' - the Mammas and the Papas
That other 'San Francisco' song by the Flowerpot Men
'White Rabbit' - Jefferson Airplane
Several Grateful Dead/Quiksilver Messenger Service songs;
'Hello, Goodbye' - the Beatles
'Strange Brew' - Cream
'Alone Again Or' - Love
'Happy Together' - The Turtles
'Rainbows Over Your Blues' - John Sebastian
'For What It's Worth' - Buffalo Springfield
'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In' - Fifth Dimension
'Mr. Tambourine Man' - the Byrds (though it was a bit early)
'Soft Parade' - the Doors

How could I forget...Jimi Hendrix. Many of his songs could qualify. E.g. his rendition of 'Wild Thing' at Monterey, 'All Along the Watchtower' and of course, his 'not unorthodox' version of Stars and Stripes at Woodstock.

Some others:

Sunshine of your Love-Cream
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida-Iron Butterfly
Light my Fire-Doors
Woodstock-Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
Alice's Restaurant-Arlo Guthrie
I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag-Country Joe & the Fish

That's all I can think of right now.

There are some who will immediately list Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'...

Trouble is...it's not a 'psych' song and they weren't a 'psych' band...

But the song has such a connection with the Psychedelic Age that it's hard to define it as anything else...

They often say that 1967 was the true peak of the era, but I think 1969 saw a second 'psychadelic renaissance' with Woodstock before being killed off late that year. 68, for some reason, seems to lack the same...how should I put it, magic as 67 or 68. But it was musically rich because the Vietnam War protest movement reached its peak that year.

All of those work, although I would add Inna-Gada-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly and anything by Hendrix.

If '67 was the 'summer of love', then '68 was the immediate 'reality check'...

It was by all accounts a terribly depressing year events-wise, what with Vietnam rumbling onward, high profile assassinations, Russian tanks rolling into Prague and rioting in Paris (well, some things never change!)

Only one choice, IMHO: "1969" by The Stoges featuring a very young Iggy Pop.

That is definitely Australia's own psychadelic anthem.

And then there's also the British psychadelic scene - which is known as 'Psychadalia' (with an a instead of an e) to differentiate it from the American scene. Such bands as Pink Floyd, Kaleidoscope and Timebox were instrumental in that scene. Pink Floyd's 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' is possibly the best psychadelic album by a mainstream artist.

Wooden Ships - CSNY and Jefferson Airplane(I actually prefer the version by the Airplane)
Going Up The Country - Canned Heat
Ride My See-Saw - Moody Blues

After hearing the Turtles ' Happy Together' again I'd probably remove it from that list. Probably a bit too mainstream pop.

Riders' came well after the psychadelic boom in the late 60s...in 1971 in fact.

I would think "Time Of The Season" by the Zombies. As well as a few of those already mentioned, like the "Fixin' To Die Rag".

As an event Monterey Pop (full name Monterey International Musical Festival) was a more defining statement of the flower power generation than Woodstock. For one it was a free concert - not like Woodstock, which was started by a couple of business entrepenuers with the express motive of making money. Secondly, it was held in Northern California; still the heartland of the hippie culture all these years later.

I think this was the begining of the psychadelic age with George Harrison's "Within you Without you" and the introduction of the music from India by Ravi Shankar and twangy sounds of his his Sitar and the Sarod, the beats of the Tabla and the Tamboura intensified your Pot High or LSD Trip.

It started in 1967 when Pot and Acid use became the Vogue and the In Thing to do. Transcendental Meditaion with Indian Guru's and Indian Music, Peter Max Art with Black Lights glowing on them changing your head rush dreams into areas of your mind that you never knew exsisted before. All of these little things came together in 67' after Sgt. Pepper album. Jimi Hendrix was quick to pick up on the movement and was made an Icon by all the Pot Heads for it. Deep Purple an the Strawbery Alarm Clock and then Gracie Slick and then the Stones had their cuts at it too. It was all related to the Music the Art even Twiggy brought psychcadelic Fashions to the Countrerculture in 1967 they all had their part creating the Psychadelic Anthem of the Drug Culture. All the others mentioned where part of it too, but maybe later on after it was mainstream cool.

Hi Trimac20, I got married in May 69' only a couple months before Woodstock, so you know I was doomed right from the start on not going to a weekend Rock concert with "free love and drugs"...need I say more, only that I did the right thing and I'm still married going on 37 years and not a divorsee after 3 months of marriage.

Although I didn't go, I remember the night that when all of the gang left to go. I ran a small  clothing store/head shop boutique in town and it was more of a hang out or meeting place for all the hippy kids in the area, a safe place for them to do their things. Just before closing the store around 9 PM groups of kids I knew and didn't know started to pile into the store, 3 kids, then 5 more then another 7 then car loads of kids from out of town hanging outside the store all becoming instantaneous friends waiting for other kids in who told them to all meet at the store, within a half hour there was about 30 guys and girls dressed in their Hippy garb, back packs and sleeping bags who most where strangers at first and soul mates minutes later, all types of kids, now all the same, all with the same "Head" all had the same karma and practiced the Love and Peace that the Woodstock concert communicated...it was a good feeling to see it all come together. Everything was beautiful even when 3 of the Pagans motorcycle gang from South Jersey pulled up and said they where meeting a group to bike up to New York with. All this happening fast, and within a hour they they all left in a caravan of cars vans trucks and bikes and I went home to wifey. In a way I had my "Love In" in that short time at the store, it was a real nice thing to see happen for me since I didn't go to Woodstock myself.

They all had their stories when they got back...those are for another time.

I've seen the 'Woodstock documentary', and from what I see it wasn't all good times; there were problems with shortages of facilities, lack of food.etc, bands pulling out. But what struck me was the sheer scale of the thing; nearly 500,000...a small city crammed into a few hectares. Ah well, that's the closest I can get to Woodstock 69'.
